In Germany it's getting more difficult to make money from the micros. There are some restrictions coming: no free table selection, no free sit selection, max. 4 tables at the same time - no matter whether one site or multiple sites. It limits the possibility to make real money in the long run. :(

Here’s how I memorized the hands & how I teach it to others. It’s a pneumonic device that lists every hand from worst to best. Memorize this phrase: “1 2 3 straight flush 2 3 4 straight flush” Translation, word by word: “1” = one pair “2” = two pair “3” = three of a kind “straight” “flush” “2 3” = full house (2 cards plus 3 cards) “4” = four of a kind “straight flush” (one word this time) Say it out loud: “1 2 3 straight flush 2 3 4 straight flush” (The “2 3” part is by far the most confusing, but it’s not too much to figure out.) Hope this helps.

Great to see the face behind the emails. Have been playing a little bit of low stakes poker for a few years, made a little bit of money. I have retired now so have started play a lot more. Have been receiving your emails for a few months now. Three things I have learnt from you that has really improved my game are 1 play good hands aggressively, trying to be clever doesn't get the money in the pot. 2 Don't bluff to often, the fish is always going to call you. 3 If your having a bad day, bad beat after bad beat don't tilt trying to chase your losses, just walk away, there's always another day. Keep sending the tips. Looks like I will be buying a poker tracker.

Another tip I have learned as a beginner who is only now just starting to make some consistent winnings.. decline the all or nothing toss ups. You have a strong hand but the opponent has gone all in. You do not have the nuts. Your whole stack has the potential to double or disappear in a single moment. Maybe you're getting a little tired and would actually rather be doing something else. Being tired may tempt you to risk your whole stack. Decline those situations and fold. The hurt of getting wiped out is worse than the good of doubling your stack. Way worse. When you get tired step away from it on your own terms. Avoid discouragements like losing those stupid tossups. If poker were a game of 50/50 or 45/55 tossups there would be no reason to skill up. Playing according to skill will win you much more than coin flipping your stack. You should rarely if ever risk more than 20 big blinds in a hand. BELIEVE YOUR OPPONENT. Chances are very high (85%?) they're NOT bluffing. The reason it is so hard to fold in such circumstances is you will never know if you made the winning decision on that particular hand BUT you will be able to know you made the right decision overall. Being in control of your own game is half the battle. As a new player, losing those all-in plays will hurt badly and possibly risk you quitting altogether. Learn to walk away from the all or nothing toss-ups and you will become a better more successful player. ..
@FefeLeVrai3 жыл бұрын
You're right to assume they're not bluffing when they go all-in, but keep in mind they can always be overplaying weaker hands. The textbook example is small top pairs, eg 77 on a 335 board, or KT on a T32 board. They can definitely raise you all-in on the flop with this kind of hand. Don't fold your aces like a nit in these spots thinking they flopped a monster.
@MrDavePed3 жыл бұрын
@@FefeLeVrai In my experience it isn't worth the risk. Top pair is not sufficient. You need something close to the nuts. Any two pair or trips will beat a top pair with no indication on the board. You can spot potential straights and flushes and full houses by looking at the board but you can't see any indication the opponent made trips holding a low pair or that they made an accidental two pair. I would not go all in on a pair of aces on the flop. Just not strong enough. I've been beat too many times by junky two pairs or trips. Yes they may be overplaying a pair of kings which would certainly lose to your pocket aces but.. at the 5/10 stakes players are a little more seasoned. They don't get all excited about holding top pair. ..
@BlackRain79Poker3 жыл бұрын
This is a really good point Word of Mouth. I also agree that beginners should try to avoid high variance 50/50 all-in "flips" as much as possible. One of the biggest reasons why is because it is easy to lose several of these in a row and this puts many poker beginners on tilt. You can't avoid taking the AK vs JJ all-in preflop flips in tournaments sometimes, especially in the later stages, but you can certainly avoid these in cash games where the blinds never increase.

@Nicholas Wakeham I don't use a HUD and I don't play according to positions. Still making money most of the time. As for positions an early position increases the credibility of your bet offsetting the disadvantage. Late position bets are not as credible. Betting first (from early position) is a great way to convince everybody to fold. HUDS? I've tried them I don't like all the clutter. I managed to fire up the bet online tracker and it is useful for tracking my net profits and my vpip af and other stats but I only play the boost and things are going well. New players haven't settled into a pattern anyway now have they? No. I know a lot more about what my opponent is holding by how much they pause before betting. Nanoseconds make the difference in the pause of a bet. Most people try to "hollywood" but rarely do they do it with any regularity. The nature of the pause will tell you much if you let it speak to you. Just bear in mind they might be playing multiple tables. My vpip is currently set at 23.68%. I made a little spreadsheet to calculate what my vpip percentage is according to my range. Nope I don't use a HUD I think it would be good for non boost tables at higher levels where the players have settled into their patterns. I don't hunt the fish either I play the hand not the player and at the 5/10 boost table it is working for me. Still working on my curiosity flaw as I occasionally pay ridiculous amounts to see the cards even when I expect to lose. Gotta stop doing that to achieve an even more consistent winning profile. Thanks. ..

