Alan - your reviews are always among the best. I have The One in the regular nylon & it is already very lightweight. I am 6’1” and find it plenty long. Condensation is managed well due to the ground level & upper ridge vents, as well as outward sloping walls - brilliant design. Your pitch looked a little loose across the ridgeline.

Yup, if you watch the video you'll see noticed that and retensioned it. Not a flaw with the tent. Best, -a

Nice review! I recently purchased the 2021 SilNylon version of The One and was pleasantly surprised with the interior space. I’ve noticed that for those taller folks who have concerns about the length, using the included side guylines create a substantial improvement in vertical space at both the head and foot end.

Thanks for sharing! Also, the Nylon Version is a few inches longer than the DCF One. So that helps too. Best, -alan

Excellent review - but I'd just add a caution that "storm-worthy" is a relative term. In areas like Scotland and Scandinavia where many camps are exposed and miles from shelter, the large unsupported panels of the One aren't ideal. I would argue that this is a design that best reserved for sheltered pitches or settled conditions.

Nice tent! I like that the vestibule can be clipped on/off. The low height at the head and feet are a bit concerning, if both doors need to be closed during rain. Inner wall condensation will be an issue then = wet head/hat and wet quilt toe box
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
Good points Jay. As I say, this is a hikers tent not a campers tent. It's focus in on shelter for minimal weight! Not for lounging around for hours in. As to condensation, the pole-sloping-outward-overhanging door allows you to leave a portion of the front of the tent vented (re. door cracked a bit) and still stay dry. The mistake that most hikers make is sealing the tent up like a drum at the first drop of light rain. But yes, if there was hard rain beling blowin in from the front of the tent, you'd likely nead to seal things up and would have some condensation. No free lunches, sub 15-oz single walled shelters are what they are. And I think in this case, the DCF One does commendably well, albeit not at double walled shelter condensation management levels.
@jays73184 жыл бұрын
@@adventure_alan_co Yes, agreed. It looks great for most conditions. In climates where it rains hard a lot, a better choice might be a larger single wall tent (easier to avoid touching condensation-soaked walls/ceilings), or a small double wall tent.

nice review thank you alan . i have question i will thru hike for 20-25 days in mediterrian coast of turkey and maybe backpacking in europe. i will really hike fast and light., what can be a problem for me with sea2summit poncho tarp + bugbivy setup and whats the problem of this setup cons and pros ? thank you for answer 👍
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
The problem is setting up or breaking down camp in hard rain. Since you're rainwear and shelter are one in the same, you are going to get very wet while you setup the ponchos as a tarp or when you take it down. And once setup you have no rainwear for camp. Hope this helps, -alan

Informative video. Hello Allison! The silnylon one is $239 cheaper and only weighs 2.4 ounces more. Is the tarp material going to make a $239 difference?
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
No right answer. It just depends. DCF is stiffer, lighter, stronger and absorbs less water. Less stretching so much less need to get out in the middle of the night to retension the tent. So the answer depends on how important those things are to you for the xtra $. Best, -alan

Looks like a really nice tent for 15 ounces. Did you keep the doors open all night to avoid condensation?
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
As to condensation, the pole-sloping-outward-overhanging door allows you to leave a portion of the front of the tent vented (re. door cracked a bit) and still stay dry - or the door fully to mostly open if it's not raining. The mistake that most hikers make is sealing the tent up like a drum at the first drop of light rain, or when there isn't rain. But yes, if there was hard rain being blown in from the front of the tent, you'd likely nead to seal things up and would have some condensation. No free lunches - sub 15-oz single walled shelters are what they are. And I think in this case, the DCF One does commendably well with condensation as it did when we had it out. Hope this helps. Great review. I'm currently looking at the Tarptent Protrail LI, Zpack Plexamid and the Gossamer Gear DCF-One. All under 16oz. Have an opinion on which of these you suggest.
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
They're all good shelters and have their own strengths. But they are all slightly different - especially in their geometry. The GG One is double pole pitch which gives you the most head and elbow room. The Plexamid is a true single pole pyramid shelter with a spreader panel, so has the 2nd best headroom. The TT Protrail LI is a classic sloping "pup-tent" design with the least amount of headroom. Both the Plexamid and ProTrail Li have 1.0 oz DCF floors. The GG One has a 7d nylon floor. And stay tuned: we have a review of the Plexamid coming out very soon. Best, -alan

What am I missing? It is almost double the price for a less than 3 oz saving over the standard The One. Other than DCF not stretching when it gets wet, are there any other advantages?
@adventure_alan_co3 жыл бұрын
Stronger, doesn't stretch, and it doesn't absorb water so approximately the same weight even when wet and dries super fast vs. nylon which absorbs a lot of water, thus is much heavier when packing up, and takes much longer to dry. Best, -alan

This vs X-mid?
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
Very different tents. DCF ONE is lighter and the DCF fabric is stronger, and doesn't stretch or absorb water. X-Mid is much heavier. BUT it costs less, is fully double walled, and has a door on both sides for better cross ventilation and condensation control. And the X-Mid can be pitch inner only for bug protection, or outer only as a shaped tarp. Hope that helps. Best, -alan

Hi Alan! 🙂 Thank you for your reply concerning the Gatewood Cape poncho tent. What if you wore a 2.7 oz. heat reflective poncho like this www.surviveoutdoorslonger.com/shelters/ponchos/heat-reflective-poncho.html underneath the Gatewood Cape to provide both additional warmth against cold rain as well as still being able to have rain protection on you once you take off the Gatewood Cape poncho to set it up in the tent configuration? Would that work? It could be a way to save over half a pound in your gear load as you wouldn't have to carry a rain jacket and pants (which have condensation as well as soak through issues in prolonged rain). The blaze orange SOL poncho could also be used for signaling in an emergency or to add additional warmth using the heat reflective side (with regular venting to prevent condensation buildup) during unexpectedly cold weather. Thank you for taking the time to answer as well as for making these high quality videos! 😊
@roseivory84964 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan 🙂 What do you think of the 11 oz. Gatewood poncho tent? www.sixmoondesigns.com/products/gatewood-cape It also doubles as rain gear as a poncho. Do you find ponchos like this to be adequate protection (compared to pants + jacket)? This poncho is fully waterproof meaning it won't wet through on long hikes like with a jacket but maybe windblown rain could be a problem... Maybe a combo of this poncho tent AND rain pants and jacket would be a good versatile option for wet climates. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! Thank you so much in advance! 😊
@adventure_alan_co4 жыл бұрын
The problem with a poncho is setting up or breaking down camp in hard rain. Since you're rainwear and shelter are one in the same, you are going to get very wet while you setup the ponchos as a tarp or when you take it down. And once setup you have no rainwear for camp. Hope this helps, -alan

completely bungled by making this tent too short. It's a full NINE INCHES SHORTER than a "normal" (say, Zpacks) tent. EVEN THE TWO is this short. They might be great tents if you're 5'8" or under.
