There are lots of British actors able to pull off convincing American accents. Henry Cavill currently playing Superman, Andrew Garfield brought up in London playing Spiderman, Damian Lewis the lead in Homeland and Band of Brothers TV series, Dominic West as Det. Mcnulty in the long running TV series the Wire, Hugh Laurie the lead in House, Tom Hiddleston singing as Hank Williams in I saw the light, Daniel Day Lewis born to an English mother in London etc etc. A recent one that has most fooled is British actor Joe Alwyn who landed the lead roll as an American soldier in Iraq, straight out of drama school in Ang Lee's film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk. Dominic West wins the prize though. Some people from Baltimore think he is a local whereas he is posh being an Old Etonian like Hiddleston and Lewis.

Switching to American accent must not be that big a deal since so many British actors (men and women) work in American. Cary Grant was British and he developed a kind of trans Atlantic accent.

Canadians can also trace ancestry back to Scotland the founder of Banff in Canada for instance named the place after his birthplace of Banff on the northeast coast of Scotland also my birthplace I'd love to go to Banff in Canada not just for a holiday/vacation but to make some comparisons between the two and to see any similarities .
