Your list is a good one, I bought a lot of those records back in the 70’s…it had to be difficult to pick just 15 because a lot of really good music was released in 1975. I feel the 70’s was chock full of great albums- you did a good job here with ‘75 and I’m gonna subscribe so I can see more…

A fine list, Tom. Admittedly, several were unknown to me, e.g., Hatfield and the North. And that’s what makes your list so special by introducing new bands to listeners like me who are still mining the past as well as today. Thanks for sharing!

A marvelous list, Tom, not a bummer in the bunch. Couldn't agree with you more about the sound and feel of recorded music from the 70's, my biggest beef with the 80's being that drum machine sound. Thanks for posting this my friend and FYI, Lennon not only played on Fame, he also co-wrote the tune with David.

Glad you cite "Hissing of Summer Lawns," Joni Mitchell's most underrated, adventurous and ambitious record at that point (made possible only by the commercial success of "Court & Spark" the previous year). This is where she really got into making vivid narrative movies in song -- sometimes even painting visual tableaux and tracing camera movements with her lyrics, as in the title tale ("She could see the valley barbecues from her window sill/See the blue pools in the squinting sun/Hear the hissing of summer lawns"), the flashback/dream sequence in "Harry's House/Centerpiece," "Shades of Scarlet Conquering" ("Out in the wind in crinolines/Chasing the ghosts of Gable and Flynn"), "The Jungle Line" ("Rousseau walks on trumpet paths"), "Edith and the Kingpin" ("Staring eye to eye/You know they dare not look away"), "The Boho Dance" ("The camera pans the cocktail hour/Behind a blind of potted palms/And finds a lady in a Paris dress/With runs in her nylons.")... Visual music, poetry, and storytelling -- she's always done it (back to "Ladies of the Canyon") but never more hauntingly. For me, the great Springsteen streak was from "The River" to "Nebraska." Never really got into the earlier arena rock anthems -- though I've seen him in cozy old theaters and giant stadiums and he manages like nobody else to make every show into something intimate and personal. I don't know how he does that.

I gave Show-Biz a close listen last week, and thanks to you, I'll plough through all their damn rock operas, gawd help me. What a year! Not as good as 1973, or the deluge of 1970-'71, but still a good year for the roses. Some huge LPs debuted that year, from Pink Floyd's epic Wish You Were Here, to Fleetwood Mac's emergence as the number one band in the world with its eponymous Fleetwood Mac, or, as some of us called it, Mick and John meet Buckingham Nicks and have a Platinum LP. Never mind that Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan, and Bob Welch had established the band with a long list of FM favorites, from Oh Well and Sentimental Lady, to Hypnotized and Bermuda Triangle. Bruce Springsteen burst onto the scene, his first two LPs causing a stir, but the hoopla accompanying Born to Run making him a superstar overnight. Not to be outdone, Queen lived up to their promise, with A Night at the Opera, and Bob Dylan came roaring back with his (last) album, Blood on the Tracks. Other bands, and artists, rose to the challenge, with McCartney releasing the powerful Venus and Mars, cementing his fame in perpetuity, Led Zeppelin releasing the titanic Physical Graffiti, and Steely Dan issuing their finest album, Katy Lied. ELO capitalized on the buzz created by El Dorado, giving us Face the Music, Supertramp delivering Crisis? What Crisis?, Bowie and Elton offering solid LPs, rounding out the Top 12. Sadly, the drop-off after those blockbusters was steep, as the music biz went to bare knuckles over sales. The lag-time between albums was growing, in part to give slower-performing albums a chance to find their audiences, but mostly because artists were paying more attention to every song, no longer filling an album with one or two singles, and a ton of filler. Ahh, ‘75 ! An exciting time for album releases and another legendary year of rock music from that decade. I was 13 at the time when Zeppelin came out with PG and that album really grabbed my attention as I’d finally woke up to their scene. Over the years it has become my favorite from those guys. But your list is monumental and has beckoned me to look into into the Hatfield and the North album. I’ve heard of them in the past but never acquired any of theirs. I have most of these, bought back when they came out, so no big argument here. I'd toss the Hatfield obscure record and put in FZ One Size Fits All, myself. One of the best zappa albums of them all and there were many good ones. Did see Bruce in a small theatre late 75 (Rochester NY) and maybe the best concert I ever saw although I saw him(them) again in a stadium a couple years later and that was no slouch of a good time either. Ditto with Fleetwood Mac, saw them late 75 as opener for Loggins and Messina (I know, hard to believe) and they stole the show. LM broke up shortly afterward.

Blood on the Tracks and Nighthawks are all-time faves, as is Katy Lied; always thought of Doctor Wu as a brilliant film short by William Burroughs...that tune presaged material on Aja. Some good picks there, but your Kinks albums just aren't that great, sorry. I would put the albums by Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and Steely Dan with my top picks, but then would add: Still Crazy After All These Years - Paul Simon One of These Nights - The Eagles Siren - Roxy Music Horses - Patti Smith Mothership Connection - Parliament Main Course - Bee Gees Face the Music - ELO The Basement Tapes - Bob Dylan and of course: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd and A Night at the Opera - Queen

Great list. The "carpenter's wife" in Tangled up in Blue is a reference to Laura Nyro. Andy Edwards, ex Robert Plant drummer and a lot more, prog and fusion guru will tell you that Hatfield of the North and Mahavishnu Orchestra are the best bands ever. His youtube channel is incredibly informative, stimulating and funny. He is also a jazz guru. My list would include Scented Gardens for the Blind by Dragon, New Zealand prog - the track Sunburst is one of my all time favourite songs.
