Yes, and it's actually a very interesting point. I was taught this in my first digital security course: most definitions of "security" include "availability" amongst the parameters because otherwise the safest computer would be one disconnected from electricity, in antarctica, inside a fully enclosed metal/concrete cube with no way to access it, guarded by armed patrols. Same deal with whatever a lock is meant to guard: as long as there is a *legitimate* way to get in, its safety is necessarily compromised... But if you want to also be able to USE whatever you're locking, that's the price you have to pay.

Compare this to other information channels that are 10-15 minutes long and usually have a hypothetical question for the title. After a quick subject history lesson before naming the sponsor, then asking and rephrasing the question of the video, then getting to the actual sponsor bit, then answer the question, you can get frustrated that they are not getting to the point. LPL explains the lock, gives a reason for showing it. Shows the tool he's going to use and then picks it. There is no padding or sponsor. You know exactly what you are going to get.

Hi all. I've been doing this on a few cars and have managed to open all of them - some quickly, some in quite a while. However, if I have any tips for you, it would be to not over-focus on the binding wafers. Instead, reduce your turning pressure and zero in the subtle wafers, particularly the ones that generate a bit of rotation. Oddly enough, on everyone I've unlocked, it's always been the case that only some of the wafers needed to be picked, and many of the binding ones were untouched. So if you have had no luck, change your approach and go for finesse and not attack.

With car locks, there may be electronic ways of both getting in and disabling the immobiliser: recently a few miles away from me, someone had a locked Range Rover Vogue stolen from a supermarket car park, apparently with no visible signs of entry (presumably via CCTV footage since it hadn't been recovered by the time of the police statement), and likely not by opportunists, given the vehicle's tracker was removed...
@joeblow52143 жыл бұрын
Key Fobs transmit a signal along way, so it's trivial with the right software and hardware to copy the signal signature from the fob which is almost always broadcasting, and use a piece of hardware that retransmits the signal and can even defeat the interlock, tracking, and even make a new key. These devices are on sale on the web for a several thousand dollars.
@ejonesss3 жыл бұрын
car alarms and interlocks only work if they have to be disarmed with the key fob first. since manufacturers dont expect the locks to get picked i doubt they would require the alarm and interlocks to be handled by the keyfob only and may only protect against forced entry. however hopefully now that these videos are out there car makers will start to see the need to add additional security should the lock get picked if they have not already

i’m not sure about all cars, but my car sounds the alarm when the mechanical key is used instead of the remote, presumably because the owner should rarely be using the actual key and it’s reasonably likely that the door was picked instead. also, this tool is specific to only some car models and years, and costs quite a bit. it’s unlikely that the average car thief would have one of these because they’d need a bunch for all different cars. smashing a window is a much simpler optionz
@martineyles3 жыл бұрын
@@boxr_4214 So I suppose the message is to not leave valuables on show, to avoid a quick smash and grab from an opportunist. Luckily, any valuables I have tend to be out of sight in the boot.
@type173 жыл бұрын
As Boxr_4 says, most thieves will just break a window for items in the car. These picking tools are mainly used in the trade to re-key a car where the keys are not available (stolen/recovered, repossessed, etc). You can note the setting for each pin, and then cut a new key from that info (the radio-link to the immobiliser is another matter, though - you'll need to take the car to an Audi dealer with proof of ownership - but a key lets you unlock the steering to get it on the truck).
@vaisravana20923 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is probably true. I mean I would not expect a thief being after random valuables possibly stored in random cars to carry a stack of specialized tools for various car brands with him just on the off chance he spots one with a wallet inside. If a thief carries a specialized tool I would assume they would rather be after the car itself or various high priced parts in an organized operation.
@MorellioBenoir3 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you tried this on a car the alarm would go off for sure. This'd be most useful if your battery died and you wanted to get in to pop the hood without paying for a locksmith to do it. They'd probably just separate the door from the frame and unlock it from the inside though. :)
