For anyone who is "feeling betrayed" by the sponsorship, I hope that you also NEVER order vegan options at a non-vegan restaurant...or buy groceries at a non-vegan grocery store...or buy ANYTHING that comes from a non-vegan business...cause guess what? If you do, you're supporting animal cruelty. Do you see how ridiculous that line of thinking is? We're all out here doing the best we can in a non-vegan world. Sending love to you all.
@sh4mbles

There's a difference between individuals doing their best to make ethical choices and a creator with a large platform based on sustainability, veganism and ethics taking money from an environmentally damaging animal testing company and actively PROMOTING a shadier product. We should respectfully hold creators accountable and people have every right to question their motives!

I do agree with you, Zoe, I really do. However, if people purchase Ecover, doesn't that send the message to SCJ that consumers want Eco-friendly and cruelty free products? Perhaps even inspiring them to eliminate animal testing for other products in the future?

@@sh4mbles i think it s a great choice to take a eco friendly product so you promote the eco side of one of the big companies...

While I agree with your sentiment I think the issue I have is that as a consumer I am aware that shopping at my local grocery means I am supporting a company which sells animal products. It’s really shitty BUT at least I’m aware of these circumstances. Buying a specific brand that says it’s cruelty free and eco conscious while actually being owned by SC Johnson is deceptive and to promote this to people who don’t have this awareness is disingenuous
@PaulaJoW
@PaulaJoW 4 жыл бұрын
@@Karincl7 My feeling is that SC Johnson developed an "eco-friendly" line to cash in on the trend. They are not even close to being an eco company, nor do they strive to be.

Some People's reaction is the reason some people get deterred from Veganism While Ecover's parent company isn't ideal, their products have the leaping bunny which means their products specifically are not tested on animals So many brands have parent companies that don't necessarily have the best practices: ever bought anything by Alpro or Provamel? Well they're owned by Danone (they sell milk products) Beyond meat partly belongs to Tyson food From 2006 to 2017 Bodyshop was owned by L'Oréal (animal testing) Also, if you are being so picky, you shouldn't go grocery shopping in Sainsbury's or any other place that sells meat/unsustainable products, buy something from a Costa or pret, don't buy anything from superdrugs, Holland & Barret's, never eat in restaurants that aren't completely vegan etc While it's not ideal, buying those kind of products do show that there is a demand for more sustainable products My point being, people are trying their best and there is more nuance to all of this PS: ownerships of some of these companies might have changed this is just from the top of my head

I think everyone who comes to this channel wants to do the best they can, and buying from Ecover (in my opinion) doesn't affect whether you're vegan or not. It's up to Madeleine to decide who she wants to work with and the fact that she made this video with ecover doesn't (for me) change the way I think about her! I love her content. At the same time I do think it is helpful to have open and respectful conversations on where we draw the line for ourselves on what companies we support or not by buying their products. (without shaming people who are on the other side of that discussion!). I know many vegans who choose to not buy make-up from brands who's mother company sells in China. And the decision on what laundry detergent you buy sits (for me) more on that level. If you are in the priviliged position that you can afford Ecover you can also make the decision to buy faith in nature instead (for example). And I can't imagine how hard it can be to put yourself out there and make video's for all to see, and having to deal with this kind of criticism. Which is why I think we always need to remind ourselves that we are on the same side, and it's very easy to critise a public person putting themselves out there rather than looking at our own behaviour to see what we can improve ourselves. The supermarket comparison doesn't really hold up for me, because most people can't afford to not buy products at a supermarket. This is one of the reasons I love Madeleine's channel so much, her budget shops show a more accesible way to be vegan, and she doesn't shame people who have to buy products in plastic because they simply can't afford not to. The discussion on laundry detergent is slightly different, because you already need to have a certain amount of privilige to be able to buy. Anyway, I just wanted to put my two cents in! I hope Madeleine will continue making great content :).

and by buying vegan products from these companies, they will see that they are profitable and will make more vegan products. Until, ideally if/when all/most people are vegan; dairy, meat and egg products are no longer profitable and they will have no reason to make and sell them.

