14-year-old Bobby Fischer meets the Caro-Kann

Featured is the instructive chess game between 14-year-old Bobby Fischer and William Addison from the 1957 United States Open. The opening is a Caro-Kann Defense, Two Knights Attack, where after only 8 moves we observe pawn majorities and an endgame phase. Watch how the young Fischer activates his "healthy" queenside majority, and essentially simplifies the endgame as if only kings and pawns remain.

The nuances of b6 before c6 near the end are what I enjoy most about chess at this stage of my journey. Sure, learning smothered mates and gambits and sacrificing is fun, but these kind of moves where your opponent just goes “ah shit” and realises it’s all over are so fun to find.

In your variation recommending … f5! around 11:00 (immediately following white's push to d5) it appears that black can force the rook exchange by … Re2+ forking WK and WN (the latter looking fugly on f2). In which case white responds Rd2, so black plays Rxd2, white recaptures with K or B, black captures on d5 and his positional disadvantage has pretty much evaporated?

The knight will move to e2 and pressure the advanced pawn so you'll have to use another move to defend it. Due to the pawn on c6 the knight that would normally do that job can't so you end up playing c5. This line wastes several tempi when you could instead be developing your pieces. c3 can also be played adding additional pressure to the advanced d pawn so it creates an easy weakness for white to keep the initiative.

what slightly bothers me is the commentary over fischer's shoulder.. yes of course lets look how we can help the stronger player. the other one is the enemy so we dont care about his moves.... only the souless computer can look in that direction, but we dont care about that anyway. why would we analyze black moves, so little time and so little interest in white's

For sure there is a focus primarily on the side who wins. There are certainly more thorough approaches to covering a game, resulting in significantly lengthier videos. I prefer to keep game review videos somewhat bite-sized. On the other side of the coin there’s an audience out there who would prefer I “just show the moves of the game”. 😎 Thanks for watching. 👍
