You are correct , Doctor, life is just not that simple! I love how you refer to books from medical professions, which I am glad to say that I have in my library! This makes me feel that I am on the proper track to gaining a better understanding. Life is just one continuous journey of education, attaining greater knowledge and making hopefully a better person from what you were the day before! I truly appreciate your channel, your analytical processes! I saw my physician today and he was totally blown away by my understanding of my ischemia stroke, my cholesterol numbers and ratios, which statin I should be taking to reduce coronary inflammation, proper diet, exercise, etc. My mother would have been proud of me, rest her soul.

Thanks. Had a 'minor' heart attack 6 months ago , walked into ER. I'm 60 and was pretty athletic most of that. But also smoked off and on . Drank a bit too much and ate same, way too much sweets. Major lifestyle changes , lost 30lbs and few more to go. Your reasoned info has been valuable in that I'm applying it. I fast regularly, eliminated almost all my processed foods and sugars. Proper supplements to assist. Exercise. No smoking. I may still go out with a big one but I believe I've postponed it. It's a beautiful thing to have a that wake up call. And answer it. Thanks again for your work towards informing us.

Dr. B, your "straight from the hip" honesty about where the science leads us is of FAR more importance and value than any perceived "inconclusiveness," whatever that means. It's why I come here first, and will continue to do so, because I know it will be the unsugar-coated truth from the best evidence we have to date. As you say, "It's not that simple." I always enjoy your videos and am enlightened by them. Most of my career has been involved in the intersection of science and regulation. What people do not understand about science is that at any given time and subject is is refutable based on new understanding [research]. Science is not Religion nor does it have 'god like' qualities. It is reproducible experimental observation based on available knowledge. It is at any given time and in all areas, incomplete. Cellular and molecular biology is subject to confounding variables and incomplete knowledge. Finding the bulk of study and good cross reference is the closest you can get. So many times, I have found leading studies in PubMed and they just STOP with a few studies. I have a friend, who was going for his Ph.D. in Soil Fertility [agronomy] and three years into his research, a string of new research proved his thesis incorrect. He never completed his Ph.D. and this was a blow that he never overcame.

Hello again Dr. Brewer, Excellant video and again backed up with the research to hopefully start folks on a healthy lifestyle. One point you made about fasting made me smile. It seems we've added so much wheat gluten into our food to make us hungry all the time. I'm guilty of exceeding the feed limit and feel like Pavlovs dog as I look at the clock and say I'm hungry. My best friend is a DVM and he's seen a trend developing where horses are becoming diabetic. Dogs and cats are struggling with dietary issues leading to diabetes and urinary infections. He feels it's the wheat gluten which we can't make enough of , so we import it from China whose quality controls are questionable. After my wake up call in 2002, I'm militant about my and my children, reading the labels of our food. They came shopping with me and I had them read what they wanted to buy. NO HIGH FRUCTOSE, no vegetable broth ,( in canned tuna), no eating anything they couldn't pronounce. I tried to tell them about BPAs in canned goods and we bought fresh organic veggies ,and very sparingly, red meat. I wanted to live long enough to see them grow up and as a result, they're in their twentys now and I'm 71 and going strong. They hold me accountable now. Thank you for the lives you touch with the talents you've been given and the passion that drives you. Respectfully, Charles H. Bryan

Yes, Dr Brewer, clearly there are people who think you are annoyingly inconclusive at times, but there are others-the vast majority of your listeners/ readers,-who feel as I do that your caution in drawing conclusions is actually a prescription for better health for your patients and KZbin watchers! You don’t get carried away with the latest shiny new theory, med, or supplemental quick fix-and that thoughtful approach is just one of the qualities which make you such a treasure for those of us seeking a pathway to better health. Your guidelines are evidence-based, and this allows us to trust you. ( And by the way, your Rant is not at all out of place-I’ve been wondering when you were going to stand up and explain to any nay-sayers that your profession as a physician is science-based as well as the practice of an ancient art.)

