It's not really a new thing, however. One of Assa Abloy's consumer line locks (can't remember the name of the division at the moment) had that 5 or 6 years ago. Basically, when locks with touch screen LCDs first came out, this was an early feature.

It's just like my Bitcoin hardware wallet. They randomize the keypad and only show it on the device so if my computer is compromised the hacker can't see what pin I'm entering. They even put a random number of pixels on each line so you can't use fancy tools to read the pin that way

Maybe snipping the leg of a specific capacitor causes it to read every input as correct. Could be very simple fatal flaws hidden in plain sight which is why time ends up being the greatest test

I once helped a friend install a "scramble pad" about 18-19 years ago; it's the same concept, but intended for a high-security commercial market. It was a 12-key button matrix in a telephone configuration, but each button had its own 7-segment LED, and projected through a lenticular lens, so they had a narrow viewing angle, intended to deter shoulder surfers. You'd push a button to wake it up, and the numbers are assigned a key randomly. It was weird using it, and having to fight the muscle memory you develop just from using telephones all your life!

Any lock that takes more than a minute for LpL to pick is a great lock in my books. Took him 1 minutes 33 seconds to pick. lol That, and the randomiser definitely helps the case as well. Even with the basic 123456 code, it's hard for anyone to guess by looking/spying. Especially since two random digits are repeated every time. (4 spots with 3 digits, 10 possible digits, leaving 2 repeat digits)

Sure, a locksmith that does it per the homeowners request isn't doing that illegally, but the lone fact of them HAVING to drill, instead of just opening the lock in a non-destructive way (which at least allows replacing the lock, possibly getting into some reset-to-default system allowing changing the lost combination) makes them a terrible locksmith. If I need to turn my lock into a useless piece of junk I don't have to pay a steep price for it. I can just call my brother to lend me their tools and do it for close to free.

@@kikixchannel If someone in in a white van (bonus points for a bogus locksmith company magnet on the side) shows up in front of a house and starts drilling, would any neighbors be suspicious enough to call the cops in those two minutes? Someone will put two and two together after the robbery takes place, but then you have to find the thief after they're gone and that's not as easy. A lot of locks are made such that opening the door by drilling the lock is either extremely difficult or practically impossible to prevent this sort of thing.

Personally, I assume that nearly anything that electrically opens a lock might be subject to magnetic attacks... but listen to that part of the tape again: it sounds like this lock is using a *motor* to crank the bolt open, not a solenoid... that should protect you from that particular part of the attack surface.

I know that IBM for one had keypads that do this at their facilities at least 15 - 20 years ago. They call them scrampads. They weren't touchscreen. They were like a 7 segment display behind a lens on each button that required a very specific viewing angle and of course the numbers switched around after each successful or unsuccessful code attempt.

I've had a lockly for the past couple of years, It was the only door lock that ticked all of the boxes for me. Fingerprint access so I don't have to use any keys to get inside, keycodes so that I can give access to other people/friends etc, special access keycodes for tradesmen or anybody else that I only want limited time access for, and a physical key for the _hidden_ key slot in the handle in case I bite the dust one day and people need to get inside when I'm 6 foot under. All in all I'm pretty pleased with it, even more so now that LPL didn't open his lockly with a butterfly wing or cat whisker in 0.2 seconds like he does with all the other locks.

Issue with this might be the fingerprint access. Fingerprint readers have been notoriously easy to fool in the past. Not sure how good the one on the Lockly is - but I doubt it is any different than the usual fool-able versions.

A freebie feature of the keypad is that with 12 combinations (3 numbers in 4 circles), there's even a tiny bit more randomization each time it updates. The last time you entered the passcode, you had two choices of where to enter the "2"

@@Hephera Yes but you can set the number of entries required, for example I require a 10 digit code to enter on mine (only for guests, Inhse the fingerprint otherwise). The purpose of the repeat numbers is to prevent eavesdropping attacks, for example if someone had recorded you interacting with the keypad multiple times they still would have a hard time guessing the combination due to repeated digits. Of course any determined attacker could eventually gain access or just force the lock, but every little bit helps.

