Absinthe is no longer illegal in the US and has not been since 2009. I served in my own bar for 5 years. However, its manufacturing is heavily regulated and restricted. The Abinthe one gets in the US is not identical to what is available in France. The same is true of Jagermeister, an other anise liquor that is available in the US.

you're right penny . . . they removed the original chemical "thujone" from most absinthe brands which is poisonous in large amounts

Yeah haggis is not illegal - animal lungs are prohibited from being sold commercially for human consumption but a lot of international meat markets sell haggis. And caviar is not illegal - beluga caviar is banned from importation because of the unsustainable harvesting practices but you can buy American beluga caviar. This is a lotttt of misinformation. Clickbait.

@@MP77USA I bring canned haggis from Scotland when I visit family. I always declare it and have never been told it is illegal. I do know they don’t allow it if it was fresh but, that goes for most places when it comes to any sort of meats. I personally hate the stuff but, my mom, who is originally from Scotland, loves it. Although, I’m told the real haggis far superior over the canned stuff. But, I wouldn’t know. Lol

just goes to show just how stupid and authoritarian the people who make our laws here are. Even after all this time and plenty of evidence that Absinthe is no different from any other alcohol, they just couldn't live without imposing regulations on the stuff even after making it legal again. Its nonsensical.

Another problem is that even if use is found for the rest of the shark, it’s still an unsustainable practice. Shark numbers are already in decline, their flesh is full of pollutants (including mercury) & not good to eat. Aside from the casual cruelty of shark fin hunting, it’s still wrong in many ways

Kinder eggs are sold in the US. The reason why they were able to sell the eggs were because they seperated the chocolate from the toy into two packets. Although if you didn't want the toy, the company makes a chocolate wafer/bar. 😋 I highly recommend it.

Sea bass sold at the store is not actually band anymore but it is under very strict regulations in regard to the number caught and in what area the size fish that are kept and the time of year that you're allowed to catch them. Unrelated but were you aware that salmon sold in the US is almost never actually salmon, it is usually a cheaper fish thats been infused with pink dye. The Beluga caviar in the US is not actually from the correct fish, it comes from breeds of fish that have been hybridized with the original fish from which beluga caviar came.

Haggis is like a giant piece of boudin, which is something you can get at nearly every gas station in south Louisiana. There is even something called boudin balls that is served at all Cajun restaurants that is the same thing as a link of boudin but without the innards casing, rolled into a ball, battered and fried, somewhat resembling a meaty hush puppy. I would bet the main difference would be one is much spicier than the other. Can you guess which one?

The casu marzu really is tasty if you like strong flavored cheese similar to blue cheese. The maggots are not any old fly larvae but of a specific species that infest some of the wheels of cheese. The interiors become rather soft and strong tasting, similar to a blue cheese. The interior is often mashed into a creamy consistency and eaten on bread. Really not as horrifying as they make out. Yeah the maggots get mashed as well.

As a member of the Scottish clan Donald (McDonnald) and belonging to the war house of McConnell. Trust me Haggis is illegal in the US for commercial manufacture, sale, or public consumption. Due to the fact it contains sheep lung and is encased in a sheep's stomach. Although it can still theoretically legally make it in your home for your own consumption; then there are the smugglers who bring it through Canada.

Caspian sturgeon tastes horrible. It’s super fishy, more so than lobster and crab. It’s edible but not exactly something you’d like to eat all the time. Plus certain times of the year they can cause ciguatera poisoning. I lived in Azerbaijan for a while and tried it, as well as the caviar. Not thrilling. Not to mention the sale of a lot of beluga caviar is actually controlled by certain mafia groups, especially in Dagestan. They’ve been known to actually bomb police barracks’ and shit. Ackee is delicious! It has to tree ripen - the pod must open on the tree so the seeds can be seen BEFORE you pick them. Most have 3 seeds and on occasion 4. You twist and pull out the seeds, then also the little orange membrane residue. Cut out any overly soft pieces from the yellow fruit. You can then blanch the remaining yellow fruit and freeze if you aren't ready to cook it yet. Fry it up with onions, garlic, thyme, salt. pepper, sweet peppers etc. Pairs well with salted cod which it is cooked down with. Eats great alone once seasoned up. Tastes nothing like egg though it looks like it. May have a faint bitter taste.