One thing I’d recommend which I’ve noticed after coming back to the game after a few years (I used to lose a lot in cash games and go min buy in), I’d make sure you’re sitting down with a stack you’re comfortable losing in a worse come worse situation. If you’re not afraid of losing, it will help your image and make your aggressive plays more convincing and buying in for the max gives you a lot of wiggle room I found. I wish I knew that all those years ago.

The mental side of poker is what intrigued me about the game, it sure wasnt the math, ive been playing almost 2 years and im very confident, Phil ivey is incredible of course but my goodness ! Does he have to be lucky too! The biggest issue for me is when to fold, i flopped trips earlier today and had the guy calling off, then a 6 comes on the river for a well hidden straight, the guy shoved, but he did it before with a missed flush, i called and lost. I think thats a special talent in poker, folding a great hand, but then again no one wants to get bluffed, i love this crazy game.

You'll lose more money holding pocket kings than any other hand. It is too tempting to hold onto them and ignore that ace on the table staring back at you. What are the odds? Cowboys attract bullets like nothing else ! Kings seem to attract all sorts of unlikely bad beats on the river. Better to play them hard and win before showdown or just muck them as soon as they lose their luster. Remember, the better the card the more often your opponent will bring it to the flop. The most often held card on the flop is the ace. That is why being the first to bet on a 2-9 low cards kind of flop is a good move if you are holding nothing or the low pair. ..

You can't bluff fish off a pair, but you can definitely bluff them off high cards. I've played a lot of hands at the micros where I bet flop and turn as a bluff, then bet 1/5 pot on the river, and they folded. Since they call with way too many draws (all the gutshots, or even 2 overcards), they end up on the river with a lot of missed draws, and even the smallest bet can get all this to fold.

When holding nothing on the flop with normal betting pre-flop.. If nobody has bet on a paired flop (a pair on the board) BET !! I use the 2 1/2 bb bet. They almost always fold. The odds of them having a match or a strong draw with that kind of flop is very low and the odds of you, as the initial better having matched is too high to warrant a call. Especially if the unpaired card is not consolidated either numerically or by suit. In my experience on the 5/10 game if you are the first to bet when a pair is flopped on the board you will gain the pot 39 times out of 40. It is a matter of being the first to bet on what the others don't have. Similar goes for aces on the flop. Huge scare card, always be the first to claim your ace has paired up with the board if it is an unconsolidated flop with an ace. If you are called and hold nothing don't push it just let them take the initiative on the turn. If they are first to play and do not claim the initiative they are likely on a draw and draws usually fail so bet ! Not much though because they might be slow playing you. If they call you again don't bet on the river unless you are holding something. You will be in that position so infrequently the whole approach will soon be plainly justified to you as an overall winning tactic. This also holds true for an unconsolidated low card flop. People usually muck low cards preflop so the odds of them having improved with an unconsolidated low card flop are quite low. So in summary When holding nothing on the flop, with normal betting pre-flop and.. the flop contains a pair or an ace or all low cards .. and one more kind.. the all of the same suit kind of flop, and no one has yet bet, YOU bet ! Early position is even more convincing. You are simply betting their pocket cards did not improve. They are VERY likely to fold when facing a 2 1/2 bb bet. Personally, I always bet in this circumstance even when the pairs, aces, low cards or single suited ARE consolidated, even when I'm in early position. The lack of consolidation just increases the chance the opponent will not have a draw. Just be aware that if you get called it might also be due to a draw or low to middling pocket pairs. ..
@bgymn-fn8jy3 жыл бұрын
youre not more likely to hit that flop youre just telling them you hit it by betting and theyre very likely to get scared out of the pot.. :)
@MrDavePed3 жыл бұрын
@@bgymn-fn8jy I may be "telling them I hit it" which of course I'm not because players generally don't say anything at the table.. or.. I may just be betting that they didn't hit it. I may simply be betting that they are not willing to pay the price to proceed. When there's a pair on the flop the likelihood that anyone hit it is much lower than otherwise. The odds of a massive fold are even better if it is an under ten unconsolidated rainbow. Poker players don't lie they just bet. Many players think they are being deceptive but in actuality they are just betting the odds. Slow playing a hand? Think that's deceptive? Not really. it is merely odds and tactics according to odds. ..

