15 Things Every Saltwater Hobbyists Should Know
In this video i will go over 15 things every saltater hobbysist should know. I have learned many things over the years and here are just a few. First things on the list is having an ro/di water filter for 0 tds water. Next you always want to keep extra water on hand just incase something happens. Coral are living animals and you should make every effort to give them the correct living space. Always quarantine your fish for no less then four weeks. If you get ick in your main display remove all the fish and let it go without any for 8-10 weeks, this allows the parasite to die. Fish always look hungry so try to avoid the tempation to feed them every time you walk by the tank. Having a cleanup crew only hides the true problems within the tank. Always buil your rocks structures on the bottom glass before adding sand to increase stability. Using powerheads to break the water surface is a great way to increase ph and add oxygen to the reef. Using filter socks is a great way to remove detritus but make sure you remove them every day or every other day to prevent the breakdown of that detritus. Purchasing a aquarium controller like the neptune apex was the best thing i could of done in this hobby. It make like easy and i can leave my house for days without worry. Finally be patient and enjoy the hobby nothing good happens over night.

great video man always gets me when people ask me "do i really need an RODI unit? I mean my tap water is drinkable." Like really do you live in your tap water 24/7. Would you want impurities and chemicals in the everyday air that you breathe. I think people should think more about giving there fish and coral the best possible life you can provide since you are already taking them out of there environment for your own enjoyment. (unless they are tank raised that is)

Great informational video. 🖒Travis. I've been in the marine side of this hobby now for 1.5yrs after keeping new world cichlids for close to 20yrs and have learned a lot, some by trial & error & most by research and aligning yourself with with people who are knowledgeable in this industry. you're so right when you say to get the right equipment instead of trying to go cheap. you'll pay for it in the long run. keep up the good work...

I really like how frank and honest your advice is. I will definitely be following your videos from now on. I have one question, do you have a recommendation on how big a quarantine tank should be? The biggest fish I will be getting is the one spot fox face
@FishOfHex
@FishOfHex 7 жыл бұрын
A quarantine tank isnt something they are going to live in long enough to grow out of. It would be safe and do the 1 in per gallon. You really just need to provide a place for the fish to hide via pvc and do water changes to keep waste down.

Maybe add another point, 16 should be research before any livestock purchases. Lots of people buy on impulse, often to the detriment of either the purchase or an existing inhabitant. Classic example is adding a fish that loves a shrimp or 2 and the tank already has a shrimp ... Loving your vids man, going to subscribe.

I used water conditioner instead of RODI, is it still safe? the fish seem to have stayed alive for a year so far so I think it is safe.
@erect4e369
@erect4e369 6 жыл бұрын
Dyn4mic Universe water conditioner actually RAISES your tds so it is actually effectively making it worse than if you didn’t put the conditioner in at all. Conditioner should only be used for freshwater. Try not to use tap, Rodi is best but if not available or too expensive I would buy distilled water at the grocery store instead.

I'm looking to set up a nano for my first reef. Probably 20 gallons or less. I notice a lot of people speak of bi weekly water changes. On my cichlid tank I do twice weekly water changes so I'm wondering, is there any detriment to doing this on reef tanks? Thanks to any input! 😎
@FishOfHex
@FishOfHex 7 жыл бұрын
when it comes to saltwater we look to getting a % of water out either weekly or bi weekly. when it comes to that % it depends on what you plan on growing via soft, lps or sps coral and how much you feed. to keep it simple aim to do %20 of your total water volume every other week. or do 10% weekly and if you really want do two %5 weekly. Doesnt really matter just get the %20 Bi weekly amount done.

#16. Realize that having a bare bottom tank tanks away from what the whole experience of looking at a coral reef in your own living space. Just because you're obsessed with having perfect parameters to the point that you would cheat yourself of what a reef looks like, does not make you a successful reefer. Yeah, I said it.

Great channel, thanks for the video. Wish I was following all of those commandments, but I'm doing my best. My worst offense is patience since I am getting back into the hobby again after a 10 year break. Without patience, you tend to break some of the other rules. So far no major issues, but I'll admit I've been lucky. As far as things I am doing right, I did with a BRS 6 stage RODI and lately added a booster pump which is a game changer as far as how much water I can make. Also, I'm filling up my Ace Roto Mold 65 Gallon Vertical Dome Top (VT0065-23 from Rural King for $110 delivered) right now for the first time. Also have money set aside for a generator, just need to go pick it up. I live on the gulf coast, so I should have had one a long time ago anyway. Very interesting tip about mixing up the dry salt before adding it to your water, I hadn't heard about it settling before but it makes sense. Thanks again and looking forward to your next video!

idky ppl think just sitting a fish in a qt will get rid of their disease rather they have it. qt with copper always, rather u see it or not. a fish might not be as stress in a qt than he would be in DT so he wouldn't show signs. then when he's in the dt and he's showing signs, its already too late.

If you have a healthy fish they will tolerate ich. You need a great pet store as well who quarantine there fish visit ask to see there quarantine if a good store they will be proud to show you! Over lighting affects algae as well.
