In the original there is a missable hidden block in the castle. In the remake they added some convenient toads later to reach it, if you fail your first attempt.

Those Toads are there in the original, but there's an invisible wall preventing the player from using them to jump up there. I, for one, am happy they changed that so it's no longer possible to end the game with 38/39 hidden chests forever just because you didn't know to jump on Toad's head and hop up there. What makes it worse is that players are on average not visiting all the places before going to the Castle, so wouldn't have met the Hidden Chest tutorial Toad lady under the item shop either.

I dunno…I kind of liked Princess Toadstool being shown as just a damsel in distress in the intro, as it made it a pleasant surprise when she turns out to be a party member later on in the game. The same can be said about Bowser being revealed to be a party member too.

I can't really blame them for dropping the charade for the remake, though. The original's nearly 30 years old and I think just about everyone is aware she's a party member by this point.

@@PrinceMallow I’m not so sure about that, as with the exception of calls for Geno in Smash, the game itself hasn’t really been in the public discourse at all. There are a whole lot of people that weren’t even born back during the game’s heyday, and just from looking up the game on KZbin I’ve seen a lot of people who have said they’ve never played it before or had played very little of the game, and the way they talk about it makes it pretty evident that they don’t know much about the game itself either.

You forgot that, in the original, the ChainChomps on the chandelier seem to literally be biting on the center of the chandeliers. In the Switch version, they're biting on a bone stuck to the chandelier, the implication being that the only reason they're holding on to the chandeliers is because they want the bone.

I think peach being introduced as a damsel in distress is good because then its a surprise when she becomes a party member. Sure now its no surprising since she's been playable in a bunch of things but at the time it was a nice surprise.

If you want to make a part 2; In the original during battles, the character portraits blink if you don't do a command. now in the remake they dont do it.

In the SNES version if you go into battle, the diamond layout buttons are laid out according to your region's standard so NA got purple and light purple buttons whereas Japanese got color buttons, in the remake the diamond layout buttons in battle just used the color buttons instead.

And now, for exemple, Super Jump, you'd press Y to open the menu and then Y again for timings and confirmations. In the remake they made it so that A still confirms and do the timed hits, that actually messed me up a lot in the beggining

Because there's no regional controller buttons this time, so they just used the Super Famicom colors. Hope Nintendo gets back to adding these colors, New 3DS had them and it's better than just having the controller's colors with a thin letter.

I know one of the bigger changes is in the Forest Maze, where they moved the narrow strip with the save block right before Bowyer. It looks like they also made it where when your party wipes, you don't retain any Exp. since your last save, making you unable to exploit leveling up with starmans.

One thing you should have mentioned is that they fixed the typo with the item "Heal Shell", which is now properly spelled "Heel Shell". So many people were confused in the original as to why Bowser's armor didn't do what its name suggested and didn't heal him.

I know the implication is that Peach was a damsel because of sexism and whatnot, but I think they did that to try to keep her inclusion in battles as a surprise. I was too poor back then to keep up with next gen systems like the Super Nintendo, but I imagine they were like "Yeah, so you make a team of Mario characters and new characters to save Peach and find the mysterious stars". They didn't want to give away that Bowser and Peach join you since that's kinda cool (I don't think Peach ever knew how to fight yet in other games, and obviously Bowser would never join your team as any Mario fan knows). So they did it that way by making her still look like the end goal (rescuing her). But since everyone who is interested in this game probably already knows she and Bowser join you, there was no "harm" in showing her fighting (especially since we have Peach fighting in Smash and Princess Peach).

Gotta remember that at that time, there was no way Peach would be a fighter until Super Smash Bros. Melee. Then again, she was a fighter in Super Mario Bros. 2 but it was all a dream so nothing really happened. It could be an indication that its meant as a surprise. Either that, or they know fans would be fed up with Peach being kidnapped so they change it a bit (even though she still gets kidnapped in the game itself). Later on, Peach shows to be a fighter in some of Mario titles, and this time its not a dream. Along with having her own game. So they have no reason to make her Damsel in Distress, instead just make her a peaceful, innocent princess.

Doki Doki Panic started as a prototype for SMB2 before getting shelved for not really going anywhere, then the code was reused to make DDP. Miyamoto actually worked on the engine that became DDP/SMB2 USA, but didn't work on the Japanese SMB2/The Lost Levels.

I believe you are correct. The intent was that even the fact that Smithy not Bowser was meant to be hidden which is why Exor doesn't show up even on the title screen until after the opening is complete. The US marketing dept did not get that or simply did not agree with the artistic approach when it came time so design the box and advertising so it was not as much of a surprise as it was intended to be.