When I was in the Military Police and stationed in Germany about 42 years ago, I was at a fest. Which is basically like a Carnival. At least this one was. They have a few different types. Anyway, someone asked me if I wanted a burger. I said sure and they bought me one with fries. Of course they didn't say anything to me until after I ate it. Apparently it was horse meat burger. I was a bit grossed out when I found out, but it actually didn't taste too bad. It's lucky I was young at the time. Now even writing about the experience is making me queasy. Over there they don't think anything of it. They also have been known to mix ground pork with ground horse or ground beef. In Germany beef cattle are not as abundant as they are here in the states so they have to stretch it somehow. Honestly a beef and pork burger ground together is actually pretty good. It was one of my favorite burgers when I was over there. Pork is pretty abundant there. After the horse burger experience I always verified what kind of meat was being used, before I got a burger.
@atsukorichards1675
@atsukorichards1675 Жыл бұрын
I think you are right about mixing ground pork and beef. It makes the ground meat softer, juicier and more flavorful. In Japan, the mixed ground pork and beef is called "Ai-biki niku" (合挽き肉) and usually used in hamburgers, meatballs and so on. (By the way, we also eat raw horse meat as "Ba-sashi" (馬刺), thinly-sliced, very rare and expensive delicacy, only served at some specialized restaurants. )
@SeanHendy
@SeanHendy 10 ай бұрын
The consumption of horse meat in countries like Belgium, Germany, France etc has absolutely nothing to do with 'beef cattle not being as abundant...'. It is more simply that it is another protein source that is on the menu and there is a demand for it. Much like I can go into my local supermarket, or a local butcher, here in the UK and easily buy ostrich, venison, rabbit, duck, quail, pheasant, which might be a little more difficult in the US.

Yes and no. The Kinder eggs in the US are not the iconic eggs that originate in Europe but rather a different design created for the US market as US law states it bans candy with non-food objects inside due to being a choking hazard. By current law the item is banned from being brought from any country to the US and if found to be carrying them there is a hefty fine of $2500 per egg and a potential case of being refused entry, I have confirmed this before with border control and you can see it on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/importation-advisory-kinder-eggs.

Most of this stuff disgusts me, I'm always shocked at how sinister the food industries are and amazed at people who pay fortunes for this stuff whilst pretending the don't know where it comes from and how it's made. Gordon Ramsay did an expose on the shark fin industry, I cried most of the way through it, it's worth a watch but it it is sad and disturbing

When I was in Jamaica many years ago I tried turtle Octopus, and Conch. Conch and Octopus is tasteless and chewy. I have no desire to ever eat them again. The turtle was ok, but not good enough to make it part of my diet. The only one of the foods that were presented here that I have tried and liked is caviar. (not Beluga mind you) Caviar is actually pretty tasty, although most of the taste comes from the salt in it, (which is a lot). I avoid it now because of my Blood Pressure. One delicacy I love to eat when I can find it is Escargot. It's awesome in garlic butter sauce! It's legal but I thought I'd mention it. Oh, regulated Absinthe is available in the U.S. I have some in my liquor cabinet. It's too bitter for my taste but I keep it on hand for my more adventurous guests. I'll stick with my bourbon, rum and moonshine.

@@missg.5940 as for fire arms vs. Kinder eggs, I can see the difference, the U.S. is a very litigious society, anything that someone can sue for to make a quick payday, they will sue for, it's actually very unfortunate. You can ask nearly anyone in the U.S. how they could become rich and nearly 95% of the answers are going to be one of 3 possibilities, win the lottery, marry rich or win a big lawsuit. Firearms as well as A LOT of other things in the U.S. are so highly regulated that Law suits aren't as cut and dry as a child having the POTENTIAL to choke which is why Legos have a ton of legal writing on the package and in the instructions. It's also why places like Walmart, Lowes or any other big box retailer have VERY STRICT guidelines when dealing with spills or use of forklifts, so when you see a Lowes employee using a forklift and the entire aisle is not only blocked off but there's two more employees, one at each end of the aisle standing guard, you know why.
