Thank you so very much for the primer on the prophets. I once worked on a massive Hohokam (pre-historic Native American) village in Phoenix, Az. It was located beneath a neighborhood in the middle of Phoenix. History can be found in the strangest of places.

@@HenryAbramsonPhD I am not a jew, but I have many friends that are jews, and they have helped me very much during the last 15 years, and so I got curious on these subjects. These videos are great to better understand my friends, and the biblical texts that are the basis of western culture. Congratulations Mr. Abramson for your work!!!

It's so refreshing to hear an Orthodox rav who discusses literary and historical details with such an open mind. If I had teachers like you in yeshiva, it would have saved me a lot of difficulty 😉 I had so many questions, only to find out later that rabbis like R Yaakov Emden an others had asked the same things centuries before, but their books are not encouraged in the "frum" world. Now, I've studied middle eastern history, can read many of the ancient scripts, and have a much clearer picture of what really happened back then.

The script reminds me of Gregorian chant-style notes particularly in the upper portions of the letters in the Raphael painting. Gregorian chant is a relative of the original early period synagogue music.

12:10 "Factual terms that we understand today" - surely such a phrase belongs in the pre-Twittersphere era and, even then, within a smaller circle of people and government than we remember. Oh for those days! An odd pattern being that the most literalist devotees of religion are often the most free with facts, data, and truth in the real world

Fascinating discovery from under a parking lot! A stamp "given of the king" indeed! I find it remarkable Josiah's zeal to reform came hearing directly from the Book as opposed to hearing from a prophet. Although both mediums were authorized by God, still the written Word is what incited real change! If only Jeremiah had a king like Josiah willing to listen to God's words rather than imitation prophets that God never sent!

Looks like there could be an entire historiography lesson on depictions of Hebrew text in artworks produced by non-Hebrew speakers... wondering if those artists did not know who to consult or if no one came forward to consult for fear of persecution, such were those times.

To find a seal of Natan Melekh the king's servant, (Nathan-melech the chamberlain NRSVCE 2 Kg. 23:11) (Nathanmelech the eunuch, who was in Pharurim (colonnades/the precincts) Vul. 4 Kg. 23:11), is absolutely finding a needle in a haystack, wow.

Bravo professor. Looking forward to the next one. I agree with you about disregarding the bible as a historical book. Most writing at that time were just grand claims of victories by Kings claiming to be a God. The biblical writings are definitely more. Where else will you find a historical source that includes defeats and suffering, not just the victories and prosperity.
@HenryAbramsonPhD

Glad you liked it. I'm not sure I agree with "disregarding the Bible as a historical book," would prefer something like "understanding that the principal intent of the Bible is religious rather than historical," but your point is well taken.

Isaiah 6:5-7 (NIV) [5] “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” [6] Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. [7] With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

I mentioned this to you a few times Professor about the 'they' or 'we', but now you double whammy yourself, as you use the anachronism of 'Jews', for the 'Ancient Israelites' or whatever the correct term is, but you don't do it for the purpose of saying 'we', think in Jewish schools where we teach kids about 'ancient Jews' the purpose is that they are us, not a they, so you double whammy yourself this time.

You have that right,to teach about only the Jewish people,But,they weren't the only people on the planet.Judah had 11 other Brothers 11,and when you add Benyamin,Then why only Him? Do you not care for the others? That they to languish,and are in deep Pain as being left out? Just wondering why.
