That is how I see coaching as well, the athlete must know what he is doing. great and simple drills, gets you right to essential issues for edge pressure, rotation, body control and turn transition. Of course, older folks won't be able to really do some of these drills but things like the superman drill, poles in front, etc, are really useful

I agree. I never went to ski school or ski club and after training these exercises, I can ski slalom courses already. I still skid a little too much at the rear of the skis and lose speed compared to real racers, though.

I often use the Robo Cop drill as you named to to help keep skiers hips forward through the turn as well as keeping the upper body forward with level shoulders... it works great for many of the skiers who are in the backseat

That’s fascinating. When I coached young entry level racers, I figured out that using exaggerated, counter-rotated tuck turns could get kids having trouble learning to carve a ski up to speed instantly. I have never seen anyone else use tuck turns as a drill. What I figured out is that doing tuck turns forces the skier to let the ski make the turn instead of using excessive up and down movements to force a turn. And exaggerating the counter-rotation helps set good habits in general and makes it obvious how bad over-rotation can be. Although I do try to emphasize that tuck turns for skiing SG and DH are slightly different and use more inclination than drill tuck turns. It’s a very effective drill to get kids struggling at an intermediate level up to a more advanced level quickly.

Wow, thanks you for such great feedback. Thanks for bringing this topic up. I have a new video in the making where I try to bring the tuck drill to everyone's attention. I was training a new group of Masters skiers this winter at an other resort than my usual and this one guy was over rotating into the turn. So I put him in a tuck and we did this drill. Now he is ripping. Gonna try to re-shoot some of the drill after eastern when this season training and racing is over and done with. Cheers, T

I must admit nothing changed for more than 30 years. Just a couple of new ones. The one I don't see here is laying down on your back and standing up while skiing. It's both physical and balance training. Very useful recovery drill.

I agree that everybody should train to put their back to the ground while skis go directly forward and then pull themselves back up without stopping or changing direction. The trick is to pull your butt to the shoes before trying to raise yourself from the ground. I originally tried to do it just with the abs and it felt totally impossible. Of course, the stronger your abs are, the easier the move is.

LOVE these drills. I like that (except for robocop) the reason for the drill is posted. At a ski resort, it's hard to do the single- and no-pole exercises because you need to leave them somewhere. Guess I need to trust my fellow skiers more, but I did have my poles stolen once.

One thing I notice is that committing to the turns like here or like in a slalom competition - or in general in perfect snow conditions - is somehow different from skiing on a commercially available and heavily frequented slope. On the latter one might encounter patches of really dense hardpack or even solid ice - and then unless someone is sharpening the edges twice a day or so - then committing to a turn łike here but on a patch of hard solid ice is an almost guaranteed fall to the inside. OK the edges might be still holding well early in the day but towards the end of the day there will be more ice and while edges might be already a bit dulled. That sometimes tends to ruin my practice plans, as I do not have access (yet) to dedicated trainings on a well prepared slope. I hope to join some club for the next season and it might then change, hopefully 🙂 Great video, I keep it for future views, cheers !

Thanks for watching and such great feedback. Yes, we tune our ski edges after each training session. We also carry multiple skis with us and never do course inspection or maintenance with the pairs meant for racing. In SL we also have different skis for racing and training. In the indoor skiing arenas you need to tune the edges every third run or so. We also always save the inside racing edges for racing. On the Atomics you can see that on the claws at the tip. Hopefully you will get into racing. Yes, join a club. Its by far the best way to improve your skiing and also keep you going. Set for life :)

Triggerboy62 Yes Is horrible because in this moment we have in Valle Nevado , El Colorado, La Parva, Farellones , fantastic quantities of Snow but is not allowed Ski for social distance and because we can’t go anywhere without a paper just to go twice a week for supermarket or Clinic and the situation is sad . l had a flat in Colorado is a 45 minutes door to door but l can’t go . 4 months in quarantine when arrives delivered we must use mask 😷 all peoples is a little paranoia in supermarket with social distance ! waiting this wednesday President maybe give us a better news! bye 👋🏼 have fun ! in this summer for you!

The drills cover fundamental skills for all mountain intermediate through expert skiers that want to develop their skills or as tune up/refresher drills. Meakla Shiffrin does lots of these and other drills. She does them perfectly and a treat to watch. Take her word for in the videos she did for Burke Mountain. The base skills for all mountain skiing are also the same skills for racers at every level as they are that fundamental to all skiing. The most fundamental thing in skiing is balance. These drills are all targeted ultimately to balance.

