Starting is the biggest obstacle. I use a timer for 35 minutes to sculpt. There is a special mindset shift when you know the time involved and it becomes easier to say yes to. Ex. What if your friend asked you to help them move on Saturday vs. can you help me move for 1 hour on Saturday. The latter is an easier yes.

That part about 15 minutes turning turning into 30, turning into more is for real. I'm on the , "Draw a comic for at least 30 minutes a day" program and that 30 is hardly ever just 30. It usually balloons into at least an hour and sometimes way more. Just showing up can make such a difference. That said, still have huge imposter syndrome, still struggle everyday to get things just the right way. It's a battle.

Imposter syndrome is the worst. But if you finally realize ALL artists have it, all actors and famous people… and then just learn to quiet it down. I once had it so bad, at a party they were toasting me and i just went into panic mode. Like they would all find out I wasn’t a real artist. How ridiculous is that?! I was invited out to big parties and I just couldn’t force myself to do it. Joe! You’re one of the greatest cartoonists I know or have seen!

I don’t necessarily do a full drawing each day but I do a portrait sketch a week. So, I just take and break it down in chunks. Most of the time my new one starts on Wednesday and I do a bigger session on Sunday. Those 15 minutes the other days are relaxing because I know I’m not trying to finish that day. I’m just drawing but it does have an end goal each week.

I think what I would like to do is make a webtoon, nothing too ambitious but a simple adventure comic something like a Saturday morning cartoons.

Thank you for sharing this information! I think my issue is spending too much time studying other artists and their success. Watching this video has inspired me to focus on my success.

"and then you just don't draw." Oh so we're gonna just personally attack me like this?! 😂 February is the one month I manage consistency because I do Figuary - daily figure drawing for February. It's the only art challenges I've managed to finish but I'm on year 3 now and I learn something new every time. I think art challenges without specific prompts work best for me. I tried the Drawtober challenge last year and I got 1 out 😅 I've had that happen many years with various challenges but Figuary is the only one that has stuck for me so far. If anyone knows of similar challenges with that kind of broader focus, please let me know! It definitely keeps me accountable more than anything else has so far, so i'd love to find more.

Our Draw or Die prompts are narrative usually and open to interpretation. If I find something else I'll let you know!