I live in a rural part of the US where it is very difficult/expensive to be sustainable. Some of the ways that I have been able to practice sustainability is by not having a dryer. My family thought I was crazy but it is working well for me. The added benefit is that I save money on my utility bill as well. I also like to knit and it is very expensive to use sustainable yarn for me. So what I do instead is go to yard sales in the summer and look for yarns. Since most of the time items that are not sold often end up in the landfill around here. Then when I really start knitting or need a gift for someone I have plenty of yarn for the project.
@crystalh1402
@crystalh1402 4 жыл бұрын
Tracy S for me, people knowing I knit has lead to being gifted yarn. Coworker found some yarn at a thrift store so she bought for me and I had fun making her slippers just because she bought me the yarn. You can be a crafter sustainably by using what could end up in landfill. I have some sheets I’m looking to make into a rag rug when they’re done going on my bed. 🙃

Thredup is amazing!!! They accept clothes for all occasions, shoes, bags, other accessories, and even sports bras. They only accept 40% of clothes for resale but everything that they pass on is sent to fabric recyclers. This means that your donated or consigned clothes won't be sent to a landfill, a burn pile, or one of the many other unsavory things that happen to donated clothes. This site gave me the peace of mind to start my decluttering process. Before I found them I was too anxious to declutter because I know that charity shops are often overburdened with donations. Most of the time they have so much stock that they can't sell it all and as I mentioned before there are a number of sad ends that discarded clothing could meet. Thredup is neat because you can be compensated for the clothes you send them if you send in your clothes on consignment you can earn money on the clothes they sell for you or you can choose to have them donate $5 per box of clothes you send to a charity of your choice both of these are great options! This site helped me with the eco-anxiety that decluttering brought on.

I feel like I need to throw some support in here. Ecover were the first brand that ever really gained any grounding in the UK as an ethical cleaning product. They have been on the scene for years, long before many smaller companies popped up in the mainstream. They are the reason I started switching to eco products where I could. Go back 5 years and they were pretty much the only brand in the supermarkets you could buy. They paved the way. Most consumers were completely clueless and only shopped in their supermarkets. That is still the reality today. They may be owned by a parent company who has different ethics to themselves but they really were the game changers. Ecover has been the springboard to more conscious shopping for many people and I think that should be celebrated.

My entire wardrobe, training clothes to nightgowns to shoes is from a secondhand online shop in Sweden. I always only buy the items between 1-3 pounds, the winter coat I got this year for 3 pounds is one of the best I ever had. And my friend always had a huge basket full of cut-up old t-shirts and sweaters as cleaning clothes, I too thought that was a great idea.

This video is great, thank you Maddie!! Does anyone have recommendations for cloth pads? I've researched a few brands, but always find contradictory reviews making it hard to decide on one to try. Also, I think a lot of people in the comments are missing the point of this video :/ I see lots of people defensively saying "It's not possible for everyone to do xyz" , and obviously people upset about the ad. In my eyes, the point here is to do what IS possible for you, and to make as much of a difference as possible, not get defensive that you can't do all these suggestions.

I’ve stopped using fabric softener and ‘Iron & Velvet’ make great eco friendly, plastic free, cleaning products which come in little sachets that dissolve in water. Making up a bottle of cleaning solution. Re-fashion is a afab online charity shop & they send clothing in paper packaging. You can also donate to them. Micolet is also great for second hand clothes, except it comes from Spain & in the usual plastic parcel bags. Going to try some shampoo bars this weekend, I’ve heard Ethique is good but Faith in Nature make them as well, so not sure. Finding plastic free food shopping difficult, especially for kids. What about this recipe? I use it for my washing and once you have a big pack of baking soda and a soap bar (can also be liquid green soap), you're pretty much set for a year if not more! ~~ 2 gallons hot water, 1 bar soap, grated, 2 cups baking soda ~~ Melt bar soap in a pan with just enough boiling water to cover. Stir until the soap is completely melted. In large pail or bucket, pour in two gallons of hot water. Add the melted soap. Add the baking soda, and stir well. Use 1/2 cup per load, or more for oversized or very soiled loads of laundry. Note: This recipe specifies baking soda, not washing soda.

