I smiled throughout this whole video. My grand-mere was born in Grenoble. She lived to be 100 and was sharp as a tack until the day she died. She lived alone in her house. She went to the beauty shop every Thursday to get her hair done. She wore red nail polish every day her whole life. She never owned a pair of pants. She wore a dress and stockings and sensible shoes and special jewelry that was sentimental to her. Her dressing table was magic - skin creams, scented sachets and powders, lipstick, powder and rouge, and lovely perfumes. When she passed, the funeral home called me and said I needed to correct her age on her death certificate. They couldn't believe she was 100 because her skin was so beautiful and smooth. She was indeed the epitome of a French woman!

This is such lovely wisdom to share, Alice. In my 20’s, I was so lucky to be a cosmetic buyer for an American department store. We had a representative from Christian Dior visit for a training seminar. The first thing she told us was . . . “Mothers in France begin to provide guidance to a good skin care regimen to their daughters a little before or on her 13th birthday” . . . and . . . “French women keep their skin shielded from exposure to the sun.” I never forgot that advice. Our daughter is now bringing the wisdom to our grandchildren.

The biggest factor that makes French women so attractive (not ALWAYS beautiful but attractive and sexy) is their confidence. Confidence changes everything. When you truly LIKE yourself and think you are worthy of respect, other people follow your lead. It's in our DNA to believe people's opinions about themselves. French women SEEM to know their worth (or they do a beautiful job of faking it), and they carry themselves accordingly.

I love the mention of not using contours. I don’t contour either and I think a focus on lipstick, tidy brows and curled lashes is enough to elevate a look in my opinion :) Do you still contour with eye shadow? Or any contours at all like under cheek bones? Or zero contouring? And what about highlighting? I still like to highlight the inner eye or brow bones sometimes. And sometimes do eye shadow contours like darker in the crease etc. But I don’t bronze or contour my face.

Enjoyed this video Alice. Would love you to share more about your own transformation between living in the US and France - you were 'tanned' with blonde hair and now paler with dark hair. Obviously the latter is more chic and it would be fascinating to hear your thoughts on the transformation, the advice you received to get rid of the blonde etc. And in particular, some more advice on French hair care. French women tend to have shinier healthier hair - do they blow dry/air dry, is it the French diet, the amount of water they drink, the fact they don't tend to lighten their hair much? All the tips to help us mere mortals with frizzy unruly hair would be a great video.

I'm from Canada originally, and i remember when I went to university in France, I was surprised by the very strong emphasis on "nourishing" The skin, whereas I had always focused on cleansing and exfoliating it (to death). I didn't change at the time, but I have gradually switched to a gentler, more nourishing regime. I have never had the patience to do my hair, and it is super dry and curly, so i have always air-dried it because i can't stand when it feels like straw. I paid for a super straight blowout exactly once in my life. I thought it was very pretty, but by the time i drove home, it was wavy, and two hours later, my original curls were back. Never again!

American women pay a lot of attention to skincare. The spend a lot of money on what classifies as "quality skincare." In fact,, the skincare industry is doing amazingly in the US. The average American woman does not wear a lot of makeup. People notice these trends like contouring in trendy and touristy places, but in other places, they were classic wardrobes and wear minimal makeup. Alice, why do you always make some sort of demeaning comment about American women while comparing them with French women? Every country or nation has their own culture and beauty standards. For your country skinny might be considered attractive, but go to the Middle East…… for them a little fat on a woman’s body is healthy, beautiful, and attractive. Also, in most countries around the world, a natural hair style does not mean messy hair.

So funny reading through the comments and seeing how so many people glommed onto the "no tap water on the face" thing and ignored your most important point about having beautiful skin: It's what you're putting in your mouth!! Actually, I'm wondering if the tip to not use tap water on the face comes from the fact that the tap water is so horrible in Paris; at least it was when I was there in the mid-80's. I was there as a student and I drank it for a few days not knowing no one does (or did) and by day 3 my mouth tasted like rust and soap. I quickly made the change to drinking bottled water!

I stopped using chemical products including sunscrean, I changed my French diet to a more natural diet, and I'm much healthier now. I'm 41 and I am proud of not being addicted to these industrial products that pretend to make us beautiful. Nature, joy and love make us beautiful :0)

As a french woman I can't get my head around the notion that the world think we are especially beautiful...some of us are obviously but the majority ? Nah.

It’s not so much that French women are more beautiful, but it’s that they’re “bien dans sa peau”. They’re more comfortable with their faces/bodies/sexuality than many other women.

The Beauty is inside but having said so all European women (brits not really) are more focused in taking care of our skin. Then It's easy, very light CC or bb cream, blush, concealer, rimmel & Lipstick. Again all spplied very softly ❤❤❤

I don’t think that the average American woman contours. I’m from New York City and don’t know anyone who would even have the time 😊. Skin care is also huge where Im from. Though it’s true that we love French pharmacies.

Exactly! I'm a Canadian in Los Angeles and NEVER contour. Also, always always since I was a little girl SKINCARE first! I taught my daughters also, and SUNSCREEN is the most important skin care. Alice is somewhat harsh on Americans.

So many stereotypes and assumptions made here. I find women from every country and ethnicity attractive. Honesty, never thought to "aspire to be like a French woman" to be more attractive. I do aspire to learn, so thank you for the insight! Love from and American who has never contoured (and dont know anyone who does), puts a large emphasis on skincare and minimal makeup, and also doesn't self tan. To each their own! Whatever self care and style we choose, we're all beautiful in our own unique ways. ❤

As a french woman I agree with the message. There are attractive women everywhere and unattractive women everywhere (some french women are butt-ugly). Just aspire to be the best version of who you are.

It takes at least 6 months to have an appointment with a dermatologist in France and most of the time they don’t take new patient because we have a shortage. But our spas are excellent and if you pick a good one they will be able to advise you very well.

I find it funny. I'm from Arizona and I'm part German, Icelandic, Estonian, Scottish. Not French. But I do all of these things already. I just hate contouring and fussing over fake looks. I feel like I'm just watching my own routines. I had a Kevin Aucoin book at 13 and tried contouring in 1998 but it was hard. I also looked more pale in photos. Kevin is great with makeup, but I gave up.
