Note: Duel point models will have two timing marks on the wheel "F" and "R" for front and rear. If your wheel is marked like that and you are running single points be sure you are timing off of the "F" mark. With duals, it should be self explanitory. Tech Tip: The timing mark is actually marked on the circuit breaker housing with a line. The sliding, clamping band end (outboard, closest to you) should be aligned with it or damned close. It can be found about where the empty hole (that the lid retainer ring isn't) is. I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is it, but it might be visible at 10:29 in the video. Another Tip: If you are running some sort of fancy electronic ignition, never, ever fire it off without the plugs grounded. It tends to let the smoke out if you do ☺ One of your biggest fans, Drift (heh)

I turn the engine backwards after the light goes out turning it forward as that is the closest to when the engine run and all gears etc is under load.

The condenser make the magnetic field in the primary coil collapse fast, generating a high voltage in the secondary field generating the spark plug spark. As a secondary function it prevents a spark to be generated over the point. But its not its primary function, Its to get the field to collapse fast. That is the reason you cant run without condenser, if the purpose only was to prevent spark over the points, you should be able to run without it. But as we know it does not work that way. And the coil ans condenser is matched, for maximum performance.

i didn't know that. i do know that there is power to be had if you play around with different ones. tatro

@@TatroMachine Of course, if the condenser is tuned to the primary coil. causing the magnetic field to collapse faster, the higher the voltage. Thanks for all the good work you do here, Its an inspiration.

Does the front cyl need to be removed to install one of these distributors

@@MotoRanch101 No and yes. Early Pans have smaller fins and the distributor slips easily without removing the head, but later Pans (56 to early 60s) have way bigger fins and the distributor cannot be removed - it hits the fins. Just had this on my Panhead with 61 heads. Wasn't able to remove the distributor but didn't want to take off the head as well, so I lifted the cylinder with the head about 2 inches of the motor and was able to slip the timer off. I always put grease (instead sealant) on the gaskets so they don't rip when disassembled. So the gasket under the cylinder survived when I lifted the cylinder. I swapped the timers and put the cylinder down on the same gasket. Btw that's why Ryan's timer base was butchered - apparently someone couldn't take it off because of the later heads and they didn't want to dump the head off so they cut the timer base on the motor and removed it.

@@motometalmind I appreciate the detailed response, both my pans are earlier 48 and 53 so I lucked out 🤓
