Instead of getting a nice pair of bespoke shoes and having them conditioned and re- soled and having them for years; poor people buy tons of cheap shoes and throw them out. They could have saved up for a low end pair of bespoken shoes and had them for years if taken care of. The poor never use shoe trees. Another pet peeve is when poor people come to work with clothing not starched or ironed, and all wrinkled. Even dirt poor in India have pressed and non wrinkled clothes. Also, even Untouchables in India sweep their property fronts with corn husks; but USA poor have filthy houses. Takes no money to keep your house clean.

I kinda disagree with that "rich use debit & poor use credit" statement. True wealth is measured in credit ownership; a good record. Dividing an expense into smaller payments not only allows for more cash disposal, but it also builds up a credit score only the poor wish they had. Some credit cards give nice rewards for their use and on-time payment avoids interest rates/fees. Only the rich know how, which, and when to use credit. Poor people think it's free money.

Whomever thought up the script for number 15, clearly does not have the appropriate capacity and therefore authority to make judgments about people choosing not to "snitch". One of my favs from Joni is called "Sex Kills", she put it this way: "Is justice just ice? Governed by greed and lust? Just the strong doing what they can And the weak suffering what they must?" Just from a basic intellectual standpoint, it is--more than possible--but likely, that multiple people in general choose to do one same behavior for multiple different reasons. A large enough number of police officers, down through the decades, have tended to vary in their community relations and building of trust among those who collectively vest them with authority to maintain law and order. It is naive to assume these officers' approach is not less cooperative and courteous and dignifying and even humanizing in some zip codes than in others. In certain neighborhoods people can only afford to live 3 houses down from bonafide thugs who present immediate clear and present danger if you don't mind ya own. I have personally seen how there are certain neighborhoods police officers don't go or get dispatched to; people who live there are decidedly then those whom they refuse to protect and serve, puts a whole different spin on "protection racket". It's not always as cut-and-dried as "Obstructing justice"; aint that many assurances that can be made, what we gonna do put the whole 30 blocks of families in Witness Protection? If you have never had to do that kind of survival math.... I think about the old saying in NOLA for example: "If I caint help you I won't hurt you" and I think about how Batman told his old Master on the train "I'm not gonna kill you; but I don't have to save you." Someone with whom you grew up who becomes a godmother or godfather to your child and then at some point chooses a criminal life that puts your kid through Cornell.... "Crime breeds more crime": um, crime is not a person. Crime is a result of desparation and/or a debased morality and low income does NOT mean low character. Have you ever heard of "Dog Whistle Political language"; how versed are you on the historical hypocrisies? This statement without qualification and contextualization is criminally simplistic for several powerful reasons, but off top: it doesn't factor who is defining "Criminal"; it doesn't factor what is set up to penalize some over the same product that others pass around on a Tiffany silver tray as party favors; it doesn't factor legitimate legal options for gainful employment that are closed off for many due to unjust and just prejudicial preferences--like a Black Boy trying to get hired in Koreatown. Opportunities have gotten a lot better because of the Internet, and I am very encouraged by how Millennials want to make REAL, SUSTAINABLE CHANGE to the codified practises which gave America its worst reputations, but that doesn't happen by denying what was deliberately, legally done to create the game and then lock specific people groups out of the reaources to win said game, and done to dehumanize them to point of irreparable brokeness. So you see, not everything legal is legitimate. I'm at an age and stage, having, looked at life from both sides now--American Version of Poor and Rich in my own life and steadily climbing to true wealth so I can help other people--and since I grew up witnessing the social and structural and political changes affecting whom you call "The Poor" I say, here particularly, the wiser approach would be to limit your commentary on neighborhood dynamics you haven't been close to let alone lived. I can tell you from an insider prospective why some neighborhoods I grew up in are STILL not Communities to this day. Something too many of the rich think it's normal to do, which the poor think is strange: pass parental and presumptuous judgment of the personal character of the human beings who happen to occupy a certain f-d up neighborhood, and then go further to start prescribing when they've never been harassed, robbed, abused or even killed by the ones they so simplisticly would preach to "Ghetto dwellers" about cooperating with. If you weren't born into a family of gangbangers and criminals or gangsters (some of whom--ironically--wear $10,000 suits and some whom are even in a position to make law that defines "criminal") or something like that, y'all should pretty much just leave that topic alone. There is plenty of behavior that is un-policed that is not just criminal in terms of its anti-social and societal impact, but also is unconscionable in terms of human dignity. I say be more careful because what you call "a mentality" is sometimes just simple fact about circumstance people intend and even a have a plan to make sure is only temporary. One simply cannot make qualified and properly contextualized commentary unless that person, like me, was there and lived it when my city burned, and witnessed the unjust and oppressive antecedents--you not from nat, you not 'bout dat. OJ got away with the unconscionable because my ethnic and culture groups were blinded with a bias informed by--to say the least--those antecedents, all they cared about was an emotional, historical moment of their demoralized dignity being avenged and restored--even if only by proxy: that is a desperation "The Rich" who criticize and judge and get all parental, but can't tell anybody anything about and have no personal memories about any of those intersections, likely have never known--an infinitesimal few have forgotten and are completely oblivious (the Cristal washed it away). K, I came with many paragraphs here, but you all read books so I don't think it burdensome and this just happens to be a topic about which I am super passionate. Good Day

