In its day, the freak shows often provided these people with a good paying job that they'd otherwise have to live in poverty and subjected to hostile conditions. Some of these people earned a small fortune. Today, it's viewed as exploitation of disabled or physically different people and are sometimes placed in 'institutions' with little to no opportunity. That's what is sad. In countries like India, such individuals are often revered, held in high esteem, and considered to be the embodiment of various gods or deities.
