This is just a thought for you weld a oversized plate on the bottom of your feet. Drill a hole in the bottom for the water to drain. Weld a piece of pipe on the side for accessories like a grill.

Nice! I've made some using the ends of propane tanks also, but I cut the end off, leaving a 2' cylindrical part. Then I roll a piece of 1/4 x 2 flat to the same diameter, to make a grate that will fit exactly over the pit, pivoting it at a point directly above a leg, so that it clears the pit by about a half inch or so. I reinforce the grate, which is 3/4-#9 flat expanded metal, using more of the 1/4 x 2 flat. It's removable also. Then I would roll a piece of 1/2" rod to a diameter 1 foot larger than the pit, and weld that a couple inches below the rim using 6" standoff pieces, usually 7 or so. This serves as a handle to move the pit, and also as a foot rest for people sitting around enjoying the fire. Also, using 5 legs is more stable. As an easier option to evacuate the gas, get dry ice pellets and put some in the tank. The tank will fill with CO2 and all the other gas will be purged out. Furthermore, with no oxygen there can be no flash.

I don’t know if it would help and maybe you’ve tried it. I was an iron worker for years and we would cut a lot of our beams in the field with a Stihl chop saw with a carbon cut off blade. You can get pretty surgical with those things but they aren’t cheap. Great work

I fill with water and leave filled while cutting….. once your at least half way the likely chance of flash is extremely low. It will sometimes pop about like a .22 but no explosion due to no room for expansion…..

You should try a cutting torch with a pipeline rotatory style cutter. They make them big enough to xut that. You just gotta have it up in the air high enoy or just rotate it. Ans just a cutting torch oe plasma cutter would work to. Its up to you how much time you want to spen cutting stufd like that.

Used to Tig weld Aluminum Diesel tanks, would purge the tanks with 25 75% shield gas. Had a guy watching the gas regulator didn't freeze up on you. Still scared the hell out of me.

I used a Harbor Freight Hercules 7-1/4 in. 48Tooth Carbide tipped metal cutting saw blade in a standard circular saw to cut up an old fuel oil tank. Cut it amazingly fast, clean, and accurately. Blade currently sells for $29.99 without any coupons. I realize a fuel oil tank is likely thinner gage metal than a propane tank, but I don't think that would slow down the cut significantly. Also, I used a standard circular saw , a 30 year old craftsman that RPM wise runs faster than a true metal cutting circular saw and if I was cutting a lot of tanks might consider getting a true metal saw that runs lower RPM's. One further note, when cutting with the Harbor Freight metal cutting saw blade the chips come of HOT......wear appropriate PPE.

These tanks are 3/8 thick and almost 3/4 thick at the seam. I tried a metal cutting circular saw and it damaged the blade as the tanks warps.

Which saw? The Evolution saw? I've cut 1/2 inch steel with them, no issues. You can get thousands of cuts on thinner material.

You really need a plasma cutter. A miller inverter unit could cut the ends of in a fraction of the time and cost.

I have a plasma and have shown the rough cut left requires more time and effort to grind smooth than cutting with a cut off wheel. I've tried just about everything other than a torch.

If your building these over and over again, you could cut the tank ends off easier and faster if you turned that four wheel castor dolley into a fixed wheel cutting jig with fixed tool holder for a plasma torch,cutting torch or a angle grinder. You would just rotate the tank while the tool does the cutting.

4.2 or 4.4 gallons per minute is not high volume. That volume can be supplied by an ordinary garden hose. High volume is anything over 6 gpm. That requires a water tank & garden hose supply. I have learned these things by working in the pressure washer industry since 1974. Also, try walnut shell as a medium for the blasting material. It may work real well.

You're totally forgetting the PSI included in the GPM. Your garden hose at 10 GPM has practically no pressure. Your calculations are way off and don't calculate for velocity of the media.

Yes I do make fire rings out of them. Every pit has a 1/2 inch hole for drainage. Holes for air are not needed if you burn dry wood, I've been using pits like these for years with no problems.

Thats an interesting funghi growing next to your pipes there ... My Dad once told me no matter how old it is, don't weld a petrol tank and dont cut porpane tanks without wetting them because the fuel can get into the metal itself ...I don't know if it does but I don't like the idea of exploding either so thats always been my view. I like your wet sand blaster idea, very cool and I want some of these tanks...the fun things I could make is endless one of those would make a fantastic charcoaling unit I think a plasma cutter might be the cheapest long term way to process them but only if you can either get a lot of tanks or you have other uses for it. and I love the truck style vice and bending jig mount you have on your bench, very simple but incredibly useful