I think if more people bought stuff like Ecover, then the big parent companies would see what people want and hopefully make more changes to their product to align with this. Avoiding these things will not help make any changes. Just sayin

For anyone that wants eco friendly and cruelty free laundry detergent alternatives, I highly recommend soap nuts. For those in the UK, you can buy them from www.soapnuts.co.uk. I’ve been using them for over a year and wouldn’t ever go back. They’re super cheap and last for ages. You can choose your own essential oil to add to the wash if you want to add a scent. They can also be used to make your own washing up liquid. ☺️

I don't need to add to the cacophony in the comments on Ecover. I use reusable cotton pads from Amazon to tone my face. Instead of using cleansing wipes, I take off my makeup with soap and water then wash again with soap and water plus a face cloth. I use these cotton panty liners, no noisy rustling of plastic. It attaches with a snap button. I just throw the panty liners and cotton pads in the washing machine and they're as good as new. Also, I also choose food and drink products in recyclable materials. For example, fizzy drinks in cans or glass bottles.

Love your enthusiasm for a sustainable life. But I did find one of your comments regarding a delivery of fresh fruit and veg to your door a bit contradicting . You said it will save on petrol, and carbon foot print, but what about the person who is delivering it you, surely they are not delivering it on foot, bike,donkey? Also its not always possible for people to have re-filable products especially like myself who has food allergies, the cross contamination would be too risky. And my final point is that I looked into Eco washing products and when I read some of their ingredients they contained wheat, no good for me, as that is one of my allergies.

It saves on petrol because it takes petrol to get produce to the store and them you drive to pick it up. Also, a lot of times it goes to warehouses before the grocery store which adds to petrol use. Also if the veggies/fruits are imported it's way more fuel uses than her local produce. The delivery driver will actually burning petrol/diesel in their engine more efficiently as it's not just one single less than 20km round trip. The delivered local produce box probably is less food waste than grocery stores as well.

My local food bank will take used make up, bread wrappers, crisp bags, anything labelled Terracycle, they get money to help the food bank by selling it to recycle centers. So if your local council won't take certain items look for other places that can recycle it.

I brought one of those takeaway coffee flasks because I absolutely hate those paper and plastic coffee cups from Costa, etc. But one huge problem? My anxiety. I’m so scared an anxious of asking the baristas to put my coffee in the coffee flask in case it annoys them, they judge me or it’s an inconvenience to them most importantly 😩

barista here ! my coworkers and I are genuinely grateful when people bring in their own cups. I put so many drinks in to go cups everyday; it's so wasteful and unnecessary. also many coffee shops will give you a small discount if you bring your own cup ! I highly doubt that any barista would be annoyed or upset by you trying to make a more sustainable choice :)

What about condoms? I know you can't have zero waste protection, only if you damage your own body with pills, hormones. But do you have a preferred brand, vegan friendly, biodegradable maybe? I know it's a delicate subject but loads of people do use them and they surely make a lot of waste. Along with a lot of brands that test on animals and even have animal parts in them. Love you xx

Aside from using eco friendly detergent, you might want to consider handwashing your clothes and drying them in the sun. People in the provinces of my country (the Philippines) do it that way and I’ve tried it recently. Less carbon footprint and the clothes are actually cleaner.

@taiyaduncker8823
@taiyaduncker8823 4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the brand and where you get it. Where I live there is a brand which is a liquid that you put water in to concentrate it but it is FLIPPING expensive and IMO not worth it but we are lucky to have a bulk buying store that does a 20% off day once a month for members and you just take your laundry tub/jar and fill it with their eco friendly detergent and it's a fraction of the price of normal store detergent and works even better. It's a good idea to do research on this if you are looking to swap. Some places will let you take a small sample to try too before you buy the item in its entirety.
