15 Minutes with Pia: You are Not Alone

Real talk guys. For the longest time, I never wanted to admit I was sad, out of fear that people would judge me or say that I’m being ungrateful. Kahit ako napapaisip, how can someone like me, who looks like they made their dream come true, still be depressed?
I did this talk recently and it was challenging to sum up everything about my mental health in 15 minutes. It’s my most honest sharing yet, and I wanted to be sure that if i spoke about it, it was coming from a place of strength and confidence. There’s no way I’m 100% okay now as it’s always a work in progress and everyday you just find healthier ways to cope.
After this, I would like to continue talking about mental health with you. I’ve started to equip myself with the right people around me to make sure that whatever I share is helpful. Thank you to MUO, LoveYourself & all my close friends who knew and who saw. 💙

In 2015 it was through you I got to know that there was a miss universe contest, to put that aside, when I hear you speak back in the day, I thought to myself there are people like you who are so kind and elegant in every way, I was thrilled to see you win and ever since you had a special place in my life. This year, I became top 1 of the dean's list. I published my first book. I ran my own business. But in the bed my mother recently I had an aneurysm in, I imagined myself wasting away. Seriously, I don't know how to love Pia more. I have loved and looked up to her so much since the MU2015 event, and even up to these days! The last time she visited Bangkok to be a guest speaker at a Miss Universe Thailand event, I saw her in real life, and she looked flawless! So stunning beautiful. I was trying to take a selfie of myself with her from afar, and she looked back at my phone camera too-one of the best days of my life! Even though I'm Thai, I'm so proud of Pia (and Catriona and the other contestants from PH) because these queens are so inspiring in their own ways. I started going to therapy in the states and I'm so thankful my therapist is a pinay (who can understand my problems and upbringing from a cultural perspective). it is mind blowing that there are only 800 in the Philippines, i am hoping there will be more. thank yu for sharing your experiences and advocating for mental health!

Great you are going to therapy. Takes courage. I’m not surprised either the small number of therapists In PI. Thou I believe it will grow. Going to therapy and discussing mental health issues may still be a cultural stigma in many parts of Asia, it’s so needed. I’m in graduate school pursuing to be a therapist with emphasis in mental health disorders and specializing in anxiety, depression and trauma. The first step is recognizing there is a problem and getting help. Important to realize that no one is perfect on earth. I wish you the best In your healing journey.