Hey I am a huge fan of your videos. Pardon me for interrupting as you may put it, but if IR/T2DB is undiagnosed as much as you suspect then I can only surmise that statistical outcomes of CVD events for those who are truly metabolically healthy might just be even better than we thought all along, even in the face of so called bad lipid profiles.

This is such an excellent summary to many of your videos. Thank you Dr Brewer! I didn’t see a list I could copy tho in the comments so I’m adding this one if other would like a copy. It’s great stuff! I think it’s pretty close but my x ray vision was not up to snuff today but I think I got the gist of those that few I couldn’t read. :) 1. You CAN reverse plaque. 2. You CAN reverse most diabetes / IR. 3. Glycemic carbs are NOT harmless to you if you have IR. 4. IR/ Diabetes is not just obesity, or a high carb diet; age is still a major driver, probably the biggest one. 5. You CANNOT supplement your way out of a bad lifestyle. 6. You CANNOT medicate yourself out of a bad lifestyle. 7. Like it or not medications have a place. 8. That includes statins. 9. Whether the docs like it or not, supplements have a place. 10. Periodontal disease IS casually related to CV inflammation. 11. CV inflammation is a FAR bigger cause of heart attack, stroke, death, and disability than high LDL; I.e. our medical standards are wrong. 12. Over half of adults have IR / T2DM. It’s far more than unfortunate - it’s tragic- that docs and patients are ignoring it. 13. IR / T2DM is the MAJOR cause of CV inflammation, and therefore the major cause of death and disability and yet we continue to ignore it. 14. There are 58,000 names on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. 58,000 die every 3 weeks due to T2DM / IR /prediabetes and cardiovascular disease. And in 3 weeks, 58,000 more. These deaths could happen two decades later if the underlying condition (IR / T2DM / prediabetes) were identified and managed. 15. Fasting, whether mimicked, intermittent, or prolonged, decrease the root cause of T2DM / IR / prediabetes high blood sugar and insulin. Kudos to those that do it. To those that don’t - rethink your strategy.

Exceptional video that cuts right to the main points about health. I came to understand some time ago how little I knew about biology/genetics/health, and I started to learn and change the way I think. It can be difficult to be able to adequately evaluate new information without some minimal framework. I try to learn something new on health every day. Until three years ago I would have never thought about fasting. I am waiting for the results of a Kraft insulin survey test, and I will use that to gauge my level of IR. Ultimately individuals are responsible for their health rather than solely relying on their doctors, and that is probably the most powerful message from your channel. Thank you.

The reason I subscribe to your channel and watch your videos is because you state the science and not just your opinions as a doctor. While I can learn from watching channels like Eric Berg and Chris Masterjohn, I often have to verify or "fact check" what they are saying--watching them feels like they are just on KZbin for the money. That is why I like watching channels like yours, What I've Learned, and FoundMyFitness (Rhonda Patrick); I want to learn, and I think that your videos give a great look at the science and what it means. You keep talking about how people want less detail, but as soon as your channel starts the (Chris Masterjohn's motto) "details schmetails just tell me what works," approach is when I will stop watching.

I think you always hit the nail on the head. As humans, we like to think we understand everything that touches our life. But that idea is for our own comfort. When I went to college to study chemistry, after year 1 I thought I knew everything. By the time I graduated, I thought I knew nothing. The reason is as we progress in knowledge, it becomes more apparent what we don't know. BTW: There was a doctor a Duke University, Dr. Walter Kempner, who could cure diabetics with a very strict, severe diet. Interesting study.

Great video, not because of the information as much as the organization. Your videos should all be this direct and organized. I suggest you write out your bullets before shooting your video and stick to the points. I'm 75, lost 35-40# over a couple of years due to Buproprion, got a T2D dx at 70, started swimming again after literally 50 years out of the water and now swim 6-10 miles/week. Take Berberine, atorvastatin, fish oil, baby aspirin and lithium. Still sit in front of this computer far too long every day though. Getting ready to do your recommended inflammation tests and a CIMT. One suggestion for a video is to investigate the apoe4 polymorphism and correlate it with CVD and IR.

