{Izlude and Alma on a Chocobo, Wiegraf crawling at his side injured and a trail of blood behind him}
Izlude: Are you OK? Wiegraf!!
Wiegraf: Don't worry...about me...Just...go!
{Ramza exits the monastery}
Ramza: Alma!!
Wiegraf: Go....Izlude....
Izlude: Sorry, Wiegraf!!
Ramza: Wait! Izlude!!
Wiegraf: Goho! Damn....I can't die here. I can't face my dead allies without avenging Miluda...No....I don't want to die...
{Wiegraf drops the Aries stone, the stone lights up and levitates}
Aries: Holder of the Holy Stone...Promise me....
Ramza: What....? The stone....spoke...?
Aries: Holder of the Holy Stone...Promise me....Your spirit will unite with my flesh to live forever.
Wiegraf: This is the stone's secret?
Your despair and resentment called me...now promise...
{Next two lines in unison}
Ramza: No! Wiegraf!! Don't open that!!
Wiegraf: Help.....me......
{The stone flashes, goes to Wiegraf}
Aries: I am Velius...the devil. Your wish is granted.
{Wiegraf changes into the devil}
Velius: This is the stone's power!
Ramza: Wiegraf......!
Velius: Ramza, its power is magnificent! No, not just the power. Centuries of knowledge ingrained into my brain.
{Ramza draws his sword}
Velius: Hya, ha...easy...save some for later...! Hya, ha...superb...Superb power........!
{Velius disappears}
{Simon, injured, exits the monastery}
Ramza {holding onto Simon}: Simon! Can you hear me...?
Simon: H, here...
Ramza: What is this book?
Simon: Germonik, a disciple of St. Ajora wrote it...It has been missing...till I found it in the underground library....It explains in detail about the Zodiac Brave Story...
Ramza: Please don't try to talk!
Simon: That's all right.....I'm a sinner...I knew of the church's wrongdoing...but said nothing...You can bring them to justice with this book! You can bring Alma back with this book...
Ramza: Simon!!
Simon: Whew, now I can finally rest. Take care of the rest...Ramza...You're just like Balbanes...when he was young.
{Simon dies}

Just watching this scene again gives me the chills. And I'm sure *many* players got the opportunity to watch it twice after Wiegraf took the liberty of purging their save file.

Dude, that fight has a recommended level of 65. Altima has a recommended level of 45. This is dead center in the game. That's a hell of a difficulty spike.

@@Ujiyo Oh no, I didn't have my Ramza cast, I had one of the default characters from the start of game cast meteor and she got mostly ignored long enough to nuke. Does it seem like at least Wiegraf's AI targets Ramza to you? I mean, it'd make sense thematically anyway if he does

Exactly . This stone spoke and turned into a goddamn four armed goat devil monster sorcerer and ramza wanted all the smoke . He immediately draws his blade and is ready to fight to the death. That kind of courage is not taught . Ramza is truly a hero with a lions heart . Most people would run screaming . And what’s more velius buys it. He was NOT about to catch a fade from ramza so he teleported the hell out of there lol

When the stone grants Wiegraf's request, and then tells him, "I am Velius, the *Devil* " sent chills down my spine as a kid.... It was like the stone was telling him just what he had gotten himself into & there is no turning back.

Same! The PS1 translation had many problems, but it certainly has a lot of good moments. WotL throws some poetic fluff at this part and it just doesn't convey the evil it represents nearly as well.

Easily the most threatening thing ever said in a Final Fantasy ever. Kafka may have destroyed the world. Ultamecia may have compressed time. Sephiroth may have thought himself some great evil, but none of them, not a one ever claimed to be the devil. Velius fucking did. "I am Velius, the Devil." Bruh what?!

What I love most about this scene is how you can't fault Wiegraf at all in this situation. It's the worst decision you could possibly make and yet, here's a man, who has lost everything to an unfair world, he's bleeding out on death's door, with so much left to accomplish...

He's the same as Ramza and Delita in many ways, each of them took a different path to deal with an awful world, but Wiegraf lost himself entirely in the process.

Quite deep. A softlock and a whole new gameplay level of deep, because your party wont be nearly as prepared to face this thing on your first playthrough and you saved on the same file. Velius was beyond brutal, but a fine test of skill no less.

Worst yet, is even if you're able to beat him at that point, the next battle is probably the most BS one in the entire game (the one you can't let them kill Rafa), I really had to grind for that one

Velius is one of the few bosses in video games that I'm genuinely afraid to fight. He isn't just difficult. He's legendary in all of video game history.

The poetic dialogue takes so much from it. "The Gigas Belias have I been named" doesn't convey nearly the same horror as "I am Velius, the devil." Yeah, the old translation is very flawed and crude around the edges and has a lot of lines that make no sense, but this was the moment you knew exactly how bad things were.

It's kinda funny how people who never got far in this game assume Wiegraf is some sort of rival for Ramza, or even all that relevant to the story. He's kinda just some low level criminal who gets his ass whooped and worn as a skin suit by one of the actual antagonists of the game.

You're right but early on there are strong reasons to believe Weigraf is Ramza's foil rather than Delita as we eventually discover. I consider that the sign of great writing & excellent planning by the people in charge of the game because I never could have predicted those events, yet they make perfect sense in context.
