"Sweetheart" "cute" "adorable"... I don't know, I just can't fathom attributing words like that to a predatory creature driven entirely by ancient, primal instincts in which the only reason you're not on its menu is because you're not the right size. There's really only a few thoughts that go through a snake's mind: threat, non-threat, hungry, not hungry, warm, cold, edible, non-edible. Beyond that, there's just nobody home in there.

Like this kid (no offense), show him children holding snakes and then explain how cheaply they can be maintained. Prove to them that it won't be easy to escape and if it does it'll probably hurt the snake (away from immediate essentials) more than anything else.

Ball pythons can be picky eaters. Some people can never get their snakes to frozen/thawed rodents. Not exactly a deal breaker, but live is more expensive and inconvenient than having some f/t ones in the freezer (unless you have a feeder colony). So it could be deemed a 'negative' trait compared to other snakes. Anyhow, ball pythons are cute and easy to handle. :3
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's true. Luckily the positives outweigh the downsides :)
@colinjava84478 жыл бұрын
Yes that's more or less the only downside with them. Its frustrating when they don't eat for months, which mine tends to now over winter and spring. I think blood pythons are a good snake too, but they can be nippy whereas ball pythons aren't.

Thing about caging: I've heard ball pythons actually do *better* in small-ish enclosures than ones bigger than they need to be, rather than bigger making no bad difference like it would for, say, a corn snake. So, I'm concerned; if I'm getting a baby ball python, would it overstress her or anything else to put her in an adult's tank? I'm hoping to save a decent amount of money, and buying a 'nursery' tank that she wouldn't use after growing to a certain size seems like a waste if I can avoid it. If so, what are some budget-friendly alternatives to keep her in until she gets big enough for her main tank? Should there be a difference in positioning of the hides, water bowl, etc? EDIT: Just watched your updated python care guide thing. Answered alot of questions, including most of these. So, basically, nevermind for the most part.

Has he ever bit you? do they bite often, good with children?
@markchinguz44018 жыл бұрын
Ash Hargis most snakes don't ever bite unless you try to provoke it. Ball pythons in particular are extremely calm and don't bite. The only thing you should pay attention to is the stress level and the way you approach the snake.
@ribbonoosehood65977 жыл бұрын
Most beginner snakes don't bite often unless you provoke it. Corn snake bites are often very quick and nippy, and even if they hold on it won't cause too much damage (personal experience here). Ball pythons I assume have different teeth structure, but they're so calm and slow they won't bite unless you stress the animal out too much
@ExplosivePeeps7 жыл бұрын
Snakes are like any cat or dog, if you provoke them to bite, then yes they will bite. Python's of this breed are extremely placid in nature. If you happen to scare them by accident, the most they will probably do is try to get away from you or musk (poop) on you. Keep in mind you're a lot bigger then they are and they can sense that due to their pits. They go, "Okay he's bigger than me. I can't bite him." But due to their calm nature you really have to try to piss one off in order for it to bite you.

Hey there! So I do have sort of a question... I'm mainly just looking for advice because I've been doing a hella amount of research about ball pythons and I think I could convince my parents that they're nice. So, let's kick off some reasons why they don't want a snake. Mostly, I believe it is just the idea of owning a snake and they see that as a negative thing. We do have quite a lot of cats but like they're all super mellow. My mom is worried of the idea that the cats would try to interact with the snake somehow (yeah, logic) and yeah. I know there's videos that debunk this whole thing and fear of snakes but nothing seems to work with my parents. ps, I'd be paying all the expenses for the snake and the snake itself.
@StainedBrain6 жыл бұрын
Ugh my mom is the same way. I was gonna get a gecko for my birthday last year, I was gonna pay for it and keep it in my room and everything. She said I can't have any pets besides fish. She doesn't even go into my room that often. She won't even see them, unless I want to handle them around the house. She doesn't like pets that much. But we have a cat, a dog, and 40 fish so she just has to deal with them. Back to snakes, she thinks they'll poison me and eat my future children. I want a ball python, or a gecko, or a bird, or my own dog, a rabbit or two, or cat. (Not too many animals at once). We also might be moving soon, to a bigger house, and I'm gonna probably buy my first reptile then. My sister and I are always like "What if we brought home a cat. What if we just brought home a dog right now." Like we really want another animal.

I do want a snake as a pet becus I think they are just to cute but I am worried offen to scare it into biting me. Any words of wisdom?
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
They'll only bite you if you put them in a situation that makes them bite you. Basically, as long as you're careful and calm while handling and doing things in the enclosure, you'll be just fine. While feeding, if you have any scent from it's food on your hands, it may mix up you and the food and might bite you. Just use some snake tongs and keep your hands clear of the snake while feeding. It's also easy to tell when a snake is going to strike out of defense. For example, coiling up into an "S" position means it may strike, hissing, etc. are good things to notice. Even if you are bit, bites from ball pythons or smaller snakes aren't really a big deal and nothing compared to most other pets. I'd rather be bit my one of my snakes than a dog, cat, or even hamster any day lol.

