Should have made this from EndLighten T, which is a special acrylic glass from Evonik that is meant for light scattering when edge lit. In shops it also goes by the name of Plexiglas LED.
@MrXephone4 жыл бұрын
Light scattering for plexi is also named Back Light. It consist in "damage/scratch" the surface in a non-homogeneous way to counter the light exiting the panel with the distance. In such a tiny surface (aka 60mm here) is not needed. But for bigger panel/surface, it provide a nice and homogeneous light density all over the surface.
@pm17414 жыл бұрын
Not worth the extra cost. Enlighten T is a ripoff.
@russelllopez41714 жыл бұрын
IMO, the darkness that is on the edges gives it a 3D look and makes the columns look round.

Please beware one thing about laser cutting acrylic plastic: the cutting process is thermal & leaves built-in stress in the parts. Later, these stresses may cause the parts to crack, especially around holes. The solution is to bake the parts after cutting out, slowly heating them to just under the softening point (where the stresses relieve), then slowly cooling the parts back to room temperature.
@Dr_Xyzt2 жыл бұрын
You're overthinking it. I don't have access to a laser cutter. All I have is a table saw. If I were to make this assembly, I'd consider sending the parts out to be cut on a WaterJet. It'll leave a matte finish on the edges which can be painted to change the performance characteristics. Another option is to use a disc sander to trim the edge of the cut. Another great option is to send the job to a machine shop. A carefully planned cut sequence will leave interesting tool marks in the edges of the cut.
@Dr_Xyzt2 жыл бұрын
@@bpark10001 That was a pretty sweet pdf link! Thank you. -- I apologize for my earlier comment. I see what the deal is here. When we cut the material, each cut leaves a tiny stress riser, even if I use a nice sharp flycutter with a wiper insert. If I take the part and bend it, then it should fracture right at one of the tool marks. -- I do want to try my disc sander idea. A bit of soapy water is all it requires. -- As for machine shop work, I wanna try an experiment with a small piece. Drill two holes with a 2-flute endmill. Climb cut the other side with a downcut endmill. Flycut another side. Oven cure one piece, leave the other one as-cut.
@bpark100012 жыл бұрын
@@Dr_Xyzt OK. What happens is that the plastic melts in the cut's surfaces, the same as if it were laser cut or "flame polished". The melted plastic cools & shrinks, but is prevented from doing so by the surrounding non-heat-affected plastic. The surface is in tension, where defects are present to start cracks. The worst cuts are the ones that leave sharp "inside" corners, from which cracks grow. Modify geometry to avoid these (for example, for clock gears, put a radius in the tooth roots & on top of the teeth). Keep tool speeds LOW & keep tools SHARP. You can laser cut. The trick is to heat the whole sheet to annealing temperature BEFORE the cut. (You will need to scale up the part to account for expansion). You can see the stress by getting polarizers (cheap pair of polarized sunglasses, remove the lenses, set crossed so is dark to transmitted light, put the acrylic between). If stress, you will see dazzling colors). After anneal, this color will disappear & will remain dark.