UPGRADE What poor/middle class families say to their kids: "Money doesn't grow on trees!"
@ntnrocket14 жыл бұрын
Some great stuff here. 6. The back charging for ATM use and minimum amounts--This is one of the worst things the poor have to go through. They are told to stop being financially invisible and get your money in the bank and start paying bills through the bank, and it is cheaper than getting a money order made out and things like that. But when they do, they are sailing too close to the wind and dip under their $1500.oo min (Wells Fart-go) or whatever it is, and get charged. What is that saying to poor people, 'Oh you can do this, but you HAVE to have enough.' 10. Having more kids than you can afford--This is a mindset I think. Why the fudge would people have kids way too young and raise them unless they just think they can't do any better?? And I think that comes from just lack of financial education and a lack of desire to try to get it. (Now, OF COURSE this doesn't apply to everyone who had kids young, so don't start sending me flame comments and getting all enraged.) 15. Not calling the cops on a crime---So the term 'dropping a dime' on someone has history to it if you think about it. Before the days of home phone use and cell phones, people had to make calls on public pay phones. After phones got into more homes in the late 40s and early 50s, if you still wanted to report someone to the cops, it was wise to do it from a pay phone so if there was a snitch in the Police Department, and most big city departments were more crooked than a dog's hind legs, he couldn't tell the bad dude it was you who make the call.

No rich person uses a debit card. Rich people use credit cards poor people use debit cards. CC cards - They build credit when used - Offer perks like cash or airline miles - Some cards allow you in exclusive clubs - Allow you to contest wrongful charges - Let your cash earn some small interest while it is in the bank.

5: I agree 99% except in little menial things. I hire almost everything out anymore myself because my time is worth way more than that. One thing that was an exception; I own a kitchenaid mixer that my wife and I have had for 10 years. It was starting to leave a dark grease spot on the counter every we used it. Thus there were 3 options: 1- Buy a new Kitchenaid mixer at $379 plus tax 2-Send it into Kitchenaid to have the grease taken out, replaced, mailed back in about 1 month+ and spend around $125+ for the maintenance and then around $30 for shipping: so; $155 3- $9.99 and 15 minutes of my time - Unscrew 7 screws, pull top off, scoop off grease, put new grease in, close lid. Complete Even at $250,000 per year or around $120 per hour, it still was a smart economical decision to do that myself. Else: ALUX YOU ARE SO CORRECT!!!!!!!

Other things that are strange for the rich, yet normal, for the poor: IN THE PHILIPPINES: -(For students in a boarding house): washing their clothes/uniforms at least once a week, to keep them clean. Rich kids have multiple clothes & uniforms to choose from. For the poor, uniforms can be expensive, because most uniforms in our country are tailor-made. Most schools don't sell uniforms. They just give you the guide of how the uniforms look & how it should be sewed. The ultra rich kids have a maid or nanny living with them in the boarding house, to do menial tasks such as laundry & preparing meals. -Working a part time job, while in school. Rich parents only want their kids to focus on studying, instead of working for minimum wage. If rich kids need extra money, all they have to do is ask their folks. For extra cash, or an extra amount on their bank account. I'm blessed enough to be born in the upper middle class. 😅 But I do know what life is like, on both sides of the spectrum. Like Alux said, it's complicated. Work hard & keep learning, kids. 💋

She was 100% right until the snitching topic. She’s conflating two different things. In “poor” areas, many citizens do not cooperate with police because out of fear of repercussions by the criminals they would be telling on, and in most cases the police can’t save you. Also, because of corruption and police brutality, many people in bad areas don’t want to associate with cops at all. Cops aren’t brutalizing rich people because they’ve got money, lawyers, power and connections. So there’s an element of distrust there to say the very least. It’s not some crazy belief system; it’s born of real life experiences....I just wish people who haven’t really had those experiences wouldn’t subscribe to the notions of the people who have had them. And “snitching” doesn’t apply to non-criminals. I believe that police are there to serve and protect and therefore regular people should absolutely call the police or help with investigations when they can. Now when it comes to the CRIMINAL element....THAT is where “snitching” comes into play. There is a belief system; a code. And the code is “If you decide to involve yourself in illegal activities then you do so of your own free will and at your own risk, and you understand that your actions can and likely will lead to prison or death. No one’s forcing you to choose a life of crime. You chose it, and therefore YOU should stand up and face the consequences of your choices and actions if law enforcement catches up to you, without bringing down others to save your own skin.” The paradox, however, is that accepting a life of crime is also excepting that being snitched on is one of the risks you run. 😂 The other part of the code is that criminals police themselves aka “You chose to be a criminal and disobey the law, so don’t call the law to fix the problems you brought on yourself.” The sad thing is we have this new generation of kids who do not have to live the street life or who just flat out DONT live those lives, turning around and trying to mix the “Street code” in becuase it seems cool to them. The generation before them (my generation) did not do enough to keep that way of thinking completely off their radar. The real truth is, most real gangsters don’t want to be gangsters. They actually hate the lifestyle and envy the rich people who can wake up every day without all the headaches. What I’m trying to say is....I love Alux (;

