As one of your viewers mentioned, Opinel offers shaving sharp knives from France at very reasonable cost. I use their garden knife in my lunch bag to slice tomatoes. Their kitchen utility knives are scary sharp!

the kershaw crown can be flixed open but its not good for it. thats why they put slick studs on it. When i flicked mine open its liner got stuck to the point i had to push very very hard.

Just before I watched this video I was at Meijer and picked up an Outdoor Edge Grip Blaze for $16. Doesn't quite squeak into the scope of the vid but at first fondling it seems to be good quality for the price. AUS-8, lockback, great jimping, adjustable pivot, good thumbstuds, and comes with a decent nylon sheath. Shredded paper out of the box, too.

I've had the $1 knife for a few years and it does the job & keeps going. I got my wife one to keep in her purse & it's her go-to knife for all the little things that a woman would use one for. I absolutely don't trust the liner lock types. I've seen too many fail. I like a knife that just works. I was raised around Buck 110's & still have one, but the dollar knife is the one I keep handy. If it screws up or breaks, BFD... lol

Was I excited when I saw this vid title! Now you're talking my game Fred. The 8 dollar Ozark Trail folder is one of my fav inexpensive useable knives. It really takes a beating and keeps on cutting. Opens easy, locks up solid and takes a razor edge very quickly. I have several of them. Share my vid on your channel so your viewers won't think you're crazy!

I am very happy with my Buck Bantam 284. No thumb stud, like a slip joint. No liner either but the blade is centered. I like the lanyard hole at the back to attach my little push button Energizer flashlight. Also like my Buck Canoe knife very much.

Great video Fred, I think all of us have our cheap starter knives nice to see some of your collection. In some cases the cheap knives come in very handy vs the more expensive ones. You can beat the heck out of em without regret. hehe I have bought some cheap knives from DealExtreme and been very surprised by the quality. Not all of them were gems, but several were exceptional considering they are under 10 dollars. You might want to check out a few of those cause they have some neat designs.

Great review -- thanks! You've probably already heard this, but there is a fantastic Ozark Trail (Walmart) folder that is more recent and much reviewed on youtube -- stonewashed modified tanto (I think), tan G-10 scales with nice scalloping, liner-lock. Just got mine and love it! They have several new ones -- also a nice black blade, blue-ish micarta scales tanto. Anyway, ALL ARE $3.87 each!! (several others you can see on Walmart.com.) The tan one is simply amazing at this price -- equal to many $25 or so blades.

the kershaw looks nice. when we're talking cheap knives though i honestly don't see what difference it makes if the blade is centered. if i was buying a spyderco, benchmade, or microtech i would have to wonder about the quality if the precision isn't there.

It really depends on which Bantam you're talking about, although I have no experience with the mid-sized BLW in this video, or the small BBW, I EDCed the large BHW for a long while and that knife is almost perfectly balanced. And the blade in mine is very well centered too. I've seen other KZbinrs give is fantastic reviews as well, especially when considering it's price.

Good review! There are a few knives which are available for $15 or less which aren't complete junk apparently! I am surprised at the Ka-bar Warthog being less than $15? Everything I have seen from Ka-bar is usually more expensive, good quality, but more money! The Kershaw Crown is a good bargain, I have several and thus far it's been a real bargain for the money and it looks good even! Normally you don't find Micarta on cheaper knives, usually they use thermoplastic, pakkawood or resin for the handles! The steel the blade is made out (8CR13MoV) is the Chinese equivalent of Japanese AUS-8 and it takes a wicked edge and holds it for a while! The vanadium in the metal is a grain refiner and thus allows for micro serrations on the blade edge which makes for a finer edge. Beats 420A or 440A which doesn't have vanadium and in my opinion doesn't take as fine an edge and in the case of 420 doesn't take an edge worth a crap!

Sanrenmu and Ganzo both carry some great knives for less than 20 dollars. The Sanrenmu 7010 is about $7.50 some places and these are truly high quality knives. The sanrenmu 910 plus and 9103, 9104 variants even have ball bearing pivot construction. The Ganzo firebird line has many models with 440c steel that are still under 20 dollars. I do not understand how anyone could do a high value knife video without having Sanrenmu and Ganzo knives even mentioned. My Ganzo F753M even has Carbon Fiber scales and is 440C steel, and is still under 20 dollars as is my Ganzo F754 with g10 scales and 440c steel.

in general, which company would have good pocket knives for under 20 bucks at physical stores (walmart, meijer, target, home depot, etc)? looking for a good edc knife that is under 3 inches (stupid michigan laws), not too obvious when carrying, fairly comfortable, ok looking design, fairly easy to open, and plain edge. right now i only have a mini gerber curve and a random knife i picked up in an antique store pretty sure i haven't seen any of the knives in this video at the stores i go to

I hunt, trap, and bushcraft, so no single-bladed, tactical style pocketknife is worth a penny to me, but someone gave me one of the Smith & Wesson knives, and for what it is, it's definitely worth the money. That's not a good example you have, but Chinese steel is pretty easy to sort out. If it says "440", it's actually a pretty good steel because China doesn't use the same system for making steel that we do.If it isn't marked, however, it's junk steel, and you shouldn't buy it.

My friend got a spring assist knife for 14$. He gave it to me and it is really good. The screws are lose and that causes the whole frame and the blade to shake. It requires a different screw type. The lock up is OK but a little late. it has 440 stainless. It has a excellent pocket clip. Its a little big to carry but it would scare the hell out of someone if you flicked that out. its about 8 inches in length when open.

P.S. The Mora I recommended is made in Sweden, NOT China. The steels they use are far superior to anything I've used so far under $100!!!... they are fixed blades, but only 4" and very useful knives for everything knives are intended for. ;) I don't know how they can sell them for less than $15 at this quality to be honest. I always wear one around my neck, or on my belt or clipped to my pocket.

@ArtisanTony For a sacrificial piece less than $10 you might consider something like the Widgey from CountyComm. Something similar to that item will absorb all kinds of punishment that would destroy even very tough knives. You could even grind one of the edges to be more than sharp enough to cut whatever you'd use a sacrificial knife to cut. -My 2 Cents

Old vid, but still gonna throw in my $.02. lol I have the same Buck, and I actually really like it. It is a very good knife for the money. I typically don't like FRN/plastic handles, but the Buck's is OK and keeps the knife very light. My biggest complaint is the non-adjustable pivot point. Mine is centered but it is very tight making it kind of hard to open smoothly. It certainly is NOT a flick open kind of knife. lol Plus the clip is only a tip-down carry but that isn't a deal-breaker for me. If it were easier to open or I could loosen the pivot without fear of breaking it I would certainly carry it more. So yeah, while not a great knife and could be kind of a crap shoot if bought online, I would say if you can buy it in a store where you can see the knife in the blister pack and make sure it is centered, it is worth the money even if the pivot is a little tight.