Nathan you say to play selectively and aggressively, so we can win the pot two ways , sometimes when we actually have nothing, and sometimes not only just a Cbet, but through the turn and river as well. But then a later tip was not to bluff too much. Can you maybe explain to us what some of the guidelines may be, to help us do the appropriate and necessary bluffs, but not indeed bluff unnecessarily or TOO much I realize there can be myriad of considerations, and some thinking above level 1 or 2.
@BlackRain79Poker3 жыл бұрын
Hey Bruce, sure I can explain this a little bit more. I didn't want to cover it too in depth in this video because it is a "beginner" video after all. The time when I suggest to continue betting as a bluff on the turn or river are typically when you are A) against a weak tight fearful player (i.e. NOT a fish) and B) it comes with some nice scare cards like an Ace or a King.
@jimpalmer43923 жыл бұрын
how do you not bluff to much when you c bet often with no pair?
@FefeLeVrai3 жыл бұрын
Betting with no pair is not always a bluff. A lot of the time, it's a protection bet. If you cbet 1/3 pot with AK on a dry board like 882, it's because you have the best hand the vast majority of the time, but don't want to let them see a free turn to hit a pair.
@BlackRain79Poker3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, this is a good question and I agree it is difficult to avoid bluffing when typically you will have nothing around 2 out of 3 times on the flop. I do still recommend making a continuation bet most of the time on the flop though, for the simple reason that A) most players (even fish) do fold a reasonable amount of the time and B) we can often just bet a small amount like 50% of the pot, which means we don't need folds all that often for it to be profitable. As for the turn and river, I would suggest a different strategy of mostly laying off the gas pedal at the lower stakes, versus recreational players in particular, when you have nothing.
@BlackRain79Poker3 жыл бұрын
This is a good point also Fefe. Just because you have "nothing" on a flop of 772 with your AJ, doesn't necessarily mean you are bluffing. Often your AJ is actually the best hand here at the lower stakes versus the rec players in particular, because they call with so many nonsense hands preflop. Therefore, your cbet with AJ on the 772 flop is actually a value bet and not a bluff.

I got a great tip for beginners... - don’t play online, play live, you’ll lose all your money online and end up giving up on it. Yes some people are successful online, but to many bots and scams. Do your research on what site you use also.

wasn't it contradictory to say play aggressive to bluff, then say don't bluff too much? Just trying to understand.
@BlackRain79Poker3 жыл бұрын
Hey Stephen, ya it depends on the player type so much. Versus the large majority of players at the micros, I suggest not bluffing very much. Versus that small subset of players who are tight and play scared, I recommend bluffing. I hope that makes sense.

Nothing drills home the point of "DON'T PLAY HIGH STAKES" like posting a menacing photo of Phil Ivey 😂

#3 is almost blasphemy to a lot of dudes online. Like okay everyone, enjoy spending 30 hours a week studying solved output so that you can beat 50 blitz on ACR for 1-2 bb/100 against a bunch of 20/17’s

thats the things, its almost not worth it now. not enoguh bad players with the wealth of knowledge online.

Majed Twijiri that’s the case online. Live poker, though, totally different story. Check Mariano’s vlog from today for example, guys are still limping preflop at 10/20 NL. Sites able to operate in the USA that haven’t been overrun by Eastern Europeans can have good action, too

you say to game select and find weaker players, you know you can get banned for this bum hunting tactic on GG poker, just making you or any one aware of this in there TOS. keep up the good content

30 buy ins is a lot for cash games. I assume this isn't your life roll. If you go on a downswing that consumes less than half of 30 buy ins then we're way beyond normal variance. Poker may simply not be for you. I've played for 18 years as a serious amateur and while I feel as though I must have at least once gone on a downswing as severe as three buy ins...for the life of me I actually cannot recall when it's ever gotten even that bad.

100 buyins in MTT low stakes is suicidal. You need at least 300 in big field tours to not go brok 50% of the time. I'm sorry, but 100 buyins was in 2010.

Great stuff Nathan 👍👍 Question: are you into fasting or keto? ;)
@BlackRain79Poker3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Patrick! The answer to that is yes to both. I have done intermittent fasting for years (in the morning) and I eat a semi-Keto diet. Maybe I will do some fitness/diet videos in the future. Might lose all my subscribers though haha?

I mostly like your videos, but telling EVEN BEGINNERS to be selective in the hands they play? If they don't know that, they shouldn't be playing AT ALL...
