Hi, Tom. I'm 66 & have been a full time ski bum for 40 years. I only recently discovered that there were ski videos on YT. Talk about late to the party. I'm not much of a subscriber, but I subscribed to your channel. Due in large part because you have the courtesy to respond to folks in the comment section. I have a story that goes to your comment about skiing too aggressively for conditions. The last day of this season I made a miscalculation with a semi brutal result when I was down & dirty making quick turns as is my habit. I was test driving a pair of 177 Volkyl Deacons from my shop. I had put a 2 degree side edge on them & they were wicked sharp. They skied like a dream all day long in the soft spring snow. There was a pitch halfway down my last run that wasn't super steep, but it had a nasty sidehill pitch to the left. And it was in the shade, so it was refreezing. I was at full tilt making short turns when I hit the pitch. A little voice told me to slow down, but I didn't. I was on the steepest part of the sidehill when I wrecked. Go figure. I was coming off a left turn with my legs extended down the sidehill. As my legs passed under me going up the sidehill, there wasn't enough room. The Volkyls hooked up way before I was expecting them to & I got stuffed & launched. My right ski was still hooked up doing its carving thing, but in the wrong direction. My left ski was going generally in the right direction, but several feet in the air. If my right ski had been so sensible, I might have saved it. Instead, I slid & spun about thirty yards in a cloud of snow with my right ski trapped under my butt. Then I stood up & took a bow. The only thing missing was my right pole & my pride. A little kid brought me my pole & I was on my merry way. But if I had wrecked closer to the trees I might have made the news. Anyway, I thought I'd share this story to emphasize your point that sometimes you need to reel it in a little. Thanks for your videos. I know they're hard work.
@Triggerboy623 жыл бұрын
Wow, thanks for the story and for the honor of having you as a subscriber. Hahaa your story is great. Glad you did not make the news that day but hopefully you will continue to be as lucky in the future. I have also had lots of close calls and they come for the most part unannounced and for the rest, ignored. I mean, we all have that warning bell go off but still we continue as if thrilled to find out what can happen. My close call this season was when I was filming follow cam Chris carving and he made a very tight turn and I skied right over the tails of his skis. A crash could have been deadly. Gotta be more careful.... Thank you G for making it to the next level :)
@ArcFixer3 жыл бұрын
@@Triggerboy62 Hi. Worst wreck I ever had was when I skied over the tails of someone's skis some 15 years ago. It was on a cat track skiing from the lodge to the lift after lunch with friends. There were like 6 of us in a tight pack just traveling straight & fast down the cat track in casual mode. Suddenly, one of the pack cut hard right in front of me for some reason. We were so close when I cut hard left to avoid him, my tips clipped his tails. His tails took my tips with them hard right when the rest of me was moving hard left. The result was an instant military grade full body face plant on the hard flat cat track. I hit so hard I bounced. It rattled every bone in my body. I was lucky I didn't get run over by one of the pack behind me just for good measure. Even without getting run over, it really hurt. I didn't get run over, but no one stopped to check on me either. I didn't hold it against them. Anyone who witnessed the violence of my impact figured I was dead anyway, and it was a powder day. .
@Triggerboy623 жыл бұрын
@@ArcFixer yes, no friends on a powder day. Also, those hits you take usually don't look so bad but on a cat track where the surface is almost flat the impact is worse than on a steep pitch. But that is so relatable. Skiing on cat tracks is dangerous. I remember very well so many close calls skiing with my kids when they were small, particularly Chris, because he had to go over jumps all the time and on a cat track he all of a sudden turned hard right or left to the side of the track to go over a jump or just off trail. Much faster skiers, just like myself many times, passing him on the side, were cut off. Luckily nothing ever happened. When I was a teenager I once goofed around, never do that but how can you resist when you are 16 and skiing with girls, and fell on my own ski pole in such way that it poked me with the handle right in my ear. This was before helmets became popular. I think as an instructor and coach it is important to teach the kids how to behave and seek the thrills and the excitement out of actual skiing and not out of goofing around. Want to go fast, start training SG and DH in a ski racing club. Wanna jump, join a freestyle club.

