My grandad was a double for Tyrone Power (Nightmare Alley) in the film Run Silent Run Deep. He was onset as a naval consultant being a lieutenant commander of a submarine fleet, whose best friend was the real life protagonist of the movie. Because he looked so much like Tyrone they asked him to be a double. It’s the only time I actually get to see my grandad watching that movie and seeing the back of his head because he died in 1964 and I was born in 1992.

that is a fantastic story, Ty Power is sadly so forgotten now, but NIghtmare Alley he really gave a great performance. As he also did in Jessie James, and Zorro, where he swashed and buckled with Basil Rathbone. So great to hear about someone who was actually Ty's double and was part of that long forgotten era.

Not sure if you ever get around to reading these things, but I just wanted to thank you for your very high-energy film reviews (in general) and the movies on this haul in particular, as it has brought a couple films to my attention I , otherwise, might never have thought about getting. Namely THIEF and THEY LIVE BY NIGHT. It IS great when a blind buy leads to a cool discovery! I've spent so much of my life working on "effects-y" movies (and having to spend lot of time viewing them in my line of work) that it is so very rewarding to watch dramas, screwball comedies and subtle films like those of Val Lewton, none of which have big effects and over-the-top e-ticket-based films where character depth is not the first thing that the makers had in mind/focused on. .So reviews of hauls like this are always welcomed especially when delivered with enthusiasm and so much genuine love for the work that you generate. Thanks so much.

@@cobwebschannel I blame critics. They are extremely biased in favor of modern over classic. Very 70s-centric, obsessed with bleakness, transgression, and social critique.

Other greats " The Gunfighter ", " Freaks ", ..yes " The Lady Eve ", and the Val Lewton release is a must on my buy list. I have both on older DVD releases.

Great list and real enthusiasm for some true gems. I’d strongly recommend Moonrise, for an atmospheric, moody and felt noir. Bitter Rice for some Italian crime neorealism, but pulpy too, one I struggle to categorize but adore. The Breaking Point, a great noir by Casablanca director Curtiz, with John Garfield in great form. Three Criterions that easily sit beside your fantastic picks.

If you are a horror fan, and you haven't seen Nobuhiko Obayashi's House, you need to get right on that. Criterion's release provides a lot of background, criticism and interpretation of a film that is simultaneously fanciful and impenetrable in turns.

If They Live By Night is your favorite Film Noir, then you have to check out Robert Altman’s “remake” of the same source material (Edward Anderson’s novel), Thieves Like Us (1974). It’s a very New Hollywood take on the story and leans heavily into the Great Depression setting while still focusing on Bowie and Keechie’s doomed relationship. It’s also from Altman’s classic period and easily stands with his highly rated films from that era (McCabe & Mrs. Miller, The Long Goodbye, Images, Nashville, and Three Women). Vinegar Syndrome’s partner label Cinématographe recently released a gorgeous 4K/Blu-ray edition that I highly recommend.

I also recommend Written on the Wind and Imitation of Life. Also directed by Douglas Sirk. Another one similar to those(not from Sirk) is Leave Her to Heaven, also in the Criterion Collection. Here's a few heavily influenced by Douglas Sirk. Far From Heaven (2002) A Single Man (2009) Carol (2015) Nocturnal Animals (2016)

I Walked with a Zombie is darn-near perfect. Seventh Victim is what I will dub Emo-noire. Buck and the Preacher is a masterpiece. Freaks subverts post WW1 horror tropes by making deformed people the humans and the "beauty" is the monster. Great pics, dude 10/10 fricheks

If you like Anatomy of a Murder you might really enjoy Witness For The Prosecution. It's a lighter movie with a comedic touch and very entertaining. Directed by Billy Wilder. One of my favorite movies is The Three Musketeers 1973. It's actually the first part of a two part story. The second is The Four Musketeers 1974. Often they are sold together. The Court Jester is a great sort of screwball comedy. It contains some classic quotable lines. It also has some excellent fencing scenes as well. The Caine Mutiny is a good character study movie starring Humphrey Bogart. I don't know if it's a Criterion Collection though. There are swaths of well deserving movies not in the Criterion Collection.

I've seen the majority of these. Some solid picks, while others I was so bored by, I know I've watched them but have no memory of the actual content (Seventh Victim, Lady Eve, Anatomy of a Murder). By far and away the best ones you mentioned were Seconds, Valery and Her Week of Wonders and All That Heaven Allows. 👏 I'm literally watching Something Wild as I type this - it's alright but predictable and by-the-numbers; I was actually surprisingly enjoying it for the first half hour, but then it goes on way to long given how formulaic it all is.

I think you buried the led with regard to In a Lonely Place: Gloria Grahame was Dixon Steele's neighbor and his alibi. My favorite part of Seconds may be when Jeff Corey is making his sales pitch to John Randolph while eating sandwiches. I may have to check out the Freaks Blu-ray for the two accompanying features.

What a great time to be making a Christmas list. I wouldn't buy "Freaks" any other way but Criterion. "Thief" is in many ways the best advertising for the Colt 1911 pistol, and a Master Class in acting by James Caan. If you're looking to buy for Dad or Grand Dad James Caan movies can't be wrong.

I love Something Wild! I'm pretty sure I watched it because Paul Thomas Anderson said it's his all time favorite movie. He's a filmmaker who I'm not as into as I used to be but I still try to track down movies he talks about. Doing some press after the release of Phantom Thread, he mentioned The Passionate Friends as being an influence and that might be my favorite David Lean movie now. Hoping it gets a criterion release at some point. The criterion title I've been recommending the most recently is Marketa Lazarova. It's a Czech film from 1967 and the tagline is: Putting the "dark" back in the dark ages. It's not a horror movie but I wouldn't be surprised if Robert Eggars is a big fan. I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on it.

x Watched The Awakening, great movie! o I watched the movie right after it was released, which I had anticipated for a long time before, through Interlibrary Loan. o Rebecca Hall is fantastic as ghost hunter Florence Cathcart! o The board school and estate are absolutely perfect for the movie! o I thought the props for the ghost hunting tools are fantastic, very classic and effective! o The scheir idea of there being a figurine model of the boarding school they are in and its inside the school! † That was an incredible spooky scene! o Apparently, like Florence Cathcart, I also repressed the ending...what a total shocker! o They totally need to make a sequel for that! x On 12/10 for my Haunted House Movie Marathon (in this order): 1.) The Haunted Mansion 2.) Burnt Offerings 3.) The Changeling 4.) The Uninvited 5.) Casper x On 12/17 for my Hoop Dreams Movie Marathon (in this order): 1.) Hoop Dreams 2.) Basketball Diaries 3.) Hoosiers 4.) Blue Chips 5.) Celtic Pride x To my April Watchlist, I added: o The Lady Eve + Something Wild (as a Double Feature) o Thief + They Live by Night for a Crime Movie Marathon (which I haven't created yet).
