I worked at the Switch Data Centers here in Vegas for 4 years, as I live down the street from them. These facilities are crucial from customers like; Disney, Qualcomm, eBay, Pay Pal, and hundreds more. Also, they wont stop expanding as the CEO keeps buying up land and building more Super Naps in the SW area of Vegas. Lastly, I do not miss working in the data center environment at all.

I worked for 34 years for the Los Angeles DWP in electricity generating stations. One thing I noticed is the massive electricity consumption used by these huge data centers. Some of these data centers have electricity consumption around 180 megawatts. At Scattergood Generating Station units 1 and 2 could put 185 megawatts each at full load. This is a huge amount of electricity. It sounds like building huge data centers also requires building facilities to generate the electricity for these data centers. Also although this video mentions the use of solar power for these data centers. Solar Power is not the only source of power. The electricity has to also come from other sources, such as generating stations that burn natural gas or fuel oil to power these data centers.

Data centers are large facilities that house a network of servers, storage devices, networking equipment, and other technology infrastructure to store, process, and distribute data. They are essential for companies and organizations to store and manage their digital information securely. These data centers are often used to support cloud computing services, which allow users to access applications, services, and data remotely over the internet. Data centers play a crucial role in enabling the digital services we use every day, from email and social media to streaming video and online shopping. The size and scale of data centers have grown significantly in recent years with the increasing demand for digital services and the explosion of data generated by individuals and businesses. The largest data centers in the world are massive facilities that can span millions of square feet and consume vast amounts of energy to operate. In today's digital age, data centers are the backbone of our interconnected world, enabling the storage, processing, and distribution of data that powers our daily lives.

They are there for critics to believe they put a dent in power consumption, how much power do you think these solar panels generate at night when most computers perform updates and database refreshes? A company I work for wanted to build 18 data centers in an adjacent county, they rejected proposals until we agreed to put solar panels on the roofs. These panels will supply less than 5% of DC power when they’re active in ideal conditions. That’s AI research for you, dumbed town 😒
