Mappa - Ever thought of buying a twin electric blanket to use to warm up the wood? Might take a bit more prep afterwards but you might be able to get the wood a good bit warmer.

This might be a good idea until you have to deal with the lint/dust/dirt left behind by the electric blankets, especially after they have been used for a while. The cleaning process would need to be quite rigorous. I would recommend buying heated rubber mats that are used in many industries for heating items. The rubber mats won't leave behind dust/dirt/lint and are easily cleaned if they become dirty and some offer temperature controls which would give you better process control to heat a thick slab.

It might be possible to save a pour that is overheating a little by using the tubing to cool the pour, or at least know when you are getting too close to the limit on exotherm...

So I have been binge watching these epoxy resin tables as I’m hooked. What I’m seeing other wood craftsman do is fill the pits and cracks with epoxy and there are different types of epoxy…as I’m sure you know. The epoxy I’m talking about is called Deep Penetrating Epoxy that soaks into the grain of the wood and then they do their sanding before the table top epoxy finish.

I’m 36 and I’ve been an automotive painter for 16 years in a fairly high flow shop. The trizac system works extremely well. I’ve seen the paper go up as high as p5000 grit. Once you’re at that point, the buffing and polishing portion is ridiculously easy. I absolutely love this table. Keep up the amazing work dude

Mappa 13:55 The best way to heat the surface of your slab (and the epoxy on the slab) is to use a radiant heat panel. A 400 Watt panel should do your application (24"x 24"). You would suspend it directly above your slab (3 or 4 feet above). Plugs into 120VAC. No moving parts so no air movement. Home Despot $250 Love the table.

I refinish furniture and my buffing to a high gloss needed work when I first started. I have learned a little trick though. Set up a couple of shop lights at waist height or about chair rail height with them facing out and turn your overhead lights off. It is what a lot of automotive painters do and it gives an excellent contrast on the levelness and shows any dips, debris that might have landed on it and swirls from the pads.

This and be sure you can see the light itself in the reflection. That really brings out the imperfections. Another tip is use LED’s and not fluorescent or halogen. It’s a “cleaner” light that again helps to see those imperfections.

When this table was around 1500 grit sanded, I loved it. But the final shine is unbelievable. I don't even like glossy finish in general, but this job is really nice ;)

Buffing doesn’t always come out that nice. It might sound crazy, but i have some sanding discs from rocker that go down to 12000 grit which I use before I start buffing guitars out and it helps get rid of that haze so you don’t have to go through a ton of buffing compounds. Those things are super expensive!

@@thedillydotcom I mostly work with car finishes. Once you get above 2-3K grit sanding, compounds will work just fine. IMO it depends on what you are better at sanding vs buffing. Also the risk of overheating the clear with the buffing compounds. I'm like you and lean to a better final sanded surface vs cutting it with compounds.

I would love to see a test video for the ceramic coating. maybe make two little cutting board sized chunks of wood, finished with epoxy, and one has the ceramic coating on, while the other doesnt. after a couple tests, I'd like to see how well the ceramic coating actually protects the resin finish

@mikea hiooi get a dead tree from a storm, let it dry for a bit, take it to a woodyard willing to cut it into slabs for you, then dry them out further till they are not going to keep warping anymore Often after a storm, or when a tree is dying, people want the tree taken away, and some have to pay someone to do it. so talking to local farmers, council workers that do the landscaping, or contractors who maintain gardens and landscapes for other people/companies. they are bound to have a tree or stump they don't want. but it will take a bit of leg work, a bit of getting to know people, and setting up that repour , and really some luck as well. but of course, it means your putting time and patience into setting things up so people know your looking for it, and the running around, because you want to keep reminding them. but you might have to rent a trailer, and other tools, or hire someone who has them, so finding something free, may cost you more then just paying for it. but keep the local timberyards in your favourites, and spend time online keeping an eye on things, and visiting them, so again, they know who you are, and that your trying to save some money. a couple of years ago, [I am in Australia though] a friend found that there was a lot of wood from storms, and some power poles. that were basically on the side of the road, so anyone could come and use a chainsaw to trim the branches and load it on a trailer.