That's actually not a bad idea, and you could implement that on conventional locks as well with a bit of clockwork. Open the key cover against a spring, and a mechanical clock runs down, freezing the lock after 20 seconds. You'd need to harden that cover against drilling / bending of course.

I bought this lock for all of the things that LPL said. I am glad to see this lock getting it's time in the sun. Also saw that the core was replaceable so if I felt like I needed a better one, I could just change it. But seriously, these locks are awesome. You can go fully digital and give people access with a code that expires during whatever time range you choose. We had someone watch our dog and we gave her 1 code that worked during the time we needed and then don't have to worry about her copying a key or remembering a code. We've been using it for about 2 years. The tech side of this lock is IMO, best in the industry.

I have this lock. Be aware, that if the pad is either exposed to too much direct sunlight or it is simply too hot outside you might not be able to see the numbers. Maybe mine just does that because it's old, but changing the batteries doesn't help. The only thing that helps a little is keeping it covered by something substantial enough to block light and some of the heat.

I use to work for a large military jet engine maker, and the SCIF for classified work had a randomizing combination lock on it. The lock was electronic and the window you viewed the numbers in was an LCD screen. You started turning the dial and at some random point and number it would put a number in the window and you would proceed scrolling until you arrived at the first number. Once you hit the first number and started the dial in the opposite direction it would do the same randomization of the starting point. It required a 4 number combination and the dial scrolled from 0 to 99. That was WAY BACK in the mid 90's. It seemed so high tech at the time, and I always wondered why I never have seen one since. It seems like an obvious security technology. Additionally, there was a badge scanner and one of those 5 button punch locks to open the vault door, plus a number of cameras looking at you. Once you got inside you had to know the combination to a heavy steel file cabinet, where you would get your files and hard drive from. Then you would go to an open computer pull the security curtain so you were alone, connect your hard drive log in and work.

Also, lishi aren't special. The only thing special about them is their ability to decode locks after they've been picked

Great product and company. I've had my Lockly for 3-years now, the first one got buggy after about 20-months, their customer service was great and they quickly shipped out their newest version as a replacement, which I love even more. I also have an August which I like but the Lockly is fantastic. Highly recommend, and would love seeing how to install a more secure core.

The locker rental at a local theme park works this way. You rent the locker at a central kiosk and choose your combination at that time. The combination screen rearranges itself between people to make it harder for the person behind you to see what you choose for a combination.

The self randomising feature is a great idea. At some customers at work, we have normal mechanical keypads in use and after a short period of time you can clearly see the used numbers by wear of the keys. With common 4 or 5 digit PINs this takes only as long to figuere out, as you need to pick this lock.

This is precisely what is happening in our estate quite often. Most of us have video doorbells, so we can actually track the would-be thieves as they go from door to door. Most often, they just try whether it's locked, occasionally they carry a metal tube to wiggle locks lose, and rarely we even get someone trying to pick locks. Of course, this is Ireland, where people with 200+ convictions for burglary walk freely.

Depends on just how secure the 'smart' part of the smarts are as to if that is a justifiable feeling... The keypad is good, but LPL mentioned Bluetooth, for me that is a massive 'oh no' thought, as secure and Bluetooth do not go together all that well. Not like fingerprint are secure either - heck some fingerprint sensors are foolable just from the residue finger oils left behind from the last users.. And looking at Lockly's description their 'cloud service' the locks run from is AWS backed, flaws in AWS core infrastructure do get fixed quicker than some companies would, but its also one of the big ones folks are hunting for bugs in so they are also getting found often too, and any cloud service can go away at any time, a jaded staff member might even be able to unlock every door with a lockly lock because they are all on the same cloud if it catches their fancy...

I actually owned on of these and it has a huge problem. The body suffers thermal differences in the sun and the metal expanding on one side crushing the glass. This stops the touchpad from working. The screen also burns out from even winter sunlight which tells me there isn't any UV shielding on the screen. The Cycling buttons is a great idea but these other flaws forced us to get a different lock after these failures stopped it from working.

No, the opposite. If all four buttons have unique numbers, then hitting right button by change is 1/4. If the right number is on two buttons, then you get it right by change 1/2. I don't think that is very good lock.

Definitely makes it less secure. If I have a 5 in my combo and 5 is in 2 spots, my single combo essentially turns into 2 combos, making it easier to guess.

