My 2 cents? I bet that Russell flew his drone over the campsite that he wanted. Gregory had a shotgun. He shot down the drone. Russell flew into a rage and Gregory shot him. Then he had to silence the woman. My reasoning is that I know of at least two cases where property owners have shot down drones flying over their property.

She received the first traumatic news…his death, then, she receives a second round of traumatic news….his 15 year affair. The woman was traumatized twice in one day. That’s a lot to deal with. Hopefully, he had great life insurance, money in the bank, assets, etc…..so his traumatized widow can rebuild her life and move on. What a nightmare to endure after 50 years of marriage.

both families had no idea about the affair and when the cops suggested they were both having an affair, rather than being friends as first reported, both families said no way in hell, and then when the families met up, they figured it out by comparing stories and began to process the lies together. His grown children have made statements in the press about how it all unfolded. they were totally blindsided as carol and russell both lied about their activities and/or the locations that weekend to their families. russell's family expected him to be at that location, but alone. carol's family said she would never go camping, and it didn't make sense why she was with an outdoorsy guy they never heard of, and that she had said she was going to another location.

I’ve heard of some horror stories, but I used to camp about 6 times a year. I can’t say I ever had any real issues. Me and my friends were always armed. We each had a handgun, a small plinking rifle (.22 LR) and either a shotgun or AR-15. We’d stay up pretty late and were very aware of our surroundings. I’d never go camping unarmed or alone. But I did have a friend who would go alone. Armed or not, I thought that was crazy.

The blind spot for the American justice system is when you use a car as the weapon to kill, it isn't taken that seriously. The young woman Dr. Grande covered who killed 2 people driving drunk then laughed about it got 14 years. She'll probably be out in 5. When you want to commit homicide in America, use a car.

Murderers of this type typically serve 40+ years, if not their entire lives. There's often talk in the media about releasing this or that serial killer but they all die in jail. The minimum for a life sentence might be 20 years then parole (which is similar to many American states), but very few double homicide defendants are released after 20. Some murderers might have been released after 10 years back in the 70s and 80s, which was how it was across the western world back then, but it's almost unheard of now except in cases with extenuating circumstances.

Thanks for covering this case Dr Grande 🇦🇺. Such a bizarre situation all round. Apparently the old bloke was annoying people by zooming his drone right up to people invading their privacy. And it was illegal to use the drone in the national park. Why didn't he just shoot down the drone? Not that I advocate such actions, but it's such a leap to commit a double homicide. I do wonder if the murderer has committed other crimes. I imagine the police are looking into his history.

I'm assuming it started with having a word with the guy, and it escalated to grabbing the shotgun. None of this would have occurred except for anger, I'm sure, so making a rational decision about using the shotgun is probably not happening.

That doesn’t include marrying his first wife twice and my mom twice… he was quite the manipulator. I’ve been waiting for this one.!This area has always had a bit of a dark reputation. It was the site of many massacres of Aboriginals in the 1800s, and later became known for two unsolved murders on the Wonnangatta Station in 1917/1918. To put in context, this all National Park today with no residents and is only accessible to hikers or those with 4WDs. It’s not somewhere you want to find yourself in an emergency. There is no mobile reception in most places apart from the tops of the ranges.

There's this disturbing case from Brasil, my country home. A couple of teenagers, Liana, 13 yold, Felipe, 16yold. They went to a campsite without their parents knowledge. Well, 4 men lead by a 16 YEARS OLD,(Yes, lead by a teenager), saw the couple and an opportunity . Felipe was killed at the spot, while Liana, was taken, kept hostage for a whole entire week, she was tortured, raped by all the 4 men and by the 16yold. When the couple's dissapearence became high profile, the 16yold decided to kill Liana with one of those knifes used to chop tall grasses. She was struck in the back of her neck. All the criminals were convicted, the 16yold it's currently in a mental facility. That was 20 years ago, and still send chills to my spine.

Since my friend and I were far from the central campground, the bears felt less timid about coming into our camp and stealing our food. Believe me, a bear can look really huge when it is just a few feet away from you.

I agree that Russell’s arrogance may have escalated the situation, but my gut tells me Gregory wasn’t in his usual fit mental state given the timeline. Jetstar stood down two-thirds of its staff (presumably including Gregory) on March 18 and the deaths occurred on March 20. A tragic set of circumstances all round, and I deeply feel for the widow Robin.

I watched this from the very beginning, and there were a group of people who sat around and discussed the situation...one of them was an old friend of his who kept in touch through their ham radio, but there was nothing ever discussed other than where he was, and that was about it, so i don't think he ever mentioned who he was with, just where he was, and when he would return, and that he had a drone...these people discussed the whole thing, his friend, the news reporter, and a detective went over so much speculating what happened... they had a young man on horseback searching, also. I feel sorry for the wife learning so much all at once. She may have had a hard life.

A couple of points to consider, other campers in the area only heard one shot, and Russell was a Ham Radio operator. I think you're probably right about Russell's personality and attitude and the reason for the confrontation. It may not have been the drone that was the trigger for the murders, Lynn liked solo camping for the peace and quiet, he liked the tranquility of being surrounded by nature. Russell may have deliberately run his HF Ham Radio eqipment loud in an attempt to drive Lynn away. To people who aren't Ham Radio enthusiasts the sound from a HF radio is just a very annoying noise. If people go through life pissing people off, sure as eggs are eggs, one day they'll piss off the wrong person... and that will be that.

Aussie living in England here. I read about my former home State in the newspaper, and have been following the case. The story initially unfolded as two missing hikers, likely who got lost in the bush. The family of the old bloke, really pushed it, as they believed there was foul play involved. A lot of people thought they got lost in the wilderness, and police played along with this theory in the media, and it was a shock when there was an arrest and talk of a double homicide. The news was like a thunderbolt out of nowhere. Good analysis.

