I'm sorry for your loss, Peter. My Dad passed away last year, and I know it can be difficult. Thank you for a very interesting video, though. I am considering having some major structural work done to my mid-terrace Edwardian property (and possibly doing some of the work myself, which will give me an excuse to buy new tools...) I have concerns about how on earth to get rid of all of the building rubble and waste, so this was a timely and useful video. It's also inspiring to see what your finished kitchen looks like.

Staggering skip permit prices in London! When I looked into it down here in Devon it was £60 and parking round me is probably just as limited. Looks like it has been worth the upheaval though!

Sorry for the loss of your father, Peter, particularly without warning. We were fortunate to all be with ours at the end, so sad when people are denied the chance. Relatives advise (nag) me to hire in for some jobs because DIY progress can be glacial at times, but here is the reality. You still have to commit time that we can't really spare, meeting someone else's schedule to boot, and costs are blood-curdling. In particular I keep hearing "just get a skip" when there's a lot to dispose of but, also living in London, the permit alone costs hundreds! A van, even with a driver, is a fraction of the price and more flexible.
@10MinuteWorkshop5 ай бұрын
Thank you. And yes, the cost of the actual waste management is relatively modest compared to the cost of the permits! Crazy! 🤷♂️

Oh my gawd! I'm back to thinking it would have been cheaper to move! :^D OK, a bit like closing the barn door after the horses have fled but a youtuber "Matt Risinger", a Texas construction contractor, has some great video's on home building. In latest one, he and another youtuber contractor visit a site in Norway. Lot's of great ideas (probably in conflict with mine and yours building codes) and at our age we can't really look forward to "the next time we remodel" but I find them interesting anyway. Looks like your local contractors have those very thorny problems with your old homes fairly sorted. At least you're not pulling a colinfurze project. LOL (I'm starting to think surviving your remodel was a minor miracle on your part)

Hi, I was horrified to find out the price of skips in my area until I watched your latest video on your house build. I felt as if I had been ripped off when I was charged £160 per skip. As I have a front garden, I got the skips on my land and did not have to give the council any money at all (that would have been very irritating for me). I live in the north of England and have always liked it here but now I have another reason to like living here.
@10MinuteWorkshop5 ай бұрын
I’ve actually seen garden walls being demolished just to get a skip off the road - and tbh with ~£12K saved over the cost of an ordinary build, then rebuilding a front garden wall is trivial! What really bugs me is the assumption by the local authority that parking space will be 100% occupied over the period - and not by my car, that parks for ‘only’ £200/ year. 🤷♂️👍
@npet68425 ай бұрын
Do I see two smoke detectors on the kitchen ceiling Peter ? Factoring in the money spent ( and therefore your selling price has gone up ) would the build undertaken shorten the time necessary to sell your home now that it's been enlargened and refreshed ? I ask as such , as it is hit and miss here depending upon whether there's land available for new builds or one has to renovate a house where there's no land available .
@10MinuteWorkshop5 ай бұрын
One’s a standard smoke, and one’s a CO2, and they’re all interlinked throughout the house. It’ll be a while before we get to find out, but yes, we expect the work we’ve had done to make the house easier to move on, when the time comes - though it’s always a roll of the dice as to wether buyers want something complete and ready to move into or a fixer-upper. 🤷♂️👍
