15 Reasons Washington Ain't For Everyone 1435pm 17.7.24 and rust never sleeps hence your 24/7 coffee shops, constant door slamming from hyper caffiene laden hippes and dealing with alleged bad manners which seems to be an east eurpean trait probably trynna stifle their guilt re: fraud...... hence their going west, young man. i live in Uk - north england - and it rains just about as much here as in your seattle. and it really does bother me in summer time - wheni really should be expecting some sunshine. you must still have temperate rainforests if that's the case..whereas the Uk seems to be living off of the folk memories when such matters were akin to your environment....... as for vistors. we don't get 'em and if we do they seem to go missing. probaly end up being eaten over booth way or bacup. good luck!!!!

As someone who lives in the Pacific Northwest, it's not the rain itself that is horrible. It is the constant overcast skies and lack of sun that can really take a toll on many people. Because of our northernly latitude, we get very short days in the winter but long days in the summer. Going to work when its dark and dreary and coming home from work when its dark and dreary can make it unpleasant for many people. Most of the rainy days are concentrated between October and May. June through September is wonderful, very sunny but also quite hot. One of the major things I miss about the East Coast are thunderstorms and actually enjoying the rain after a very hot summer. Hearing the sound of thunderstorms at night was awesome.

I live in Hoodsport right next to the Olympics. People are friendly here once they know you are part of the community. We are sounded by rivers and mountains and stunning views. It rains a lot..a lot. But the summers are nice and can be hot. Over all its a place you either embrace and go with the rain or you move. We are not for everyone.

Moved to Seattle in 2014 and that was the thing I noticed immediately. I missed the thunderstorms of New Jersey. The rain is overhyped in Washington as you don’t even need an umbrella most of the time. Getting ready to move to Juneau though, can’t deal with the wokesters here anymore.

There are plenty of conservative-heavy areas in Washington outside of the major metro areas. That’s what is truly fascinating about all three west coast states. When you leave the major metro areas, it quickly becomes more conservative and independent.

I moved to Seattle from Minnesota in 1991. The Seattle Freeze is very real, very different from the town of 2,500 dairy farmers I moved from. After having an entire town knowing all about my business, Seattle’s indifference was a breath of fresh air. But, after a while, loneliness set in. The best thing and the worst thing about Seattle was that “nobody cared.”

I'm from Melbourne, Australia, and the "Seattle freeze" would be applicable to all of Australia. It's considered normal here to only hang out with buddies you made in high school. I still find it quite shocking - and very heart-warming - that people in America actually come up and have a chat with you in public, or so I've heard. I can't imagine that happening here. Everyone's nice, but they keep to themselves and their inner circle from when they were 18.

So I think seattle is just like a toned down American friendliness, which feels unfriendly to a lot of Americans. lol but they do say that the PNW folks are friendly but not kind. Where’s the east coast folks are not friendly but kind. I felt like i best related to the Midwest transplants in the PNW, and that the people I knew from the PNW were weirdly passive aggressive. Per natural disasters, I have relatives in the Midwest. One time while visiting they commented that it would soon be tornado season. Later on that evening, one commented how they were glad they didn't live in Washington where all those volcanos were. I never corrected them but there are far more people getting killed by tornados than are by volcanos.

It's similar to my friends from FL that say they would never live in the northwest because of the super volcano. There are hurricanes nearly every year in FL, but the chance of a volcano was the thing that scared them away. Not the most logical people.

In my dream world I'd live in the cascades and frolick in the ferns, but i just can't afford to survive here anymore. The traffic is insane on the west side and crime is getting worse, and despite being somwhat politically left leaning the bombarding of excessive new gun laws ruined and taxed my hobby into oblivion within a 4 year span and its getting more excessive as the months pass. I never thought in a million years I'd want to move to the south but thats exactly where I'm going as soon as I can break the financial shackles. Well if you're an introvert who can be antisocial sometimes and has at times been socially awkward although actually as I've gotten older I've become less socially awkward and less antisocial and actually more sociable but the fact is if you're somebody who doesn't feel the need to just keep making friends, then yeah you'll feel like you have enough. I know people who have like a hundred friends and it seems because of that their friends are always flaking out on them. I mean now that I limit myself to about four or five friends at least in person ones I don't seem to really have to worry about that so much. About the "Seattle Freeze" - this may or may not be relevant, but I remember reading something about that in some small magazine around 1992. The article said they used to be so friendly and welcoming until the grunge music scene turned Seattle into a Mecca for teens and twentysomethings. (Also they mentioned a lot of runaway teens going to Portland, similar to the way kids would leave home for SF in the 60s). They said Seattle was overwhelmed by people coming from everywhere wanting to be part of the music scene and not leaving. I remember this particular article because a friend had recently done that exact thing and I mailed him the article. Edit - Also, thanks for treating people nicely on both sides of politics. You're one of the few on here who treats both sides the same in your videos. You make jokes about both sides, which is something I remember people always doing and is normal, but you say things like "if you're right leaning this would be good for you and if your left leaning this other place would be good for you" and you don't put in a little dig to only one side, consistently, like lots of KZbinrs do. It's nice to hear someone being normal.

