To add something else about your character, the other characters CARE about your character. They worry about you, they struggle when you are forced to go into dangerous situations even though you're the only one who can, they are relieved, excited, and seem happy to see you. You aren't just 'a hero', you're their friend or THEIR hero. It really makes a big difference when you matter to the story and to the characters.

And importantly, it also works the other way around. They care about WoL and WoL cares about them. When... you-know-who dies, it left a permanent scar on who Warrior is as a person, enough that other characters notice it. They are not 'toons'. They are full fledged characters.

@@Drakhesh That death affects the WoL so much that it plays a prominent role in the Dark Knight 60-70 quest line. That death _haunts_ the WoL, as do the deaths of all those they befriend. Hell, the character development shown in all the class/job quests is amazing.

Another thing to add about the Dev Approach to FFXIV In Stormblood they saw how we really liked jumping on a bunch of random objects like mountain goats in Kugane just to try to reach the highest point. They saw a huge number of players jumping up Kugane Tower and encouraging others to get to the top, something they thought a lot of people wouldn’t do or take time out of their day to try to accomplish. And from that small thing they saw, they gave us a bunch of jump puzzles in the game from the seasonal event of the moonfire faire to implementing them into the gold saucer.

A negative from that would be that you can't customize your jobs at all in FFXIV. No talents, no gear set bonus that affect spells, Nothing. While it's great that you can play every job on one character since let's face it, alts are annoying but with everything being so homogenized there is nothing that separates me as a reaper from this other reaper. Gear is exactly the same and the game isn't partically gear base so that loses my motivation to do end game. The only way you can really distungish yourself from others would be cosmetic stuff like glamours and mounts but why would I play a subbed base multiplayer game if I was only into that. Might have played the Sims instead if I were into that kinda a thing.

1 + 12 (and 6 to a lesser degree) also have this incredible synergy: I can imagine WoW fans who haven't tried XIV snapping back with, "Who cares about your character's EYE color? When are you even gonna see it? How important are the folds on your outfit, really?" BRUH. Let me tell you a thing. You are IN THE CUTSCENES. Your lovingly crafted character design is in, roughly, ALL the cutscenes. Your sweet or silly or badass outfit is providing context to what kind of person you are as You Perform The Narrative. Blizzard doesn't really care about story that much because the players also don't seem to care much anymore. Some of them come to try FFXIV and skip the story immediately partly because they are like "it's probably shit anyway, not that I care, just let me do stuff." WoW sets the bar looooow in that regard. I played that shit for a decade and it had its high points, but they were low in comparison to FFXIV and it never improved. The only characters I remember from that game are the Hearthstone class leaders and some legendaries because I watch Brian Kibler lmao.

@@SMNtheNight The thing is, the players don't care about the story BECAUSE Blizz doesn't make it worth caring about. Not the other way around. They just haven't experienced something like that yet so they don't know if they'd like it or not. A lot of peoples' only experiences with mmos is WoW so they think having mediocre story is par for the course.

Yeah one of the big problems with WoW's story is that each expansion ends up being its own self-contained story. There's might be a bit to lead into the next but really it's a story all of its own. FFXIV, as a contrast, seems to be doing arcs so we're dealing with ascians, Zodiark and the Garleans now then maybe another arc after that. On the whole it means the entire story feels much more connected to itself and like it has much more effort put into it, while WoW might have a great story in one expansion but then the next is bad and completely unrelated.

I got so attached to the First that doing my Source-based lvl 80 Job quests actually felt odd. Then as I went and did them, I noticed a pattern: every single one mentions deeds you've done and involved people you've met. That's when I realized why they existed: to start re-grounding the player back in the Source. The writers _knew_ players would get attached to the First and so they created these quests to help re-orient the player to the Source.

They've also made it a lot "easier" on themselves by focusing on the story. Please note that I'm not saying that story is some sort of cop-out. If anything, it's the more complex way to run a game like this. (One of my long-standing complaints about WoW is that most of the story happens in a novel somewhere; it legit angers me that I have to pay for a side novel if I want to fully understand the story in that game. There are random side characters/relationships/rivalries that just spring into being in game, and then when I go looking for their history, oh, I had to read X novel. It is cheap and gross. Anyway!) My point is that focusing on the story means that they aren't reinventing the wheel with some ridiculous borrowed power scenario every expansion, that breaks the game and makes everything buggy, so that the devs need to devote inordinate amounts of time to making the new systems play nice with what's already there. Focusing on story is more complex in terms of designing the gameplay experience, but is much easier from a code standpoint. You introduce a good villain with agency and dimensions, and you DON'T have to worry about how WHM is going to play all of a sudden. It's just a smarter way to run a railroad.

