Can you please tell me what type of cloverseed is safe for dogs? Thank you.
@garden-club10 ай бұрын
White Clover and Micro Clover are safe for dogs, as long as they do not ingest them in large quantities. If you mix it with grass seed, the chance of that happening is much smaller. If you really want to go safe, you can consider Red Clover, Crimson Clover or Strawberry Clover. But these are less common for lawns.@@margkalinowski2033

I'm fortunate in that I live in a rural area, without a home owners association telling me how to maintain my yard. Right now my front yard is a sea of white clover blossoms. Earlier in the spring, the yard was a sea of violets. I only mow about 0.5 acres/0.2 hectares, and very little of it is grass. "Weeds" and moss dominate the non-wooded part of my property.

That sounds like a garden to envy! And great for biodiversity!

Our yard is mostly white clover. Simple to take care of, beautiful to look at. Never have understood why people call it a weed, it isn't.

That sounds wonderful! It's definitely not a weed! :)

Nice video. Any recommendations for clover varieties under shade?
@garden-club9 ай бұрын
Thank you! For shaded areas, consider planting white clover (Trifolium repens) or alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum). Both are tolerant of partial shade and can thrive in areas with limited sunlight.

What types of clover do you reccomend for the toronto area?
@garden-club9 ай бұрын
I would recommend micro clover (a variety of white clover, Trifolium repens) for its resilience, low maintenance and compatibility with cool season grasses - which you probably have in your lawn.

I keep bees in my yard so I e converted about 1/4 of an acre into 100% white clover so far(working on 100%) it’s a constantly White Sea of flowers with thousands of my bees and hundreds of butterflies all over at all times of the spring summer and fall. 👏

I live in Northern Virginia and my front and side yard get baked during the summer. What clover or blend do you recommend? Thx
@garden-club4 ай бұрын
I think the best option for your yard is microclover, or a microclover and drought-tolerant grass mix. This provides resilience, heat tolerance, and a uniform lawn appearance.

Do you have a chart or video on how to chose which clover is best?

Not yet! I personally find this article very useful: lawnlove.com/blog/landscaping-types-of-clover/ It also gives the hardiness zones for each clover type they cover.

@@garden-clubThanks - I have the same question about different options for clover. I think I initially overseeded with white clover a few years ago and last year tried micro clover, but might have overseeded too late in late fall. I am interested not only for my yard in Texas discussed above, but also for pasture land in NW Colorado.

How do you control unwanted weeds in a clover lawn? All the broad weed killers also kill clover? I'm 6 months into a growing a test patch of mini clover and seeing unwanted weeds. Pulling them is unsustainable. Thx
@garden-club9 ай бұрын
Totally understand. Weeding between all the clover is quite a job. You can try to overseed the clover. Or some pre-emergent herbicides are available that do not harm clover and prevent the germination of weed seeds. For example Corn Gluten Meal is a natural pre-emergent that is sometimes used in organic gardening. Its effectiveness can vary, and it needs to be applied at the right time in the spring before weed seeds germinate.

would you recommend clover lawn for tropical area? i’m talking south east asian countries
@garden-club8 ай бұрын
Clover can certainly do well in South-East Asia! It may be suitable for shady, well-drained areas in a tropical garden, especially when mixed with other grasses or ground covers native to the region. White Clover (Trifolium repens) or Strawberry Clover (Trifolium fragiferum) are a good choice because of their heat and drought tolerance.

I keep a clover lawn in my backyard to control the deer and rabbit population from eating the plants in my garden. They would rather eat the clover than munch on my garden plants.

Do ticks like clover lawns?
@garden-club9 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, they can also be found in clover lawns. But ticks are not particularly attracted to clover itself. They are more attracted to the conditions that certain environments provide. Ticks prefer areas that are moist and provide protection, such as tall grass, brush and wooded areas. A well-maintained (clover) lawn, especially one that is mowed regularly to keep it short, does not provide an ideal environment for ticks. However, any lawn can harbor ticks if it borders wooded areas, contains tall grass, or has wildlife passing through. The key to reducing the presence of ticks is maintaining your lawn and minimizing conditions that promote their survival and reproduction.

What do you think about micro clover? What breed of clover would be best to overseed a hot Texas lawn?
@garden-club10 ай бұрын
Micro clover is a good option for Texas, as is white clover (Trifolium repens). You can also look into mixing it with Buffalograss or Bermudagrass for example. Or diversify even more and try scarlet pea, frogfruit, or ruellias for example. All of these plants create a hearty and appealing ground cover, flower annually, and are native to many Texas regions. Regardless of the region, it is always good to look for native wildflowers to enrich your lawn and keep it green year round.

@@garden-clubThanks for the reply. I've also seen reference to small leaf white clover and wonder if that implies there is a larger leaf white clover. I've also seen mention of wild clover with small leaves, but haven't seen where to buy seeds. It's also confusing that white clover is mentioned as well as Dutch clover and to add to the confusion - Dutch White Clover.
@garden-club10 ай бұрын
@@davebean2886 There are indeed different varieties of white clover, including those with smaller and larger leaves. "Small leaf white clover" typically refers to varieties that have smaller leaves, which are often preferred for lawns due to their more compact growth. I guess that’s why they specifically named this one “small leaf”. "Dutch clover" and "Dutch White Clover" usually refer to the same type. It can be a bit confusing with the different names, but they all belong to the species “Trifolium repens”. For purchasing seeds, you might want to check (online) garden centers or local nurseries. For your yard in Texas and pasture in NW Colorado, considering the different climates, micro clover could work well in Texas for a denser lawn look, while white clover might be better suited for the pasture in Colorado due to its resilience and ability to support livestock grazing. Always check the specific requirements for each type of clover, such as soil conditions and water needs, to ensure successful growth in both locations. Timing is crucial when seeding clover; ideally, it should be done in spring or early fall to ensure proper establishment before extreme weather.

My accidental semi clover lawn turned into clover BUSHES, which meant i then had to mow IN WINTER, when noone else had to!
@garden-club8 ай бұрын
It sounds like your clover has been unusually vigurous! Normally, clovers in a lawn do not grow into 'bushes', but they can become quite robust under certain conditions. For example, during a warm winter, or if the grass stressed harder than the clover (for example by mowing too short). Or maybe the conditions of your soil are a little too good for clover ;)