Thanks for watching the video and your nice words. Coaching is important. Huge improvements can be achieved. However, mostly it is the skier that matters the most. It is the racer that makes the coach and not the other way around. You need to build a good athlete/coach relationship where the racer trusts the coach and the coach has patience with the racer. Hello sir, this was amazing truly. I am now 21 yrs old and I used to do some ski racing very brief period as a kid before I decided to stop and move on to park skiing and focus on other sports. I ski a lot and have been doing lots of ski touring in last years but I want to take my on-piste high performance carving to the next level. Do you think it is too late for me to take my carving to a level somewhat close as the young man in the video? I do feel that my carving is at quite a high level compared to most folks but not as clean as a racer, what could you reccomend as next steps for me? Thank you in advance. Your videos are like gold.

Thanks for watching. The skier in the video, Chris, is quite talented so hard to say if you could ski like him but it certainly is not impossible. He is very disciplined and very athletic. That is something anyone can do for starters. But it's not a question of how well you can ski. You do it at your own level and have fun. Especially since you do not race. Nobody will judge you. excellent video. I am an intermediate skier and I am having difficulty in understanding where should my weight be during the carving turn. I mean in the foot area. i am getting quickly tired and I think this is one of my problems. I have seen some videos that is putting a lot of emphasis on flexing forward and using the big toe area of the new outside ski and tipping on the little toe are of the new inside ski. I could not find any videos explaining the weight distribution during the whole carve turn and how to use the foot. i am not a racer. Should I always flex and lean forward during the turn?

RoboCop is for hip and shoulder awareness. We have a lesser proprioceptive network around these joints compared to the feet, so they give us a visual cue of where in the turn we struggle maintaining level hips/shoulders.

Thanks. Not sure what you are referring to thou. I have never really liked the Super Man drill, especially for kids and they are so flexible and agile that they overdo it and create all sorts of bad tendencies like: a-frame, excessive counter, limited inclination, park and ride, low edge angles, contradictive movement to blocking SL gates etc etc. That is where the 007 drill comes in. I have not invented it myself but given it the names I am using: 007 or Reversed Super Man Drill. As it is just that. Instead of reaching "outwards" with your inside arm, reach "forwards" across the hill with your outside arm. I first got acquainted with it by a video with Tina Mazes coach. The Super Man drill is a SL drill, the Reversed Super Man drill is a GS drill. You want your momentum to be projected forwards instead of down the hill as in SL. This also explains why you extend more often through the transition in GS like Odermatt. Flexing is absorbing some of that rebound and momentum. Extending is like driving a F1 car with no shock absorbers. Hopefully this answers at least some of your questions. Cheers, T

i am just able to ski on one ski on my right ski...too much ski in one sentence. Has this sth. to to with my "stronger" leg or do i have tecnical deficits. So When i have the ski as my lower ski in the turn, no problem but turning on my left ski into a left turn. There i've got some difficulties.

Superman and variations-should we create a hip dump and counterrotation of the hips at the turn initiation? Do you consider that a proper race technique? Or even an adequate skiing technique? Sorry, but I strongly disagree. Chris is noticeably misaligned with his hips when doing this drill. There are many other questionable statements and drills, but this just surprised me. Maybe I don't understand, I apologise for my negative feedback. It just doesn't look right to me.

Feedback much appreciated. We have had many comments in the commentary section of videos, even from wc-racers, and it is important to let everyone have a say. Many times the regular guy out on the mountain can come up with the most valuable information. Regarding the superman drill.... Im not very fond of this drill but I am fond of the reversed superman drill. Also the variation where you pass a ski pole from outside hand to new outside hand at transition. Drills are usually not aimed at having you ski a certain way, its more a way of trying to enhance good movements or in most cases rid bad habits. If a skier fails to angulate at the hip and counter, bring the hips into the turn, then the superman drill helps with that. But we do not want a hip dump, therefore we need to build other movements into the skiers movement pattern. The reverse superman drill I learned from Tina Mazes coach. Basically the superman drill is a SL type drill while the reversed super man drill is a GS drill. Note that this video is several years old. When reffering to ankle flexion in skiing, does this mean completely flexing ankle by pushing shin forward and lifting top of foot to top of the boot? Or is it flexing the ankle to put as much shin pressure into boot? Thank you

Excellent question. This is the exact same reason I don't like to use the word ankle flexion. I rarely use it. I think it means the former. You are forcing the flex. In my own understanding, flexing would be more in the lines of relaxing. Relaxing your ankle joint putting more pressure on the shins. A bit confusing if you ask me. Why do you ask? Did you see it mentioned in the video?