I'm playing both games simultaneously and the funny thing is that despite the change in 6:39 , in the SNES version I went to the vault and got the items, while on the Switch I got distracted talking to a friend and only got the items when I returned to the castle later.

A change that I hadn't seen talked about -- the way to get to the casino has been tweaked. In the original, you had to jump three times in that pipe area to show the path, but there was no confirmation sound, so it was extremely difficult to find. However, in the Switch version there's a chime that's played that clues you in.

I may be crazy but I feel like several sound effects from Mario’s pantomime are missing. The worst change in my opinion was renaming "Frogfucious" into "Frog Sage". It was obviously a political choice and if you're going to do that, then at least come up with another creative name instead of "placeholder name Alpha XX-5" which is what it felt like. I kept thinking I was doing something wrong and returning him his pie or doing something else would actually name him. The Bruce Lee joke removal I also don't understand, maybe it's to do with marketing rights.

I always thought that was his name, there wasn't any notion that it was offensive to any degree when I was a kid. I personally thought of him as a Shaman, which I guess is offensive for appropriating tribe religions(?) or native Americans(?) I don't know why, but some of those dialogue changes, no matter how small, feel just a little less magical. "Attack the chain" rather than "aim for the chain" loses that little near-rhyme, "he knows about Action Commands" isn't as funny-sounding as "he knows about timed hits"... it's probably just my bias for the original, but I still miss them. Out of curiosity, is that first hidden item you need to jump on Toad for still missable?

Spoiler Alert In the SNES version, the boss you fight in the Mushroom Kingdom is named Mack and the boss you fight in Seaside Town is called Yaridovich In the remake, Mack is now known as Claymorton while Yaridovich is now known as Speardovich. .....for some reason.

Probably because they wanted the names to match Bowyer, for the sake of following the weapons theme. I've always assumed that Yardovich involved some sort of exotic weapon, but Mack the Knife is an extremely dated reference in this day and age, so changing it isn't the worst thing ever.

I got the SNES version for my 8th birthday and it was and has been for 27 years one of my top 3 favorite games of all time. As someone who never thought this day would come, I’d say that overall the remake is adequate - but the things they DID change are very subtly disappointing. It’s like meeting your hero in person but when you go to shake his hand it’s wet for some reason.

But I have played this game so many times that I know every dialogue word for word and I think when something is different, it just messes with the nostalgia. It’s honestly subtle enough that I’m probably the only one who cares.

Changing stuff for the sake of consistency. I love Bowser's modern sprite, but I was hoping for a 3D model of the old one: darker, grimmer, sharper teeth, bigger shell/smaller body. Modern Bowser is a buffoon, old Bowser was intimidating. This is a minor jab. Peach and Yoshi however? Hate 'em.

I’m loving the remake so far. It has put a nostalgic smile on my face the whole way through. Although, I didn’t like the fact that they changed some names around like Mack is now Claymorton, Yaridovich is now Speardovich and Magikoopa is Wizakoopa. Why would they do that? I don’t see the point of doing so. And feels like it is easier now if you use the Triple Combo thingy and when you time the hits perfectly, it hits the others around. So it really feels easier now and I hate that fact. Other than that, I’m loving the game so far. I’m currently heading to Land’s End. Can’t wait to see more!

Yaridovich is a not quite complete translation of the Japanese name. Yari in Japanese is Spear. They simply completed the translation.

Wizakoopa is just a regular Magikoopa isn't he? That name change doesn't make sense. If anything, since that particular Magikoopa is a boss fight, he should've been Kamek.

@@enochliu8316 I did not know that. Thanks for that. Still, since we grew up with those character names, I’m still calling them by their original ones. Because nostalgia. But don’t mind me. I also noticed they eliminated the spring that takes you to the start of the level in Bandit’s Way when you defeat Croco. But I didn’t realize that you could just pause the game and go back to the overworld or just fast travel to any place and I went back the way I came. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I never understood why Nintendo changed Princess Toadstool to Peach in the 90's. Toadstool is a mushroom, which is synonymous with the franchise. Peach is a fruit.

They did it to make it more cohesive with Japan, wherein she was always known as Princess Peach (like how Dr. Robotnik was always known as Eggman in Japan). Though I wish they kept it like how Mario 64 portrayed it, where Princess Toadstool was her title but Peach was her first name.

She's named after the colour pink, not the fruit. In Japanese Momo means both peach and pink. The localizers renamed her because as you say, it's off theme.
