99 percent of the time I do not use any herbicides. Recently I needed to speed the process up because I was behind schedule, so I did apply herbicide to the field first.

Do you ever plant millet and say sunflowers together mixed in the field? Results?
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 жыл бұрын
I tried one year, sunflowers don't compete well with weeds, you need some serious money in specific herbicides for sunflowers. I've tried a lot of stuff, nothing is as easy to grow as brown top millet, and the doves love it!

What kind of ATV spreader is that? And did you use that to spread the seed and fertilizer?
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
If you look in the description on any of our videos, You'll see a link to our Amazon storefront. I have the spreader listed in there if you want to see what it runs. I use the spreader for seed, because the seed is so tiny and I get very good control with a four wheeler spreader. Using a tractor spreader I can't see it and you wind up putting out too little or way too much. Sometimes I use the 4-wheeler spreader for fertilizer, but when doing large amounts like this, I tend to use the tractor spreader.

Here in Indiana the dove go for black sunflower seed. The recreation areas would plant sunflowers in fields with sorghum around the outside of the field for the hunters to hide in. It's a shoot fest
@TKCL

Sunflower seeds are the best fields to plant in my opinion. With that said they require a lot of money, work and herbicides to be successful. Ive tried them several times and the weeds just took over. Millet requires practically nothing other than fertilizer if the seed bed is well taken care of.

I’m gonna have fun this next spring burning fields and discing them in. Borrowing a cabbed tractor and a 9ft disc from my grandpa. It’s going to be fun. I wish my 3032e had a cab. Good video by the way

Can you come to Virginia and work for the Wildlife Management areas here because the people that run them are a complete joke. Last year they planted stuff in June so when September came the sunflowers with the size of a quarter and there's so much grass in it the doves have nowhere to even land I've seen three doves in the past two years where I go
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Sunflowers are very tough to plant, they are susceptible to weeds and require very expensive herbicides. I tried them one year and had relatively large seed heads. The weeds took over for me as well since I wasn't willing to spend the money on herbicides. I don't know why more places don't plant brown top, it works great and is easy to maintain. I seen a lot of dove today leaving my plot. Take care!

I did that a few episodes ago, all I was trying to do was fluff up the soil and level it for my seed bed. Everything in that field was volunteer brown top millet from last year. I wasn't trying to cut it in, it's a bonus to be growing with my newly planted millet.

great info bud. we do a sunflower field here in virginia. been doing it for 14 years. a lot of time money and mistakes have gone into it!! we are looking to add millet next year to the field. I was looking at dove white proso millet just because it tends not to germinate on the ground when you cut it if it rains. but your browntop looks excellent. one thing is for sure we will have a flail mower for next year. been looking at our local agri supply who carries the 52 inch caroni. that thing would work wonders on our sunflowers and corn as well as millet. just found the channel so i look forward to more videos.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, I planted proso one year and I remember it coming up again the next year as volunteer. Nothing seems to come back like brown top, you can't hardly kill the stuff. Without a doubt, brown top is the easiest to plant and maintain of anything I've tried. I highly recommend the caroni Flail mowers from agri supply, I've had mine for years and it has been excellent.

Is that a homemade roller packer you made? Also triple 13 is a great fertilizer I used it a month ago on my 7 acre area that I put done grass seed earlier in the year. Wished I used it sooner.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I made that roller packer myself out of propane cylinders. I just bent it with my tractor digging things out of the old barn site that was hit by the tornado. I hope it holds up, just don't have time to build a new one. I hope triple 13 is even better than triple 10. If so, I am in for a treat, since the other has treated me well.

Neither my friend, no kids and save up to pay cash for most things. My dad worked at a mill and my mom was a secretary later in life after raising us kids. I was fortunate enough to have parents who raised me from about 13 on with a checking account and a job. They taught me to save, work hard and pay for what I want. Property was something I desired since I was 13, I still remember the movie that I watched that put the passion in me. We save, we suffer and we have sacrificed over the years to start this dream of ours. A lot of literal blood, sweat and tears in this place.