As someone who plays and loves both of these games for a lot of different reasons, this was a bitter pill to swallow, but she's right in almost all these examples. It breaks my heart to see Blizzard in the sorry shape it's in these days, but I'm fully aware that this is a problem they've made for themselves internally. They have the tools and the knowledge to turn their development and public image around, just not the interest, and I doubt they'll ever find it. Having played Warcraft since 2005, there's always going to be a special place in my heart for it. I still play to this day, in fact, and I doubt any other game, even something like FF14, will have quite the profound impact on me that WoW did. With that being said, Shadowbringers is the best -current- MMO experience I can say I've had in a while, and really set the bar insofar as structure and presentation. It's a difficult feeling to express, I know; saying "nothing will be the same as X" and then admitting "this new thing just blew me out of the water". I guess I just want to not be so binary in the things that I enjoy these days. Thank you for making this video, even if it did remind me of some of the stains on my favorite hobby. WoW devs let certain class abilities stay overpowered despite glaring examples where nerfs are needed. When Ghostcrawler was at Blizzard, frost mage stayed overpowered. now, for some reason or other, the covenant ability balance druids get (convocation?) that one shots people in pvp (some times two shots) has been broken since Shadowlands launched and there's no sign it'll get nerfed. It actually got a buff recently. This is one example of how tonedeaf and arrogant the WoW devs/management are. They don't give a shit about the playerbase, they do what they want and you can either like it or hope there's a big enough outcry that it affects their income enough to convince them to care. I started playing WoW in vanilla and I've always felt like Blizzard thought the players were scum, like they thought of us as peons. Not once did I get that vibe from FF14. I feel more at ease enjoying the game and I can tell the areas where the devs showed love to the players.

This is a followup to my video "10 Things FFXIV Could Take From WoW" : kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXjEpn6MpdZgj7M A quick note on my last point regarding QA: I have no doubt the Blizzard devs are busting their asses on QA for WoW. But in the wake of massive layoffs and wage protests, it’s clear that Activision isn’t giving them the compensation or time they need to do their jobs. PTRs and Betas can be useful tools for developers to test their game broadly, but even with all that additional QA help from players (who, I might add, take their voluntary testing work VERY seriously), WoW is far from balanced, and major bugs and lag continue to be an issue. FFXIV does not have that extra help from players on a PTR or Beta, but it runs much more smoothly overall. I worked QA for EA on games like The Sims 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur, so I have nothing but sympathy for the people at Blizz doing QA, especially in crunch time. Just wanted to clarify that my salt is towards Activision and not the people on the ground floor.

Something that doesn't get enough appreciation is the sound design of FFXIV. Every class has a unique sound profile that further enhances their feel - and it takes some serious SFX chops for every single ability in the game to sound different enough that I can tell what abilities are being used during a hectic fight, from the "DRRR-BOOM" of a machinist's Drill, the repeated "Fwaaah" of the black mage casting Fire4s, the high pitched "SCREE" of a dragoon using Stardiver, or the metallic ringing of a samurai readying Midare Setsugekka- or even the "Shing" of a Superbolide going right off after the soft "bwoom" of a Benediction. Meanwhile, in WoW, you have a single casting sound for nature magic, a single casting sound for fire magic, a single casting sound for dark magic, a single casting sound for light magic... It's underappreciated how much these unique sound profiles contribute to helping each class feel different. If everything was the same but all the melee dps made the same sound when they hit something, I don't think they'd feel very different at all, despite the obviously unique playstyle of each.

I honestly don't get the hate for Zenos. It's like people take a surface level glance at him and go "Oh, evil crazy guy just being evil and crazy for the sake of being evil and crazy." He's a sociopath who grew up in an environment where the only things that matter are your position and your strength. On top of that he was also part of the royal family, so he likely didn't have any real friends and he is extremely strong. And he considers you to be his only friend. And THEY are all very unique characters themselves. Moenbryda was gone before 2.0 ended but not only does she get brought up frequently by the other Scions but it still sting a little to think about how cool she’d think everything is that youve done since. Story and music have always been the shining pillars that make FF games so special. The gameplay has never been anything top of the line, but the narratives have always held up, even FF13 that I disliked the gameplay enough not to play it again, had amazing music and a good storyline as a motivator. FF14 with it's individualised boss battle themes for dozens of different encounters and the story lines (HW and ShB especially) ticks both FF main boxes easily.

I took up FF14 a few days ago and came from WoW. Some of the first things I noticed were the fact that my class actually feels...finished? I like Paladins, I love tanking, and one of the first things I got was Iron Will which, if you played BC or Wrath, that's Righteous Fury. I immediately loved the fact I had to pay attention to a simple little buff because it made my class better. From there I got a taunt, AoE attacks, lots of damage mitigation, I have so many tank-essential things and so many buttons to press! My Paladin on WoW is just....toss shield to gather, lay consecration on the ground and spam an AoE attack. I don't have much damage mit because I don't really need any, nothing hits that hard. Moreover, CLASS QUESTS! They explain why my job matters, what it's origins are 9at least for pally) and what the motives of my class are. The characters are interesting too, they talk to you more than just "Go get me stuff". I've gotten to NAME my mount--a small touch but makes everything feel more personal, and Minfilia is probably my favorite character and I would RISK MY LIFE to protect her. FFXIV devs communicate with players about issues and what they're doing to fix them. Server having issues? It's posted on the Lodestone and tweeted out by them as soon as they become aware of the issues. I remember a Command Company Limit Break exploit that went for two months (?) or so, and how the devs fixed the issue and explained (in detail) what went wrong with their response and how they'll fix it going forward. This goes all the way back to Yoshida taking control of 1.X and through the launch of ARR, too. There were major server crowding issues and instanced content problems at launch that required new servers. SE released a statement from a tech that explained what was happening and why it was taking time to fix; it involved ordering the new server blades (if in stock), testing them when they arrive, installing the server-side version of the game, testing said installation, and then integrating the new blades into the system. It made a huge impact on me (obviously).