Upgrade! I recently gave a supervisor this book by Ruby Payne and charts in it for him to understand what he was seeing and upset in coworkers and how to help/mentor them to change their poverty based cultural behaviors. I also regularly teach it to my students. amzn.to/2xcM8wO Things I notice Poor people do that (I) Rich don't or find confusing. 1. Being in relationships that are unhealthy or dissatisfying because the person is bringing in money for the rent, bills, etc.. As broader pin point the mention of people hanging outside---I was on a date with a guy and he was going on and on about his family sitting out on the stoop on summer evenings. And he was like wasn't it like that for you? I was like no---we had a porch when we moved into a house in a gated community and before that we had terraces on high rise apartments...or we just went places, we never sat outside on the stoop. The one time we did, or a couple of times with my cousins and their family I remember a birthday cake fight outside and then another time one of my cousins was shot and killed up the block. I often have to remind people that yes, I'm Black but I didn't grow up in poverty. That same guy I was dating when we would go out would stand shoulder to shoulder with me when I went to teh ATM, I thought it was odd but then later I noticed other couples doing it---at ATMs, stores, etc ad i realized Poor People act as 1 Hive mind and move as groups in those exchanges. 2. Rarely have time fillers or hobbies. I notice lots of Poor people playing on their phones as a time filler. I go back and forth on trains here in Manhattan and Brooklyn. From home in Manhattan to projects I work on in Brooklyn I literally notice teh appearance and disappearance of books. The more ethnic a neighborhood the less books read on the train. The more integrated Middle Class/Higher and White, the more people have a book on the train, it's like a peeking library to check out what people are reading and people make comments to each other. 3. Being able to write well. I've had poor Bronx office admins complain about my cursive writing--she distinctly called it "chicken scratch" twice---which is funny because I write in cursive 99%of the time and I occasionally wonder if it's illegible to my own eye but I get compliments---even on the train when I'm writing---about my script writing. Further, being about to write an observational report, knowing how to spell words or look up the correct spelling---I notice in jobs I've had outside of education where there's more middle to lower class people horrible syntax, grammar, spelling presented on a professional level (more than typos) and I understand why people aren't promoted.

I love your sharing. I've always wondered about people's awful grammar and spellings too. They just don't bother. Now it makes sense: they're usually the ones from poorer backgrounds where being as correct as possible is seen as snotty or a show off. Also, I notice poor people or those raised up poor, tend to use crass words and impolite expressions more often. They also tend to be very envious and judgmental.

U black? Lmao hey I'm Mexican man, and to be brutally honest most indians, Mexicans, and African Americans have been in this situation. A majority of them. Sad truth is a lot of races are uneducated and that's just a truth if we were more understanding of the fact that it's all about a persons character and brain than the color of their skin we wouldn't be getting offended over race but over weak and strong minded individuals...independent of color most whites got it made... That's not saying being white is = to success but they managed to educate their own race and get ahead. Us minorities need to wake the fuck up and do the same for the people of our own race

Most if not all of the things mentioned apply to me, sadly. I grew up in an unimaginable poverty that I just wish I could just forget every single thing that we had to go thru to survive. Tbh, I cry whenever I remember the old days, so I'm doing my best to move forward. #upgrade

“I bought a house, it's a two bedroom house, but I think it's up to me to decide how many bedrooms there are. This bedroom has an oven in it. This bedroom has a lot of people sitting around watching TV. This bedroom is over in that other guy's house.” - Mitch Hedburg

Upgrade on #9 getting creative... Spaghetti in our house was about 3-4 pounds of pasta, 2 cans tomato paste, equal parts water a Shillings flavor packet and about 1 pound of hamburger. If you wanted protein in your meal, you hoped the pot was sitting closest to you. It wasn't until after getting educated in the Navy and becoming an electronic engineer, I found out what Spaghetti was supposed to be like at a nice Italian restaurant. I also learned that squash doesn't need to be cooked into a goo that runs all over your plate!

#15 come on "Snitches get stitches" but you're right Alux Lady. (I always report suspicious activities especially in my new clean neighborhood) But there's also corruption in the upper crust too (who buys politicians?)