80% of Seattle drivers are overly cautious to a fault, 15% are regular decent drivers, and 5% think they are on Fast and the furious. You can hear them congregate on late nights. Most of the freeway traffic is self imposed as I-5 will be backed up but will often have many vehicles with 5+ car lengths between them. Also roll the dice at any point in time for there to be a random traffic jam. Oh and most of them are afraid of "slight" curves on the freeway.

Anybody who makes that claim doesn’t know anything about Washington. There are 5 different micro climates in the state. If you don’t like the weather where you are at you can drive about 60 miles in just about any direction and the weather will be completely different. SW Washington is mostly sunny and warm from mid spring to mid fall. The winter is grey and it rains but rarely snows. The daytime temperature in winter rarely dips below freezing for more than a couple of weeks, and usually not in a row. All in all, the climate is mild.

@chillaxin813 First of all it was a joke. Second, where does 70% of that state live? On the west side where the rain is. The general consensus is, IT RAINS ALOT. That is the joke. The joke is ruined if it sounds like this: "It’s a place where the word sun is local folklore. Of course, the entire state is made up of 5 different micro-climates which depending on the season could be very dry. That is something you should know so random locals don't whine and cry when you make a simple joke about the weather." One last thing, I live in Portland, which in case you don't have a globe is right next to SW Washington. I don't know who you are trying to fool but it rains a lot compared to most of the country.

The part about the rain is what I couldn’t take because it’s not just the rain, it’s the clouds too. When it’s not raining, it’s cloudy and dreary. I never knew how bad it was until I lived there for a year. Summer is nice with not much hotter than in the 80s but the rest of the year I was wearing sweaters and layers every day. The "Seattle Freeze" is very misunderstood, IMO. I grew up in the Midwest, where there's a societal expectation to reciprocate any and all pleasantries, and that just doesn't exist here. People aren't overtly rude, it's just not part of the culture to always butter eachother up. I have ASD, and, let me tell you, it has been *infinitely* easier to make friends and meet new people here in the PNW than the Midwest. It's a societal mode that I am very comfortable with, but I can understand how others might feel since that's how I've felt just about everywhere else I've lived!

I think part of it has to do with the weather. Here in Seattle it's perfectly socially acceptable to cancel even long-planned activities because the sun suddenly appeared. If you blow off getting together with someone and give the excuse that the weather was nice and you took out the boat instead that would be accepted with no argument since frankly if you had a boat you would have done that too.

I do NOT understand people who don’t like rain! It makes the streets safe, it makes the plants green, it makes coffee taste better, it makes for a cozy day indoors reading a book or watching a movie, or for a refreshing hike in the forest (never rains that hard in the PNW to not be able to go outside still with the right gear). It’s honestly the thing I’d miss the most if I left. Water is magic, and it mostly keeps the heat away too.

I get it though, people come in from out of state or even out of town and instead of accepting the area for what it is they want to change things to reflect where they came from. The freeze doesn't last all that long if you become a part of the community, but if you keep yourself more separated from it then you will always be an outsider in their eyes. Hey Briggs, speaking of Alaska, where I lived for 22 years, let me give you a bit of recent anecdotal information. I lived in Haines for 22 years. In my opinion, the best small town in Alaska. 70 miles up the fjord from Juneau. A small (not insane) but thriving tourism and cruise ship economy in the summer, accounting for one third of the economy. Haines absolutely does not get the crime of the Anchorage area. And for the years I lived there (until 2018) the housing prices were relatively stable and affordable. With the natural world, strong community, and much lower latitude, it was an incredible place to live. Then I left... probably the cause of all of the future woe. I left NYC then 9/11 came. I recently went back to send some of my stuff across the oceans to Georgia (NOT the US state). First the pandemic came in 2020. And for 2 years there was no tourism. Then in December 2020 came the biggest rainstorm that anyone in living memory could remember. 2 people died when a side of mountain came down. Home were demolished. Then by 2023 officially over 420 and left the entire Chilkat Valley area, which when I left in 2018 had a 2,500 population. Then came the horrendous inflation. Prices were higher when I lived there, but now??? And with that home prices were jacked, even though many sit empty. My friends say it's a depression. Home prices are being artificially inflated by people desperate to get the money they put into their homes. But that market will tumble in a year or two. Anyway... it's still a great place, better natural sights than a majority of national park, great community, the weather isn't too bad, think better than the great lakes area, no crime worth discussing, and some younger people have been moving up there. The tourism economy is slowly coming back. But this would be a great place for people who can work from home, or who need real nature and animals. It's the kind of place certain folks want to raise children in. And dogs have rights too.

