Another Wilson masterpiece. Wilson, I know you are into NBA history as much as I am. Are you familiar with the old Zander Hollander handbooks, The Complete Book of Basketball 19xx? I used to get them for Christmas every year growing up, and I have been buying them up on Amazon the last few years. Year by year scouting reports on every single player as well as relevant storylines for the season going back to the early 70s. I love reading what people were saying about guys in the moment rather than 20/20 hindsight, who was supposed to be great but was a bust and vice versa. We have such similar tastes for the game I feel like you would love them as much as I do. Just found a near mint copy of 1983, learning so many new things about my beloved Celtics and how they were perceived as being on the way down going into 1984 and how DJ was not thought highly of at this point, but ended up winning the title and of course DJ was a major reason why.

Until this day, it completely baffles me why Detroit didn't pick Melo. He was a beast at every level prior to starting in league, legendary college career but they went for a highly risky pick with Darko which clearly never paid off. Yes they still won a championship but think of how many more they could of won with Melo and think how we would rank Melo in the all time rankings if he had 2-3 rings to go with his statistics?
@sammywoodstock4 жыл бұрын
If Detroit never won in 04', that would haunt Pistons fans forever because of how much of an impact player Melo would be. I don't think he would've won ROTY and his numbers would be down, but the Pistons would've been able to get over the ECF during the 00's and possibly delayed the endless Detroit rebuild.
@DanButton894 жыл бұрын
@@sammywoodstock I agree, his number would probably be half of what they were but if he played with such an great defensive team with a winning culture he could of been where Lebron is today, we maybe talking about Melo possibly taking the MVP this year instead of Lebron but instead, Melo is barely still in the league. Unless Melo made it clear to them that he wanted to be the star on the team which Detroit didn't want to happen that early on especially since they had a great unit I really can't see how they would of passed on him.

How? Carmelo led Lebron in points(only by .1 but still), rebounds, turnovers, FG%, 3PT%, and FT% all while playing more games and less minutes. While lebron led in assists, steals, and blocks. Carmelo also led his team to the playoffs in the western conference with a 43-39 record while lebron missed the playoffs and led his team to a 26 win improvement. Carmelo was also the first rookie to lead a playoff team in scoring since David robinson in 1989. Carmelo is also the only nba player to win rookie of the month every month in their rookie year and not win rookie of the year. It is very possible to build up an argument that carmelo should have won the award.
@elijahruderman4 жыл бұрын
@@coolman7626 I agree Carmelo deserved the ROY. But he still had a horrible 51% TS, and he had a way better team than LeBron had. Andre Miller was a borderline all star free agent that signed with the Nuggets in 2003, and Marcus Camby, who only played 29 games and shot a horrendous 41% from the field the season before in 21 mpg, was healthy in the '03 - '04 season and played 72 games and shot 49% from the field in 30 mpg. Carmelo was only the 3rd best player on his own team, as he ranked 4th in win shares and 3rd in VORP on the Nuggets in his rookie season. He was also a god awful defender, as his defensive box plus minus was a putrid minus 1.6, which ranked dead last on the Nuggets for anyone who played at least half of the season. Look, neither LeBron or Carmelo - or anybody in that rookie class - had a GREAT rookie year. And sure, Carmelo did deserve it over LeBron. But he shouldn't come anywhere close to this list.