@@BallaKING247 Hi, super good question. Thanks for bringing me to the attention of "flexing". I usually never talk about "flexing the ankles" but I do talk extensively about "flexing through transition" so I use the word "flexing" more than I realized at first in this discussion. And yes, they are coupled now that I think about it. I just never really gave it much thought and attention. "Flexing your ankles", also known as "dorsiflexion", is a muscle effort where you lift your toes upwards using the Tibialis Anterior muscle. In skiing that translates into lifting your toes upwards inside your boot forcing your lower leg shin to squash against the tongue of your boot. Commonly referred to as "shin pressure". You can also apply "shin pressure" by leaning forwards with your whole body pushing your hips forward but usually the muscle effort to dorsiflex your ankle keeps "shin pressure" more consistent for a more "solid" forward position. However, "flexing your ankle" really comes into play as you "flex through the transition" in a high performance carved turn progression at highest skill level as two things happen: your hips move back due to mechanics as flexing your knees 90 deg. forces your hips back in relation to your feet and your Center Of Mass can not be used to apply shin pressure, actually the opposite, AND your are floating through the transition, sometimes flying, and you have no ground contact between skis and snow. So in order to keep "shin contact" in a flexed retraction turn you need to "flex at the ankles" as well. Also, I mentioned the word "retraction". Note that a "retraction transition" is not squatting down, it is "retracting" your legs up. Think of it as jumping on a trampoline. As you fly up in the air, retract your knees up against your chest. When you do this a couple of times in a row you feel your stomach and core getting a good workout. Not by coincidence is that the type of muscles and muscle groups top alpine skiers train. Actually, I think I have a script for a new video right here hahahaa. Anyway, hopefully I gave you fuel for thought. And I have not seen many talk about this concept the way I do except for the Italians. As for drills, please let me get back to you on this issue. However, when in your boots and with skis on out on snow, squatting down and dropping your hips back and then pulling yourself up while dorsiflexing your ankle joint through out the progression is a good drill for training ankle flex.

Thank you for watching and for asking a question. Carving is really an advanced ski technique and therefore are all these drills not really suitable for beginners. But as soon as you can ski a bit you can practice carving with my video Learn How To Carve And incorporate some of these drills such as the superman drill. Have fun and shoot questions at me. hey, i'm a guy who only skied for 5 days my whole life a few weeks ago. I went from pizza to kinda doing parallel turns learning throught youtube. I say kinda parallel turns because my crew forced me to go to red areas where i had to break for my dear life. So i couldnt really focus on my technique. I also used used race carve skis i believe, which is why i really struggled with not falling the whole time. I plan to keep the skis and focus on skiing like pros, so to be able to have good control, and also to be able to carve. I have a huge fear of going fast because im way too scared of falling, it happened too many times. First day i went fast, i looked back, and i fell on my head, having shock symptoms and a blue eye . Ever since i am too scared of going fast. Any solutions for this? (in reality id love to be fast and safe) Also, any tips on how to start learning to carve? I can barely do parallel turns right now. I dont live far from a ski place (very small but good for learning) and i plan to go there at least once a week to improve a lot for my next season in the alps. So if you have tips or videos for me that i can watch which will help me ski well then i would appreciate it a lot! I also have a lot of video of footage of my skiing so if you want to look at it i can make a video and upload it (ofc ill keep it short like 3 mins, with pure scenes where u can rate my skiing). @@Triggerboy62 Thanks for your answer! i didnt get a notification so i just saw it now. I already went to a blue slope and spent 8 hours training there. At the end of the day i managed to learn to carve a little bit. And i have ur habit too, i go as "fast" as a turtle on the new slopes but after repeating the slope i went full speed practicing my carve turns and it felt amazing. Now i want to improve and make the correct movements a habit. I like doing the drill where we drag the poles next to us, it really helped me keeping that balance which i struggle with, and let me focus on edging my skis and then going low as the speed increased. When im going this weekend again ill try to work on my engagement of the edges with the ankles and then the knees on slow speed and then hips when im faster to get a low stance and to avoid the A-frame. Hopefully i can get a nice video of me doing few carves this weekend. There is so much i want to ask about, but i also dont want to write more than i already did. Thanks for helping me out! Ok one thing i rly wanna know: how do i weigh the outside ski without putting pressure on it to "float" through my turns?

Ollie I mean that wasn’t my point but either way have u ever heard of... oh idk... that Shifferin girl? Or maybe u haven’t heard of Lindsey Vonn, Bode Miller, Ted Ligety... some of the most dominant skiers ever and all of them are from the greatest country on Earth, the USA. My point was there’s no one from Finland that is good... search up World Cup skiers from Finland and the top results are about Levi, a race in Finland, and then it goes to articles about Mikaela Shifferin.

Robocop: good for making medium level skiers sit on their tails.

It's more of a drill for ski racers - to keep their upper body from blocking leg movement. Also, after such a training, when you have your hands in front of you, it's easier for you to put a pressure on the front. Trust me, i tried it a couple of times, it's really a good drill. Not for the beginners though

Yeah, I know it's a good drill for advanced skiers but I see it so many times done horribly, and instructors trying to push it to average skiers that I almost consider it a bad idea to even try it.

May I ask what was the difficulty level of the slope in this video, blue slope or red? I want to do the same drills but am worried if I do them on red slope, I would be totally focusing on controlling the speed instead of techniques.