A couple things that I didn't see anyone mention in the comments yet.. Now, I'm more in the FFXIV camp and I actually enjoyed it tons. There are maybe a couple things WoW does a bit better though (I may actually be talking more in the context of Classic but I reckon this applies to Retail as well). First one you actually mention in the video. While I don't disagree that Aetherites are super convenient for travel, I do hate having loading screens and especially not being able to run out of a city without a loading screen / area transition in between. If there's one thing WoW did good from the very beginning, it made the world feel big. I know the newer FFXIV areas are much bigger but they're still separate zones whereas WoW really feels a world where you walk from one edge of the world to another. Travel is a related concern but having to actually spend a bit of time travelling does help enforce the size of the world. That said, my point is not travel but the way the world feels connected. Second thing I think WoW actually does better is ... gear. Not visuals but the gear itself. It's faaaaaar more interesting in WoW in my opinion. You have gear that makes no sense, you have gear that has odd stats, you have good items , you have bad items.. you have it all. FFXIV gear is *super* symmetrical to a point of being extremely boring. Every new tier, there is a set for each class where the stats are essentially exactly the same. Every new tier, there's a best weapon that you get from the last tier boss and it's ... just the same for every bloody job, just better stats than the last tier's weapon. Yes, I realize in WoW min-maxers always find the Best Weapon(tm) anyway but at least in WoW it *feels* like you have the option and it doesn't feel like every single weapon is copy paste from last tier with updated stats. If I could somehow bring a couple things from WoW into FFXIV, I think these would be my choices.

Completing quests in WoW feels more like crossing Checkpoints in a race. In FFXIV, it feels like you've had an impact on the world you are in. Final Fantasy feels like an authentic world, with characters, places, and things that all appear to be a part of that world. In WoW, it feels like a spastic, comedic attempt at a "serious" world, but really, just comes off as silly, cheap, and ultimately, same old, same old.

@palladiamorsdeus

@@qwertyb18 Okay, and? I feel like you don't really have a point here and you're just flappin' yer gums in some weird attempt at defending WoW. The class balance is not debatable in the least, due to the way XIV's classes are structured it is much easier to have them being close in line to each other. Contrast and compare WoW's three specs per most classes ((Even if they have simplified it to the nth degree)) and you have a nightmare of balancing needs. Now I am actually not saying that's a negative thing overall, personally the one thing I prefer about WoW is the level of options you have within each class, but it does mean that one is relatively simple to balance and the other is not, and the end results show that very plainly.

@@palladiamorsdeus "flappin my gums" you just replied with a thesis statement. All I'm saying is WoW has a constant stream of battle reports and FF14 has next to no parse info. That's a huge counterclaim. Until we see something empirical, you don't have an objective argument.

Made the jump myself a couple months ago - almost didn't stick with it, the opening 20-30hrs of ARR content felt like a slog, but things quickly picked up and every day I discover new things that the WoW team couldn't hope to execute even half as well. Crafting in particular makes the WoW equivalent feel like a zero-effort early access asset flip - the mechanics and progression are light-years ahead in FF14, and the side storylines that accompany each discipline are just as well written as the MSQ. I shed actual tears during the lv50 mining quest final cutscene, I shit you not. And now I'm going back to the beast tribe rep grind I was working on - I'm helping some featherless birds build a massive airship! Srsly, I wouldn't even play WoW for free anymore.

Controller support and UI. I can use a controller and still be able to heal endgame content. If you think kb&m is better, you can use that too. The thing is FFXIV gives you a choice. WoW, there is no choice. If anything my XIV rotations on a controller are more complicated than the 4 button rotation on my Ret pally on Nzoth.

Zenos is awesome. Before him, we took out our enemies with not much resistance. But the story of Zenos is like two unstoppable forces colliding, us vs him. Zenos lived for that rush, can't say the same for WoL though lol. SB had a good focus on foils. WoL/Zenos, Lyse/Fordola, Yotsu/Domans

As a character Zenos is very simple which frankly is fine, but I always found the impact he had on the more complicated characters more interesting. People are terrified of him and the likes of Fedola and Yotsuyu wouldn't be as interesting as they are if they weren't driven by what he left in his uncaring wake. If Gaius van Baelsar was still in charge of Ala Mhigo then Fedola would have turned out different as I doubt he'd tolerate the sort of people in his court who'd look down on those who proved themselves.

Ffxiv doesn't bother with "Borrowed Power" - trinkets, set bonuses, glyphs, MoP cloaks, Legion legendaries and artifact weapons, covenants, etc. I love that. Sure, when a new expansion is released we'll eventually replace raid gear and relic weapons with quest or dungeon gear - but it's still forward movement, never backwards.
