Thank you very much for all the fantastic ideas. I was wondering how complicated it is to pay the tax on side hustle especially if you have a couple at the same time? Many thanks.
@TheHumblePenny4 жыл бұрын
Hi Shiva It isn't complicated depending on how you structure your financial life. For example, all things to do with The Humble Penny is done via a Limited Company structure. I have others incomes too that go via others e.g. PAYE. Key thing to remember with side hustle income is that you pay tax at your top rate of tax on any side hustle income (if done directly via your name). Except for income that's exempt from income tax. Sounds like I should make a video about #sidehustle and taxes 🤔

A friend and I started our side hustle a few years ago. We invested in silent disco headphones and hired them out for private parties. Within 3 years I made enough to save for a deposit on my first home. We opened the company as a limited company and took no wages (both of us full time jobs), just dividends each year. We ended up working with some big names and sold the company after the 3 years (specialist market that is now floded with other small companies). Side hustles are not easy money, you need to be motivated and committed, but if you get it right can be rewarding! A few years on, im looking to get into another side hustle! Great content. Subscribed!

I started a side hustle by accident when I posted 1 KZbin video years ago. Then I sourced wholesale hair and beauty products and launched an online store (this is what the people in the comments on that video was asking for). I was able to quit my job and it’s now my full time business. I made 5 figures my first year and then 6 figures the next year. It’s hard work but you can do it if you put in the time and effort.

I'm different.....I am 59 years old! I work full-time in the UK but have a side hustle as a personal trainer. Fitness is my passion. However, the market is saturated with young people offering personal training services. The difference with me is that I am qualified to help the obese and/or are diabetic. Also, I help people in the over 50s age range. Older people can become intimidated by a 20-something PT whereas I can relate more to them. I want to start my own youtube channel on this topic. I also want to do a separate one about travel in the UK to places that do not attract so many overseas visitors such as smaller towns and villages. My wife and me love travelling in the UK so why not share our passion? Great channel by the way. I have now subscribed.

Just in case this is helpful to anyone. A few years back I found the NFU Mutual good for small businesses. I suppose it's because many farmers diversify with, sometimes quite unusual, side businesses. They didn't insure in some regions though, although this might have changed by now. They don't just cater for farmers by the way. I was never a farmer 😄

Here' a question - I just withdrew from an MBA because I thought it wouldn't benefit my career in any way on top of my chartered accountancy. Do you think it helped you?
@TheHumblePenny4 жыл бұрын
Where were you going to do the MBA? What do you see the career becoming? Who was going to pay for the course? (You or employer or both?) My MBA was AMAZING! Yes, it opened many doors and continues to. Basically, it has offered me more i) Authority , ii) Networks, iii) Life time learning (yearly electives for free), iv) Lifetime access, v) Knowledge and Understanding, etc.
@pandabossanna4 жыл бұрын
@@TheHumblePenny Interesting! I didn't think of the authority and networks thing. Someone once said to me it would make me look like I'm just badge collecting... It was going to be with Middlesex Uni but it was mostly a self-taught course so not much classroom based learning. That's what put me off a lot! Paid for by employer though... I'm aiming for director level.
@TheHumblePenny4 жыл бұрын
Where you choose to do it matters. A very important factor. In the UK, I'd personally recommend 3 places - Judge Business School (Cambridge), Saïd Business School (Oxford) and London Business School. There are ofcourse many other decent places, but I don't know a great deal about them. Doing an MBA isn't guaranteed to get you to Director level. It certainly gives you more options and it's expected that you'd get there. However, you have to do the work to make it happen. And you can do it without an MBA. The other point to make is that a director level is just one possibility. Another way to look at this whole thing is to ask yourself how else you can achieve the thing thay you *ultimately* want. A director level is just one possible vehicle. It's not the thing.

I'm hoping to open up an online sculpt shop this year :) I don't get much time to sculpt outside of work, but I love it, and given that I spend my day-job sat behind a monitor, sculpting something physical is really therapeutic, and if I can sell it and earn money from it, then why not! We're definitely not part of your usual demographic of millennials. I'm 55 and my husband's 50. We're a long way from London. No side hustles yet, though I have been self employed a couple of times in the past. I became disabled a few years ago and we kept thinking I would recover sufficiently to get out into the workplace. This hasn't happened. We both had a caring role for an adult child with disabilities, but they recently moved into independent accomodation. At one point my husband became ill too, thankfully he's fine now, though he tires more easily. He currently works semi full time as he needs to provide some care for me, but we're sure we can find extra ways to earn income that fit around our needs. So we're looking at doing things differently. This is a complete reset year for us. We're starting from bottom. Everything in our life is renegotiable, including where and how we live and work.
