My memories are of the 'heart-attack approach' into the old Kai Tak. Never thought a 747 could bank that far over, looking into the hold of a fishing boat from a passenger seat and waving to a lady on her balconey! Had a crabbed landing at Bristol, clear view down the whole length of the runway, bounced twice but otherwise good. Dad flew B-24's in and out of various Bluie West/Bluie East runways for several years (many, many times) during the early '40s. I think it was turn left up the fjord for a cliff or right for a runway then a cliff.

I heard that one of those short runway mountain airports have an additional factor: you can't take off from your original airport without authorization from the mountain airport. It's to verify that there is parking space or another plane isn't taking off and will be in the same mountain pass.

I'm a lot older now, but wanted to become a private plane pilot. I did not succeed however I remember the instructor saying one thing over and over. 98% of all plane crashes are pilot error. I did go on joy rides and it's like being in a car with wings. One other thing I would say is, flying is easy. Is the taking off and landing that is difficult and this video definitely shows why.

I like how you talk about landing at McMurdo Station and then you show a video of Scott Base. They also no longer land on sea ice, it is all on semi permanent ice shelf now. And the Pegasus flight that crashed there didn't sink into the ocean, it is still there on the ice shelf and McMurdo Station does tours out to it. After that it does feel a lot like landing on a normal runway.

Anna B. - In this case, "challenging" and "dangerous" are synonymous - if the "challenge" goes wrong, you are in a whole lot of pain and broken bones and death, so, yeah... A board-game might be "challenging" but not "dangerous"... But here we're talking about physical airplanes occupied by human beings approaching "challenging" runways at high speeds and contending with turbulence and surrounding mountains, etc., - and that is dangerous.

That airport where the planes go over the edge of a cliff reminds me of watching B-52s take off for South East Asia from Guam. Loaded with a maximum load of bombs the would lift off and go over the edge of the 600 foot drop off and disappear from view below the cliff only to reappear about 10 miles out as they finally were able to climb high enough to be seen from the runway.

As a pilot, you might want to include the short runway on Lord Howe Island off the east coast of Australia. smaller Planes only have enough fuel to turn back half way to it or are committed to landing and the winds from the nearby peaks can make weather conditions very dicy.

I'm surprised the Reno/Lake Tahoe Airport didn't make this list - it's surrounded by mountains at times blanketed with snow, has very bad cross winds, and the landing strips are around 4,500 feet long. Yet, they still allow large airplanes (like the 767) to land there at any time of the day.

No object to show water gravitationally held on a globe configuration in 700 years. NASA men and women and other government officials are liers, fake, phonies, etc.

@@admindude2728 like gravity holding water gravitationally on a globe configuration. Now that's fake more importantly impossible. That's truly, misleading. It's a learned behavior started a long time ago.

Great compilation! However, the St Barts airport was left out😐

Twin Otter pilots are amazing. They can stick a landing pretty much anywhere. Otters regularly land on river gravel bars in the NWT

Agreed. Unfortunately while the cockpit view shot on the last airport is from a Twin Otter, the aircraft shown landing is a Britten Norman Islander.

These are dangerous airports an if a plane slows down enough and overruns the runway and cant ganther enough speed to take back off then in the wayer they go and most of these airports are surrounded by mountains so I love to see you try to land on an aircraft carrier without any way to slow down and see you plummet into the ocean

@Jim Bob it is, but it doesn't take a genius to know, aircraft carriers, short runways, and crosswinds are dangerous. This video was advertised as essentially containing video of 15 separate, dangerous landings, as in an engine on fire, landing gear that won't deploy etc, instead it's a mundane, boring, Captain obvious, collection, or CLICKBAIT GARBAGE, if you prefer.

"Dangerous landings" and "Dangerous airports" mean two different things. Did you know that, Top Fives?