I had wondered about the motive in this case. The suspect was gainfully employed, likely made a good living as a pilot, so I didn’t think robbery was likely. It makes sense that Russell was harassing the guy, probably in several different ways, and tried to drive him off of “his” camping spot with the drone. Of course, he and especially the gf didn’t deserve to die, but it’s a relief to know it wasn’t some homicidal maniac, serial killer thing.

i never got any vibe of danger from those areas. in fact rural areas period seem a lot safer than the cities in australia and you will often come across guys shooting/hunting who are usually super friendly, willing to share a beer and let you shoot some cans with their rifle (but obviously not in this case). overall i would still rather camp alone in ANY rural area in australia than spend a night walking around melbourne or sydney.

I know of an older man - almost 80, married, who had a very long term affair with a woman in her 40's. 20 years or so, it ended only when he passed away. He lived with this woman during the week, and "went home" to be with his wife on weekends. The guise was that he was working during the week, away on some worksite. The reality was, he was simply in the next town over, at the woman's house. He even brought the wife's laundry to do, and filled water bottles for the wife - the house (wife house) had plumbing problems where in the winter, the water would freeze up so she had no water access. She couldn't drive so unless someone told her, which would be very sad indeed, she wouldn't find out. I dated the son for a while.

One thing to add, they delicately wrote the affair partner into the obituary as a "special friend" and listed her further down after a couple of remembered good friends, so the mother wouldn't realize. I hope she never knew. She was a lovely lady, and he was very nice too, other than this indiscretion, as far as I knew.

It’s sad when you are the last one to find out about the affair that everyone else is aware of. Your story reminded me of one that happened to my family. This happened to a great aunt in my family about a hundred yrs ago her husband was ‘working’ but living with multiple extra families. Returning a few days a month. It imploded when he died she found out in the worse way. And when she died anyone in her will or his was tied up in a decades long court case. It impacted the family so much that the fallout was still being felt when I was a kid 30 odd years ago. Yes the special friends were mentioned in the will. It doesn’t just effect the couple but often many others are dragged in to the lie.

The police kept a lot of info from the public in the Daniel Morcombe case, but it was for a reason. Police were undercover for quite awhile to gain Brett’s trust and to not only get him to confess to the crime but also to show them where he was buried. Hopefully this cases will finally have a resolution, however we can’t forget the suffering of his wife.

I have read a lot of articles and followed this story since the beginning. I'm not saying he deserved what happened but the old man was cranky and provocative, very toxic. People reported he drove his 4x4 on those roads very aggressively, and also at times deliberately slow and holding people up. He had worked in that area, logging and making / maintaining roads and trails for much of his life and acted like he was the boss of the place. He flew his drone illegally, with impunity, and other people reported feeling their privacy was invaded in their camp sites. One person said they waved at it bemusedly and it came right down even closer to their tent. There was so much space out there yet he had to pull right up next to the blue Patrol and camped in this guys pockets basically, trying to pressure him to leave and breathing down his neck. Who knows how much this old guy bullied and pressured people his whole life but it looks like it was a mindset and he finally picked on the wrong person. The man who killed him did not go out on that trip planning to murder anyone and it sounds like the guilt and trauma of the incident had him close to ending his own life. Not that what he did was rational or moral, he sounds like he had some screws loose and behaved very badly, evil even. But he didn't go out looking for this.

If he knew the roads there is a logic to him driving fast and slow. In some cases driving quicker over a graded or bumpy road will make the journey smoother in the car. If the road is in extremely bad condition then it is best to go very slow. I do not know what those roads are like but I have driven off road in various places around Australia and you adjust to the road.

This case is presently before the courts here in Melbourne. Lynn claims he played loud music to annoy the elderly couple. He claims Hill stole his shotgun (an inappropriate and illegal firearm to hunt deer with and illegal to not be securely locked away wheh not in use) and that Clay was killed during a struggle with the gun. He then claimed Hill produced a knife, they struggled with it and Hill accidentally fell onto the knife, ending his life. I guess Lynn had some time in a cell to concoct a fanciful account of the murders.

They even call her mum as well as their mother as she was always there for them as she was us. A parents does not cheat on the child. If one a parent does cheat they and the other parent should make it clear it in no way involves them the child or is because they are less loved by the parent.

Most of you are talking about this from a modern-day perspective. You have to appreciate that this was a 50 year marriage. Of two people who met before 1970! People get into that comfy space and just trust one another. He'd always been a bushy from the logging work, and always gone camping. In Australia, that's often a very normal thing to do - this is a big country, with many many wide-open spaces. His wife likely had other interests and didn't really want to go. Not many long term married people are joined at the hip. She would have just thought, 'oh, that's his thing' and not ever dreamed he was taking a woman out there with him. They had two grown daughters. When they appeared on the 60 mins, or Australian Story program, whichever it was (you can look it up) it was only the daughters that appeared. Their mum, understandably, esp from her generation, demurred to appear. No doubt just too mortified. They had no idea, none of them, and were clearly devastated. Remember your Brokeback Mountain, and the ''Fishing Trips' (??) She was only suspicious due to being at home with babies and wanting him there, and due to his odd behaviour when he'd come back. Just leave them alone with the speculations that she'd be 'happy he and his mistress are gone', or 'hope she got lots of his money' and other stupid remarks I've read. Devastated and bewildered. That's what they were. Its all a tragedy for that family. Have some bloody compassion. Speculate about the event, the killer, the motives , etc, but leave the family alone. They had nothing to do with any of it, after all. They weren't there. Respect their dignity. Please.
