No 15: there is a conflict between Andy (jock) and Bender where Andy tells him "Speak for yourself." Bender counters: "You think I'd speak for you? I don't even speak your fucking language." Then, after they all bond with the confessional, and smoke weed together, Andy goes on a tear, dancing around the library as the rest of them watch, happily. He runs into a room, slams the door shut, SCREAMS, and the glass door of the window breaks. What is written on that glass door? FOREIGN LANGUAGE. Hughes' visual metaphor of a scream of pain, shattering the language barrier between his characters is so brief that most people miss it. But it, like the film, is beautiful.

I am a 1986 high school grad from Indiana: (1) Muppet folders - Muppets were a "thing" like a mascot for some teen girls (like snoopy, garfield, etc) (2) Brian's wardrobe - wearing sweatshirts wrong side out was a quirky fashion thing; we all did it, also unmatching tube socks were done to represent the colors of the various teams you liked

I gotta say, I think this is a Millennial's list. Lots of these things were ordinary. Other than the scene-setting shots in the opening title sequence...I don't think anyone missed many of these things, because there was nothing to catch. Graffiti on school property was common place back them; Everybody watched the Muppets; Wearing a sweatshirt inside out is a thing (at least it was); Don't know what to say about "doesn't look like a Prince fan." Prince was the most popular thing out there; Dude, nobody missed the white basketball shoe, or Clark flipping the bird. Nobody.

Fashion in the 80s was known for being eccentric. Inside out shirts, 2 different shoes and socks, bandanas around your leg or wrist, jeans ripped and rolled, were very common. Brian wearing 2 different socks, or his sweater being inside out doesn't mean he couldn't dress himself. Looks more like an attempt at wearing his clothes in a way that was cool. However his wardrobe is what you would have seen a nerd wear, implying he was a nred trying to look cool. Bender literally jumps out of the shoe. Hard to miss.

Giving Hughes the benefit of the doubt and say he left the original 1980 poster on the door to show how the school faculty doesn't give a shit. and I kind of remember some kids having sweatshirts where the stitching looked inside out so maybe it was the fashion at the time.
@messengeroftruth2647
@messengeroftruth2647 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent point about the poster, so true so true. And the sweatshirts also. The whole 'thing' of 'school' itself is a joke. Type in youtube search 'Schools Are Prisons', and check out all the videos-they tell the real reasons of what school is-something that should never exist and that we never should have gone to.

Biffy Tannen - Oakton Community College is a north suburban institution. My theory is that John Hughes had the flier - having grown up in Northbrook - and didn’t think anyone would key in on the date. Part of the movie was filmed at the abandoned Maine North HS in Des Plaines, and part at other locations around the north suburbs. Who knows.

I think the OHIOST license plate on Andrew’s father’s car was meant to imply that was his alma mater... in a way it is consistent with the idea that his dad hasn’t let go of the whole jock mentality, and is living vicariously through his son, hence the immense pressure he puts on him.

Just an absolute classic! I was literally 16 years old when this movie was made (which makes me the same age of Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall!) and it really resonated with me because even though my high school didn't have Saturday detention (and I was able to hide any of my particular shenanigans at the time, so I basically never had detention) it really made me feel as if that could've been ANY mid-80s high school at that time. The clothing, the concerns and attitudes of the characters, that anticipatory feel of being in HS at the time, it all made sense to me. My friends and I would get together almost every weekend and watch John Hughes movies and it felt as if they were specifically made for my generation (which was the point, I suppose!) Movies such as Pretty in Pink, Ferris Buellers Day Of, Sixteen Candles and a few other silly but beloved gems will always stay with me when I'm feeling nostalgic. I miss those wonderful days and I'd give anything to have that time back. It's almost a rite of passage for my generation and a true testament to how the world was way back in the days of relative innocence, mild rebellion and that wonderful, 1980s soundtracks that bring us back to those days of our teenage years so poignantly.

Hey, so you were talking about the date on the poster. I don't know any behind-the-scenes stuff, but at my college they usually hang posters of things that happened already and they keep hanging there for years, so I would just assume it is normal :D

brilliant insights! enhances the movie and makes it even more enjoyable! The way our eyes see things, we see it all, take it all in, but only COMPREHEND so much, that's why the more you watch the same thing, you'll start to see things you always saw the first time, but just didn't focus on them, and/or comprehend them, it's amazing, life is this way, no camera, person can 'control' life, there's so much going on all the time, we only see/notice a part/fraction of what is really going on/the big picture.

Another little detail that nobody has pointed out is the scene in which the janitor Carl first walks into the detention room and starts talking to the students. Carl says, "I look through your letters. I look through your lockers...." Then the camera cuts immediately to John Bender, who looks surprised probably because he realizes that Carl has seen the marijuana that Bender keeps there. The audience wouldn't notice this since it's only in a later scene that the students all go to Bender's locker and he gets out the bag of weed. But watching the movie half a dozen times, this little detail really sticks out to me.

Also take the self promotional singing video at the beginning out. Honestly it is quite distracting and unnecessary. Dude get to the point. If I didn't really want to know your opinion I would have turned you off. Professional tip!! Other then that excellent analysis!!

You also missed that Brian's mom and sister in the beginning are played by his actual mom and sister. And guess who his dad is at the ending? JOHN HUGHES!!! He apparently wrote much of Brian's character based on himself in highschool....poor John!