@@user255 If the buttons didn't move around and the number combinations stayed the same, your point would be valid. But those aren't the case. It would be impractical to try to bypass this lock by clicking buttons randomly, because you can't tell when you've already tried the pattern that the lock presents you with. And mixing up both the button positions and which numbers are on any given button, it's not feasible to try to spy on someone entering the combination. Even if you can read the buttons, you still have a lot of possibilities to try out, and if you can't, well...seeing the positions won't help at all.

Example when you push button which has numbers 1, 2 and 3. Then you have started to input *all* codes that begins either with 1, 2 or 3. The math I presented holds.

I got one of these locks specifically because of the changing key pad. However, after a year, the pad kept giving a fail beep, even during the night when no-one was around - this also wore the batteries out. After numerous emails with customer care I was told that the unit had failed. Oh, and that they couldn't replace it as I was outside of the US. Basically, when it fails it turns into a normal lock, but when you don't carry a key because you don't need to, then you're locked out. So, you then have to make sure there is a key safe just in case. This now means that the key safe is the weakest point making this moot. Basically, this is not reliable enough to be used normally. At least add a constant power hook up or solar cell to make sure it's always charged!

I have this lock and most of it is really nice and feature rich. The only flaw I've had with it, is somehow rain and or humidity will get inside the electronics part (interior section) of the lock itself. I've had to replace it 4 times in 3 or 4 years. I'm not sure how or why it's happening. But opening the battery pack, after about a year, will show mold and galvanic corrosion. As well as inside the interior section of the housing where motherboard is. If I could find a solution to this, it would be a 9 out of 10. But I can't recommend buying it until this solved by the manufacturer.

The issue with that randomized code is that if you can observe a few attempts then you can deduce the full sequence by elimination, it's useful only for single view but a simple camera will pick it up after 4 successful entry...

Why don't smart lock makers not just implement a time limit for key insertion to prevent piccing? Like a 1-3 second limit. If an object is inside for more than that time without an unlock it needs to be removed before you can retry. You could also put a 30 second delay on so you'll have to wait before key reentry.

Because the key is generally intended to be a mechanical bypass. If the lock loses power or it's firmware bugs out, the owner needs a way to open their door. Implementing an electronic time lock out could risk compromising this backup.

So the activation of the lockout is electronical with like a small magnet that needs power and thus mechanically defaults back to no lockout. The next logical step could be to make the entire lockout mechanism mechanical. That could be possible with Springs and stuff which we already use in kitchen timers etc. No?

The other benefit is that even if someone watches you put in the code up close, each press has the potential to be one of three different numbers, so they wouldn't be able to guess what it could be. Since each circle counts for all the numbers inside.

not too hard for lpl in his lab = nearly impossible for at least 3/4 of pickers when placed in a door. I'd say this lock was honestly pretty impressive, and if you really need the core to be better you can swap it yourself, which serious people might do just on principle anyway. Every lock can be picked with enough know-how, specialized tools and experience. Think of it this way - a lock is usually designed to be unlocked by a non-destructive method. The goal of a lockpicker is to imitate that method using tools or other tricks (shaking something open, for example). The LPL is an absolute master of his craft. I'm talking top 1% of lockpickers. Your average burglar or bike thief is more likely to opt for a destructive method. If you want a good lock, look for the ones that are well-protected against physical attacks (cutting etc) or require specialized tools to open

I'm sure there isn't a lock on the market that won't be. You have to remember, LPL has been at this for years and years. Yes there are also MANY more that are just as skilled. As he stated get a lock with a standard format, so you can always aim to get something with this, this try to put more security pins to take a bit more time, but in the end, if they want something in your house, sadly they will get it :( Pair locks with zone cameras to see the porch, the area around it, and a super wide as well. Or at the very least a camera at the door to catch anyone trying to break in to get their mug shot for the authorities.

@@Vortechtral If you're as good at lock picking as LPL and you have a similar toolset, you're less likely to want to break into homes to burglarise them, as you can make quite a bit of money as a call-out locksmith, so you don't need to resort to crime for money. The kind of crime that someone of LPL's skill would commit would be corporate / government / military / drug gang related, where the stakes are much higher.
