Bowties are honest. They show tha a craftsman is aware of the fragility of a joint, and wants to show, honestly, how they have taken the problem into account! It will, of course, separate over time without the bow tie. There are some other methods to use, but this is both simple and elegant! Love the Ceramic coat too

Otherwise, if you aren't willing to accept the flaws (and by extension the need to stabilize them), then you pick a different board for your project. Simple. Also this type of work is dangerous. I have thousands of dollars worth of tools, but I don't have the tools that it takes to work with huge slabs. @@dereknapier836 I build furniture (including river tables) and you have a bit of a point, but keep in mind the amount of labor that Cam puts into his pieces that most other shops don't. He spends hours filling every crack and void and then even more hours meticulously sanding. He mortises in the legs and goes the extra mile to create a really spectacular piece. It's the difference between an actual artist and someone looking to make a buck. Also, you have to have a sort of consistent pricing model regardless of the slab's price. If the final result isn't too dissimilar to another piece (regardless of the slab prices) it doesn't make sense to charge 1/4 of the price since that'll just confuse customers perusing. Cam seems pretty transparent about his pricing model but doesn't have to be. If you put the table built out of a $250 slab next to the table built out of a $1500 slab you wouldn't notice the difference IMO.

Bow tie. My dad does professional Hawaiian bowl woodturning and the bow ties actually add value to the piece. It acknowledges there is a flaw in the timber and it has been addressed. For the uninitiated, the bow tie does take getting used to. I now find them to be aesthetically pleasing and really adds character and patina to the piece. This desk was exquisite. The figuring was similar to what you would find on higher end Koa pieces and matched by your skilled craftsmanship. Well done!

What I love about your videos, Cam, is that you have such a down to earth attitude about your work, even when handling tables that are being sold for over $10k. It helps the noobies, and probably also the more experienced woodworkers, among us feel more relaxed and less stressed about every micro-decision we have to take. Halfway through this particular video you talk about how you don't really know how much the bow ties really help, but it probably does, so you just make a decision confidently. It took me weeks of mental preparation to hang up a simple mirror because I didn't know if I had to use 6mm or 8mm screws/plugs. After weeks of dreading and postponing it, I finally set out to hang the damn mirror. Turns out I couldn't find my 6mm drill bit so I had no choice but use the 8mm one. In the end it didn't even matter, and the mirror is hanging just fine. All in all, your videos are very relaxing, entertaining and very educative. Thank you!

Bowtie! My father is a woodworker and has recently started turning his own bowls from cast offs, scraps, and such that he finds out and about on his walks. This table is gorgeous and the added ceramic is a must for something so pretty. I am going to pass that onto him for his future projects. Everyone has an opinion these days from the bow ties to the use of the metric system...they can all take a piss! Keep carving your own path and creating these masterpieces for your friends, family, and clients. Wonderful job!

The color and grain in that walnut is incredible, I can see why it fetches such a hefty price. I've been playing around with the idea of making bowties out of non-wood materials, mostly stone (granite, rose quartz, blue quartz) to give some high contrast and added interest. I work with various building materials and types of stone, and I have been thinking of ways to incorporate some of the more interesting stone into these pieces. edit: would have to install the stone in a location that won't need additional cuts or sanding. I'm not aware of any dual purpose material removal methods that work for stone + wood, unlike metal + wood.

I saw a guy on KZbin do a bronze bow tie that he cast and machined, it looked really hard to do but it popped. I liked the aged bronze or oiled color. The hardest part seemed to be getting it flattened perfectly with the table.

As someone who's been woodworking the majority of their life in Standard, and then learned Metric when I was doing it professionally, Metric is awesome for precision woodworking. Precision anything in fact. But like you said, there is absolutely no way that change would come easy here in the States. I don't like the look of bow-ties, but in this projects they are actually kinda cool, because it looks like dams holding back reservoir water in a river. I also completely understand the necessity of them being inserted to hold the wood together, so it's not really a question of taste...unless you could make them just on the undersite so you don't "ruin" the surface of the tabletop. Anyways...I enjoy your videos a lot, keep it up mate! =)

Bowtie. If I may make a suggestion: why don't you create a second channel "Blacktail Studio ASMR" and upload a version of your videos with just the wood working sounds. So you export the video, right before you make the voice-over version. So people can have which one they like.

It's doable, though if if its doable enough is up to him, but it isn't as easy as exporting it before doing the voice over. He still has to do (and redo) all the audio mixing, note how there isn't any audio in the voice over other than the voiceover. He also probably has to completely re-edit the video as there will be bits that the ambient audio isn't good enough (eg bad recording, uninteresting, uncomfortable etc) and to have the flow work without a voiceover. So while it not be a doubling of work to create an ASMR version it is going to be a significant increase in work, and he will have to judge if it's worth it.

Bow Tie, all day every day for cracks or even as an inlay. Personally I like the contrast in colors between purple heart and a lighter wood, like curly maple.

First of all: what a fantastic looking table! Wow! Second: don't worry so much about all the trolls. You'll drive yourself crazy accommodating the commenters in your videos. This is your channel and your shop, make the pieces and the youtube content you want. Who cares what the viewers think? You're using youtube to document your passion. Don't let the trolls influence your passion or or decision making in your process. Your work in the shop speaks for itself. It's like a real life Field of Dreams kind of thing here. Focus on the build. Cheers.

Bow tie/no tie...love the ingenuity of the ties & totally get them as under-side reinforcements, but I wouldn't want to see them on the surface of a $10k desk...love (LOVE) your work. Have you done much w/ Myrtle wood before? I lived on the Oregon coast near Coos Bay for 6 years as a kid & was always enamored by the woodworking guys did with that species. Cheers.

That’s an awesome desk as far as the bow ties go they look really good I think. Especially being a wood worker myself you have to ensure the quality of what you made. That crack definitely needed more structure added to it if that tables going to last. A true craftsman needs to make these kinds of choices.

NoTie: The bow ties on the top seemed to detract from the beauty of the filled crack. I think you should have added the bowties on the bottom for structure but left the top just the epoxied crack.

yes! or if you really must use them on top, recess them and do it before the epoxy fill, then carve out the "proud" potion to look natural so when you fill with epoxy you have no idea there is structure beneath it. Also, if you go that route you can use thinner metal joints with epoxy on top.

Bow tie - Cam - that looks absolutely incredible. Keep up the good work! I absolutely love the contrasting bow tie look. Wood is naturally imperfect and I like to see the craftsmanship to put those extra tweaks into it that make it look like you went the extra mile to make sure it will last forever.

Bowtie... Please, don't ever listen to any of the negative comments about the format of your channel. Silent wood working channels are a dime a dozen, but there are only a few that have commentary, and even fewer that are as high quality as your channel. I'm subscribed to quite a few woodworking, fabricating, hobbyist, craftsmanship, etc., type channels, however, your channel is literally the only one that I have notifications turned on for. I look forward to every new Blacktail Studio video because I like WATCHING the tables and LISTEN to the process. The best part is that you can almost guarantee that the people who said they would be unsubscribing, will continue to watch every single video you post. People like that just love making empty threats. Just keep the great, high quality content coming!

No tie. I think it distracts from the visual flow. However, if the customer is cool with them, then that’s all that matters. As far as not talking versus talking, throwing both sides a curveball by singing your script the next video. You choose the music.

I feel the the same way about the bow ties as I feel about wooden plugs. As long as the grain of the plug or bow tie is opposite the surrounding wood and made to look intentional, they look great!