Do you have a diet to reverse heart disease? I just quit statin on Jan 17th after my heart attack last April and they put in a stent. I don’t want to go through that again so I don’t wNt anymore arteries plagued
@andredarin89663 жыл бұрын
One question: Isn’t the person who becomes aware they are at risk for any disease, let’s say periodontal disease, and who begins taking Folic acid which binds to endotoxins (byproducts of bacteria) and renders them neutral, thereby preventing periodontal disease, to some extent “supplementing themselves out of a disease”?. There’s a review on Amazon written by a former Navy fighter and airline pilot, Dave Thomas, who cleared three arteries, each blocked 65% with CAC, by significantly ramping up his intake of vitamin C from acerola cherries and K2 MK7 (2,000mg and 1,200mcg, respectively). As incredulous as it sounds, I also know of a woman who, after suffering a major infarction that left her breathless when walking 10 yards, meditated her way back to heart health. There were no meds, procedures, or noticeable lifestyle changes. Another, diagnosed with HER2 breast cancer, did the same. She became cancer free. Certainly, it remains to be seen if these reversals stick but their doctors have been utterly confounded.

My mom recently sent me a photo of myself taken just after I graduated from college (21 or 22 years old). I was shocked to see how obvious my insulin resistance was even back then. I would lay odds at 85% that I had NAFLD just based on that photo. We are massively under utilizing ultrasound technology. We are massively under diagnosing insulin resistance. If I had known then what I know now (Dr. Kraft 1970's - not new stuff here) how my life would have been different......

Hello sir, I commented on a live feed of yours saying my total cholesterol numbers were (total cholesterol 304) I went on a statin as well as stopping smoking as well as changing diet my statin is rosuvastatin 40 mg, in 3 - 4 months my cholesterol dropped too (187 total, 121 ldl, 46 hdl, 101 triglycerides.) You mentioned something about k2 and or blood glucose has a major play in heart attack!? Where can I research to lower my chances even more?? My mother’s side of family has history of high cholesterol and early heart disease heart attack that being my mother’s father my grand father, and my mother’s brother!

Thanks for sharing that. Glucose is by far the most likely & biggest next focus point(unless you use tobacco - if so, tobacco is the biggest problem ). Look up my videos on INSULIN RESISTANCE. Or find them under the IR playlist. Also, I have a course coming out soon on Insulin Resistance. I've switched to a low carb/keto diet and have been incorporating intermittent fasting over the past 6 weeks. I have lost 12lbs, and have about 60 more to lose. I eat lots of green vegetables and a few berries here and there. Is it ok to include small amounts of beans in one's diet? If not now, maybe down the road? I've always heard they are healthy and they contribute a lot of fiber. What do you think? How much how often?
@kenycharles86005 жыл бұрын
aballard527 it worked for me. Or, I should say I think beans helped me to loose weight. I am not a doctor. I went from 265 pounds to 205 pounds. It took me 6-8 months. Three or more days a week, sometimes, I would make beans and greens and rice. 15 beans soup usually, and usually I would add Rotel, onions and garlic to the beans. The greens were usually collard greens or kale and I usually add Rotel and onions and garlic. The rice usually was wild rice mixed with a brown rice blend. The greens get a shot of vinegar once I get all this to the plate. If you are insulin resistant you should probably monitor your blood sugar levels after a meal with this many carbohydrates. I was told by my doctor that I was showing signs of insulin resistance along with high blood pressure. This may not work for you. Dr. Brewer or John Lorshieder may give you a better answer. You may want to wait for their response. It may throw you out of ketosis. Or it is probably a full days supply of carbohydrates. Good luck. I hope you get to have some beans.

