What I don't get and maybe someone could explain it to me is how pro boxers like Mayweather didn't take gold but do do really well outside of the Olympics or vice versa?

Amateur boxing consists of three rounds and is usually fought at a much higher pace, prioritizing speed over power. In contrast, professional boxing has more rounds and is fought at a slower pace. The scoring systems differ as well, with amateur boxing focusing on the number of clean punches landed. While professional boxing is considered more about getting the knockout while judging can be more subjective with factors like aggression and ring control being more considered. In my opinion, amateur boxing often favors more aggressive, Eastern styles compared to the counter-punching styles commonly seen in American boxing. However, this isn’t always the case. E.g. Some Cubans you get very good defensive amateurs who win fights from defense and counter punching alone.