I just went to "ski" touring the for first time. First snow of the year, on my own almost alone on the fresh slope I could do anything I wanted. From barely controlling the stand, to failing at the wedge the second try, to somewhat carving turns on my third ride (after going up on rando) and realizing I was driving a speed car with no breaks, wedge doesn't work when going straight down! Im glad I used my climbing ⛑️ that slam was terrifying but I managed to test my limits... I am crazy to go again! This was superb, like there is so much drill to work on and improve it's thrilling and the realization of you going down with such control and confidence on a "moderate slope" when you are almost flying down! Amazing.

@@Triggerboy62 Thanks for your reply. A bit of both I think. I want to be able to go down any gradient with confidence using a well developed short swing. @@Triggerboy62 Just thought I'd give you some feedback on my skiing last week. I've skied A LOT! But I learned with narrow skis with a lot of emphasis on foot steering and pivoting. I've found the transition to carving, especially the initial movement quite difficult, despite being a CSIA Level 2. Well I put your progressions into practice last week in Les Arcs, with wide slopes and excellent snow. Using Salomon Ti Force skis with 80mm underfoot, I was able to 'feel' the initial movements you describe in the video. Throughout the week, I progressed through the levels and really believe I've finally made some progress. I had a couple of questions, in the final phase of the turn I found myself too far in the back seat, feeling my calf against the boot. Is this because I need to move my inside leg more forward and earlier? Secondly, the final level of your video, where there is limited upper body motion, is that the same as abdominal unweighting? Thanks very much

I have always wondered about the nuances of carving on a steep slope. This video is an A to Z of it. Carving with skid turn (hybrid) approach seems like the perfect way to manage speed on the steeper slopes. 🙏🏼 Thank you.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, hybrid carving, nice definition BTW, is such a useful technique. I use it all the time and Chris has turned it into a deadly weapon on the race course. Your excellent in description and progression. Reminds me of a most blessed day , meeting and having the opportunity to ski as a young child with Stein Erickson at Sugar Bush. Even though the tech was different , his ability to have you visualize and look closely at good technique and subtleties of body position was priceless. Coming back to skiiig after 22,years was interesting with the parabolics. Saw them coming in as i left in 98. Thank god I’ve stayed top notch functional in strength and speed , the return was interesting for 3 days in 2020 as pandemic hit . So coming across some good videos. This is the Spirit of Stein! Good going . I’m Set and ready this year! Keep it coming! Essentially, skiing is timeless in its core principles

Wow, what a nice story. Thank you for sharing. Meeting people like you out on the hill or here on the www is soooo inspiring. Yes, we need to keep the spirit going... never met Stein but he must have been an amazing person to ski with. Hold on to that memory, gold. The parabolic skis put a new twist on things but other than that things are looking much the same. The most important ones anyway, the mountains the people. Thanks for watching :)

@@Triggerboy62 His cadence was so close to yours. Just pulled out some pictures of both of us on the mountain Biiiiig Head skis, and my first Munari buckle boots…Ha ! I had to be around 8, 1973. Guy had me vadeling in two days.He was probably one of the most influential people to Americas ski schools , next to Schoenknecht, (Developer of Mount snow in Vermont) .

Thank you!!! Lucky her. Be sure to send links to my beginner lessons as well. Always start with wedging. It pays off big time. And if done according to my advice, parallel skiing and carving will be easier.

Now I understand when you raise up and release your weight before starting the next turn and when you should "roll"your knees directly into the next turn; also how your weight distribution and joint angles are different for both types of skiing and terrain; I'm 75 and retired..going to put this lesson to work for 4 weeks of skiing starting next week..I have seen many videos using "carv"and plan to purchase the inserts and app..I only took one, one hr group lesson in my life, so I guess it time to start learning...Thanks for the video.

Hi, thank you for your nice comment. Yes, the CARV inlays and app are incredible helpful. I recommend highly. Cheers, Tom

excellent video triggerboy ... and as you say, this is just a "basic" understanding ... there is lots more, but the idea of keeping the ski on edge, which is the most important aspect of carving is clearly defined here and is what must be impressed upon the novice mind. Your crosscountry drill and fishook and j turns on nice easy runs are instrumental in understanding what the ski can actually do. You can actually think and feel what is happening, you have the time ... anything faster, you're too busy reacting as opposed to thinking and noticing what is happening ... Defined tracks, clear, concise, tight or it not carving and only way to understand this is in these basic drills and others of like respect.

Thank you for watching and for taking time and writing such a good feedback. Yes, so much of learning how to carve lies in being patient and really getting to understand what the ski can do for you. Well said. Thanks :)