My first (and as of now only) snake lived in one other home for 7 years, had retained eye caps, stuck shed and was severely underweight. The first day I got him I took him out to look him over and he waso friendly , I was amazed, having expected a hissy strikey untamed snake sincehis owner held him a couple times a year. I've had him five months, he's back to great weight, has fully shed twice, the second coming off in only two pieces, has fixed his eye caps and is always so excited to. Out and about. His colors have come in beautifully, going from a dull brown to an almost coppery color, eats great (though he's getting fed 3x more than he used to get. So every three week opposed to every two months.) I know its recommended every the days, but I'm worded about over feeding considering he ins weight so easily

@kachow86158 жыл бұрын
How do you maintain the correct humidity? Do you mist their terrarium often?
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
Good point, Barry. @Egglord The average house humidity is about 30 to 40 percent and ball pythons need about 50%. Becauase you're going to have a pretty large water bowl with them, the water slowly evaporating in there near the heat lamp is actually enough to keep the humidity correct. If it is still dropping below, then you could mist it a bit every couple days. Just make sure it's not always damp in there because that'll cause mold to grow.

Ball pythons are great, but Texas rat snakes are my absolute favorite. I live in the middle of nowhere, so it isn't uncommon to see one crossing the road at night. Every time I see one on in the road, I either help it to the other side, or I take it along for the ride lol they are the most docile snakes you'll ever come across. It's amazing really. After just a few minutes of bonding, it's almost like you've known each other for years. I always release them after a few hours, but I never forget them.

Hello, I know this is an old video, but you mentioned feeding and pooping once a week. I have had my Ball for around 4 months now, and I have only ever cleaned up poop one time. she is not bloated or anything around the tail section, also I have cleaned up some small solid chunks of urates, but those were definitely not poop sized or colored. they were small white chunks. those are pretty common, but a big full brown piece of poop has only ever showed up once.

Great video, dude! Just wanted to know about ball pythons as pets, and your video showed up in the top few results. You have put in a lot of great info here. 👍 Can you make a video about how to get a new one adjusted to its new surroundings (the house, the tank, etc), without freaking him/her out?

Why are Ball pythons so cute, I've wanted a pied ball python for a couple years but my parents don't want me get anymore exotics even though I only have 5. But I've wanted a snake for awhile and the snake I keep going back to are ball pythons because they're sweet hearts.
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
You said it best, ball pythons are the sweethearts of snakes haha. 5 exotics is definitely a good family of pets you've got going there. If you ever do get the chance to get a ball python, you won't be disappointed!

Does having a heat lamp dry the enclosure out for the python because I understand they need decent amount of humidity, I just have a heat mat for my python but it’s not hot enough in his tank

So during the bonding process, how many times have they tagged you? I used to work in a sanctuary with reptiles and got bit a lot by our bigger ones, but if I get a younger one, is there still a period where they strike? I desperately want a Ball Python, but want to make the necessary prep first.
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
I was never bit :) The only time he ever did bite me was while I was hand-feeding him. I wasn't paying attention and because the scent of mouse was on my hands, he went past the mouse and grabbed my hand instead. He immediately realized it wasn't a mouse and let go, then went for the mouse instead lol. Each ball python is different so you may come across some that are a bit more defensive, however they are generally an extremely docile species. Even when I was bit, there were only a few drops of blood and it healed up in like 2 days.

When it comes to the water the ball pythons drink should i give them natural spring water or regular tap water?
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
I think natural spring water sometimes contains things like fluoride that benefit us but can be dangerous to reptiles. What I do is use tap water with Reptisafe drops. You can also fill some clean water jugs with tap water and let it sit for 24 hours. This lets any chlorine or other chemicals evaporate so by the time you give it to your snake, it'll be distilled water. Reptisafe: www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-ReptiSafe-Water-Conditioner/dp/B0002568SG

I placed my pet ball python on my carpet floor once and pressed my ear on the ground next to it and heard it moving. I love my snake to bits. I've had him for a few months now. He's pretty calm.

I agree with this guy so much for so many reasons. 1. We both have the same first name. 2. We have the same type of snake. 3. The facts are true. and 4. He likes snakes like me. Also, my ball python was also only one hundred dollars. So he wasn't lying when he said they were cheap.

So is it ok to let your ball python go outside in the grass with supervison and if so how long
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
My ball python's not a fan of grass, I don't think he likes how prickly it is, even though my corn snake enjoys it haha. However, I think it's great to take them out to let them get some fresh air and move around a bit as long as you're constantly watching it. I don't think there's any specific length of time, you'll just need to play it by ear until the snake either gets anxious or you get bored lol

This might be a weird question but how often does a BP poop? Also, how often do you change the bedding?
@GoHerping7 жыл бұрын
As often as you feed it. If you're feeding it once a week, it'll poop about once a week. Right now, I'm using paper towel as substrate so I just replace it all each time it gets dirty. If you're using a loose substrate like cypress chips or aspen shavings, etc. you can usually just spot clean, meaning you grab any soiled or wet parts of substrate and add in a little bit more fresh shavings or chips.

hey I noticed that only one of my baby ball pyhton eyes is milky and the other one is normal clear. do u know what's wrong with him :(
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
Has he shed at all in the past couple days? It's possible only one of the eyecaps came off during shed or that one of the eyes aren't ready to shed yet. I'd wait a few days to see if he ends up shedding, both eyes go foggy, or it stays the same and go from there.

hello.i have ball python 30 days old.i was wonder how much on daily base i can handle him.she is eating well and she is not stresed.i allready handle him but i dont know can i do that 3-4-5 hours or only 20-30 minutes?
@dinogtr35538 жыл бұрын
how often do you handle him an how much time?
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
If you would say it's not stressed and is eating just fine, I'd say as much as you'd like. Some snakes just have to get used to it but it sounds like yours is already pretty adjusted.

Blaze Moseley Well if you're feeding frozen thawed I'd say between 5-15 dollars if you're feeding frozen thawed and depending on the age of the snake
