I would definitely add sunscreen and bug repellent. I haven't been camping in years but I still have my camping check list. Its probably 20 years old. Big believer in that list.

Great tips! Water is always good because dehydration can impair the ability to think straight which can really make a mess of things. The advantage of winter camping is that there are no insects, and the campfire smoke goes nearly straight up.🔥 Some colleges have good rental camping gear at the Student Union. I am looking forward to your next adventure.😊

Great video Nadine!! I consider myself a pretty hard core camper. My husband and I car camp at least once a month. These are great tips that we also use. I would add to this list, bring a shovel, axe, small hand lighter or torch, something to fan a fire (metal blow wand, plate, or bellow) and fire starter/tinder. Fire is one of our favorite things about camping and it can be hard to start one in certain terrain and weather. Lighter fluid won’t do it. You need the basics and some patience. We have also had to dig out a campsite in snow before or dig our rig out of mud or sand. You just never know. Good to have the tools that make it easier.

If you're at a popular campground, know that a lot of the campers will be RVers... & they do not always realize that their neighbors in the tents can over hear everything they're saying & doing! So, bring earplugs.

Especially with backcountry but I think all types of camping - make sure you tell someone (who is not with you) where you are going and approximately when you will be at what sites.

I’m glad you suggested making to sure to know how to use the equipment you bring. A lot of people buy a lot of stuff they think they might not or could need and they don’t know how to use it. I always suggest that with the first aid kit as well know what medical emergencies it can handle and what it can’t so in the event you need it you know how to use it and if it’s more serious than what you can handle how to get help if need be.

Set up your tent in your backyard before you travel if you haven't camped in a while. Tent bag/pack could be missing poles, pegs or any number of things. Also if it's been put away for a while it could be mouldy or have holes (mice or other pests can do this) and you don't want to have to sleep in a mouldy tent because you have no choice. WILL defo ruin the trip.
@mattofstie9298

Yes 100% this. The tent is arguably the most important equipment to test before you leave so definitely set it up and check it out

I haven't gone camping in a very long time. It was probably when I went with my parents when I was a kid. It was a lot of fun though! I totally agree with you on making reservations ahead of time. I know there are campgrounds here in Michigan especially on Lake Michigan which can book up on summer (and especially holiday) weekends very early in the year.

If you have a new tent, practise putting it up several times on the front lawn before you go. You might want to put it up quickly if the weather is rough at your campsite, and knowing exactly what to do will make it so much easier. Don't camp under a tree in cooler climates because it's colder there than out in the open. I don't know why that is so, but I learned that from experience.

When you pick your spot, make sure that it is at least 100 feet away from streams and lakes, to help protect streamside vegetaion, and prevent pollution. -US Forest Service Protect shorelines by camping more than 60 m from lakes and streams. - Leave No Trace Canada

Bring a writing utensil. I was at a campsite last summer and when paying cash (great tip to always carry cash) I realized I didn't have a pen or pencil and had to bother another group of campers to borrow a pen 😬