@@WorldAccordingToBriggs What makes Haines better is that you don't have to run the gauntlet of diamond stores. Holland America and Princess have ships that stop in Haines. I highly recommend it. And if you come in the later part of the summer you CAN see bears. And tones of eagles. By the way pro-tip: take the ferry from Bellingham. Get a cabin on the ocean side. Then wonder around and just get into conversations.And it's the easiest thing to do. You only need to ask one question to have an amazing conversation: Why are you going to Alaska. Go all the way to Haines. The first day is quiet with no stops. Then stay in Haines for a week, there is plenty to do in the summer. Raft trips, jetboat tours, bear viewing, hiking trails (not near the bear zone), local brewery (get the spruce tip ale or the root beer), a distillery, two great pizza places, the first military base in Alaska, Tlingit carving, rent a car and go over the border into Canada, to the mountains, to Whitehorse in the Yukon, etc. Glaciers, mountains, rivers, fjords, moose, five kinds of salmon, state fair. I was on the phone with someone in Anchorage, AK, and they had lived in Seattle for 5 years, and they told me that they preferred Anchorage over Seattle, because they can see the sun more often, even with the comparatively very short days up there during the winter. I moved to Seattle from Oahu a couple years ago. Strangely, I found a lot of people from Hawaii here. (I work with four people from Hawaii.) And Seattlites usually ask the same question. “You’re from Hawaii? Why would you move here?” First, Hawaii is expensive but Seattle is about the same now, but Hawaii has not many jobs and low pay. Second, Hawaii has no seasons. It’s summer all year long and the temperature ranges from hot to hotter. (They don’t sell jackets or sweaters there) That gets really old. Plus, it’s so isolated. If you can’t afford to fly a few thousand miles to see something different, all you can do is drive around in a circle and see the same things forever. So Seattle is new and refreshing. And I agree with everything Briggs said in this video. But finding work is a breeze here. I got a job in one day without an interview. Very strange and very cool. Lots of homelessness and lots of drugs but so is Hawaii now. Seattle is very liberal and so is Hawaii, it’s just that Seattle is professionally liberal. It’s not just situational. And that’s fine. Harmless.

Moved here in 2018, this video is spot on. The freeze is real, but we did get a house with some great neighbors. People would rather look at the ground than acknowledge another person for the most part. The gloom got me in 2023. It was cloudy and rained from October 22 to June 23. I was over it and ready to leave. I was excited to move here so i could hike and explore. That was until i found out that the trailheads are hotbeds for break-ins. Did it happen in IL? Sure, but not to this level. Politically, it's way farther left than IL is/was. Taxes here are more hidden than other places. May not have an income tax, but the gas tax is nuts and now we have the long term care tax. Sales tax is comparable to IL, but slightly highere here. Property taxes here are less than IL, 3500 vs 5500, while home prices are about double what we left.
@Trix897
@Trix897 2 ай бұрын
Not sure where in IL you’re from, but I’ll second that on the property taxes. I was considering moving back to my hometown of Champaign at one point, but when I looked at a comparable condo to what I have in Kent (2BR/1BA 850 sq ft), it was 2/3 the price, but almost EXACTLY the same when it came to property taxes. Illinois’s gas tax is starting to creep up to Washington’s levels too. So yeah…going back to my roots is becoming less and less appealing.

@woodxj
@woodxj Ай бұрын
@@BezmenovDisciple Washington state's long-term care tax, also known as the WA Cares Fund, is a 0.58% payroll tax on Washington residents' wages that went into effect in July 2023. This tax funds the Long-Term Services and Support Act (WA Cares) program, which provides qualifying Washington residents with up to $36,500 in long-term care benefits starting in July 2026. The benefit can be used to offset long-term care expenses like meals, equipment, and caretaking for people who are disabled, injured, or older.

Regarding the politics: it was never mentioned how much the eastern part of the state is different from the western part. The east is much more Republican leaning but is largely ignored due to being overshadowed by the almighty Seattle, plus the Electoral College system means that the east's voices never get heard on a national level. You may have even heard that some people in eastern Washington (and Oregon) wish they could secede from their respective states and join Idaho.

@travisligocki
@travisligocki 16 күн бұрын
@@TheRobdarling You mean the roads and bridges that haven't been maintained since the 70's! The politicians just keep adding taxes and the liberals don't care. More taxes per capita are raised in Central and Eastern Washington than in Western Washington. This is due to having more business owners per capita 3x as many as Western Washington. Washington would lose 44% of its revenue if everything from the top of the Cascades east left the state. If both Eastern Washington and Oregon were to join Idaho it would increase Idaho's revenue by 800%. Meaning that Idaho would have a higher revenue than either remaining parts of both Washington and Oregon.

As a Seattle local you pretty much nailed every reason though you are missing the big number 1 reason, locals don't want people to move here. The city and the state are growing way too fast and that in turn drives up prices for everything from food to haircuts to dentists to auto repair and that ticks long-time residents off. Now it;'s not like France where transplants aren't treated the same even 20 years later but expect for the first few years to not be all that welcome, especially if you are from California. Everyone here longs for the days of the '80s and '90s when things were affordable and nothing was too over crowded. It used to be that exaggerating the rain (something everyone does up here) would keep people away but eventually the rest of the country saw through the ruse and the floodgates opened.

The beauty of this place can be overwhelming. All the jeweled colors everywhere. But the five months of darkness and rain can overwhelm you in a negative way, especially if you grew up in sunshine and warmth. Here twenty two years and the five months of dark, cold, and rain still depress the hell out of me. I would be very careful about choosing WA as your forever home. If you are prone to true depression I would say seek the sun.