I soak the beans for several days before cooking to remove as many lectins as possible or cook them in a pressure cooker. Lectins can raise hell in your body. Best to avoid if possible.

If you are low carb/keto then green beans are the only low carb bean I know of, unless you eat minuscule portions.

I have narrowing of arteries in my neck it is called brue . Not sure if I spelled it right. I have had some small stokes that last only a few minutes where I can’t see and everything is spinning. My doctor says that the blockage is not bad enough for surgery and tells me to take aspirin every day. What is your thoughts?

The problem is that we are complex systems; research gives us statistics about large populations, yet many doctors treat we individuals as if we're representative of that population, and no single person is truly representative in all respects (or perhaps, in very many respects at all.) We need to individualize treatment, using perhaps the statistical studies as clues to what might work, but if there was a one size fits all solution, we'd have found it by now.

Thanks so much for this info. I always learn something from your videos. I have heart disease that keeps progressing even though I take Praluent injectable and have a good diet. I've asked my cardiologist to add a low dose statin to address CV inflammation. Normally I can't tolerate statins, but hopefully I can tolerate a lower dose.

Hello Doc, if a person is prediabetic how much fruits he/she can eat to avoid inflammation?
@PrevMedHealth4 жыл бұрын
Focus on low sugar fruits, like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries.

Going over the details of your conclusions is very helpful. There's so much dietary "information" being put up on KZbin that's seem to have a certain amount of contradiction. Your conclusion that carbohydrates are the major cause of CV disease seems to be in fairly strong opposition to what some very famous dietary docs like macdougal, ornish and esselyton are saying. Maybe I'm missing something? But, that's been what I've noticed.

"CV inflammation is a FAR bigger cause of heart attack", ie. the cause of building-up (soft) plaque in the arteries. Question: Dr Brewer why did all your inflammation markers show "green", ie showing no serious inflammation. And yet your CIMT showed serious plaque build up in your arteries. I am confused, as you may understand.
@OfftoShambala5 жыл бұрын
Interesting question. The real question is why are the arteries being flooded with cholesterol? This is an immune response essentially. Some have suggested that poor quality salts, like those often used in mass factory produced processed foods is causing ‘cuts’ in the lining of arteries and the natural response by the body is to send cholesterol to the damaged area. I read this years ago, but cannot find the info again, not do many others seem to be suggesting this, so take that with a grain of salt. But, there are more who are pointing to vitamin c deficiency... vitamin c along with the proper amount of lysine, are essential to maintain healthy tissues, particularly vascular tissues. I am currently of the belief that it is true that the clogged arteries are not clogged from dietary intake of cholesterol, as the liver produces it, regardless and sends it off to do repair work and whatever else cholesterol is needed for. I don’t think it’s building up in the arteries because it has nowhere else to go and the liver is producing too much of it. In the end, There seems to be good reason to believe that the true root cause could be vitamin c deficiency. Of course overall balance of vitamins minerals etc is still important... and the substances many of us are consuming often and unwittingly or not so unwittingly, along with c deficiency are really the root cause of plaque build up, inflammation and insulin resistance are just signals that heart attack and stroke are in our future if we don’t adjust out diet and exercise habits. And brewer does a pretty good job of pointing out that lifestyle is number one in prevention and reversal. So while I think your question is fair and I have no answer... whatever the answer is, it does not do much in terms of getting to the real root problem to be solved. I am no expert and am always learning, so I mention these things in hopes that you might discover for yourself more information about this vitamin c connection and why cholesterol builds up in the arteries.

Thanks Dr. Brewer. Another great video. I was wondering if you could devote a video to Transient Ischemia Attack? I'm especially interested in your observations on TIA in otherwise healthy 50 plus adults with good blood work, no family history of CV disease, and healthy diet, exercise, supplement lifestyle. PS. Are statins ever a "preventative" option for older adults?
@PrevMedHealth5 жыл бұрын
Most docs recommend them as prevention if you have high cholesterol. I recommend them if you have plaque.
