Awesome stuff Jeromy, that’s a great check, those coyotes know when the cows start calving, afterbirth and still borns are easy meals for them, they’ll grab a new born calf if they get the chance too, thanks for taking us along for the ride 👍👍

@Jeromy Cooley- Out West Adventures those types of places are great even in late December and January because the ranchers have to feed high protein feed. The yotes pick the manure quite a bit. The numbers aren't as high, but the fur is better. Also, the heifers start leaking fluid some.

Which Duke 2 do you use? Also what pan tension do you use
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Жыл бұрын
I use the Duke #2 square jaw offset. I use really light pan tension. I take the trap out of the box, and loosen the screw until the pan falls with gravity. Maybe one out of every 100 coyotes I catch end up toe caught. I usually have a a bobcat or two per season toe caught, but never sprung traps without anything in them. Zero pan tension is the opposite of what most experts say, but the proof speaks for itself. Great question

Good stuff ! Snares are the best tool for that job for sure ! Do you find that they ignore baited sets when the cows are calving ?
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Жыл бұрын
I definitely do. I think with them breeding and cows calving they run right past any sets unless it’s a urine, or gland smell.

Man your coyote population is thicker than our mouse population.
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Жыл бұрын
This area is very unique. The trapper before me would get around 100 coyotes on this ranch every season. It is about 40,000 acres. It hasn’t been trapped for two seasons so I expected it to be thick with coyotes, but not this thick. The rest of the area I trap is about average coyote population. Some ranches I’ve trapped this year, I only have caught 5 coyotes. Other ranches I’ve caught 35. Keep in mind these Ranches are 10,000-50,000 acre each. Thanks for the comment.

@@caroltenge5147 you didn’t even listen to the video. Those Wild Coyotes are going after Cows that are giving birth. People complain about the price of beef as it is. Just imagine how much it would go up to if those animals Where left unchecked. We wouldn’t have a Deer, Pronghorn, Rabbit population and they would go after your pets. For the most part people don’t understand, trapping, hunting is population control and conservation. Anyways thanks for watching snd commenting on Jeromys video you help the algorithm

Question do you get a lot of coyotes with the water head, seem like you have as many alive in your snares as dead,anther question is why do you use mico locks instead of vam locs?
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Жыл бұрын
Great questions. I do get a lot of coyotes with the melon head. It’s not too much fun when I’m skinning, but I guess it part of the job. As far as locks, there is a lot of great locks out there. I use the micro locks because it has a very small profile, and i haven’t had any substantial fur damage due to the lock. I make my own snares, and it it very quick, cheap, and easy. It’s totally personal preference. I don’t think they work any better, or worse than a cam lock. As far as having coyotes dead or alive, and cam lock vs micro locks, it definitely has to do with how I’m rigging my snares. Most all of my sets are made using entanglement. I realize that’s not legal in alot of states, but it is here in Oregon. I rely on the coyote wrapping around something enough to snug down the snare. If I used a short cable, with a solid anchor point, that the coyote could pull and draw the snare down tight I would have alot less live coyotes. When I used just a short cable, with a solid anchor I would have a 75% chew out rate. It only took me about a week to change my tactics back to long cables with entanglement. This is a great topic, and everyone has a strong opinion. I say to each there own. Find a system that works for you, and trust it.
@kennethbriody8396
@kennethbriody8396 Жыл бұрын
Your right it's what you prefer, I myself like cam locs better I also do the entanglement method here in nm. I use 50lb kill springs on about 1/2 of them had good success with kill spring on mico loc as well,dont get to many melon headed coyotes.I ought to send you a pic caught one by a hond leg ,in a fence line of a dairy / feed lot the cows in that pasture had him treed on top of the fence, have you ever trapped around a dairy, the one I trapped lot an lot of coyotes but damm they were so fat it was like flashing a damm beaver and were just plain nasty

Why do you cut the snare rather than just loosen it and reset it right where it is?
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790
@jeromycooley-outwestadvent5790 Жыл бұрын
Great question. The snares are ruined after each catch. I build all my own, and the time spent trying to straighten out the bent snare is counterproductive. It is very possible to do, but I just swap them out real quick, and I’m out about $.030 for the ruined cable. I reuse the trap tags, and locks. Thanks for the question!
