Yep. You had a great mom. My mom was pretty good, but I craved advice. She never left me with any phrase she would always say, or words or wisdom. I even know what some of my friends parents use to always tell them for advice. My parents loved me. And led by example, by always getting up for work every day. Never taking a day off. So I learned a good work ethic. But I still wish I had some verbal advice, or something? Advice on becoming a woman, dating, on boys, on sex, on marriage . I didn’t get a talk, about any of it. Had to figure it all out on My own. Now a days…..I try to teach my kids everything I can about life.

My parents raised me saying the EXACT same phrase. My father especially. My father and I were like twins. We were best friends in the sense of we did everything together, hung out all the time, talked smack about people together, laughed, cried, and everything in between, but at the same time he was still my father and a damn good one. I miss him everyday. My mother is the mama bear and if you mess with her baby, you're gonna get mauled. I'm so grateful that I had such a wonderful childhood.

The fact that her child opened herself to her parent proves that she is a mother who isn't quick to lash out harshly whenever she hears news she doesn't like. She makes herself emotionally available to her child so her child is comfortable speaking to her about such a sensitive topic. She needs to still be firm and place boundaries, yet foster an atmosphere of open and healthy dialogue to explore this issue from various angles

Parents shouldn't only breed to instruct, protect, and provide, but to build a solid, wholesome, respectful, honest, and enthusiastic bond with their offspring. Wisdom will aid in properly balancing those various identity-perceptions of the parent

Once the kid is already doing it, it's risk management. Say you think it's too soon and think they should slow down, but don't take steps to "make" them stop. Get them birth control, maintain consistent communication. That's all you can do. Trying to over control it will backfire. It's risk mitigation at this point, baby.

This is true. Unfortunately, like her daughter, I lost it with my boyfriend at 15 as a PASTORS daughter. It was a nightmare. But my mother put me on birth control. I'm 21 now and have been on it since I was 15. Yes, I still had sex, and yes I made some bad choices. However, I haven't gotten pregnant and I've been safe. Unfortunately it's most of the time true once you open that box, it's open. I got punished for having sex at 15, maybe rightfully so, but It didn't stop me. In no way do I think I was ready, but at that point in my life I was going to do it no matter what.

I can’t agree with you more. I don’t have kids myself because of health issues. I do however have lots of nieces and nephews. The youngest two just turned 16 in May. They’re twin boys. Their parents have two very different approaches to things like this. My brother is very open about sex. My SIL kind of has this attitude that if it’s not spoken of, it won’t happen. Yet she walked into one of her boys rooms while he was jerking off. She came right out and said that she was weirded out by it. She thinks that no kids have ever done that. She has older brothers but by the time she was in high school they had already moved out and were in college. So even if they do that at home she likely never knew it. She spoke to them about it and they told her that it was normal for boys to do things like that. She still doesn’t think it is. My brother on the other hand while he knows what it’s like to be a teen father, knows that you can’t be with your kids 24/7. So they know the risks involved and aware of the consequences.

Shortly before I turned 16 my parents pulled out all the stops to get me out of an unhealthy relationship. Took my phone, didn’t let me get a license, etc. At the time, I “hated” them (had a great relationship with them before this incident). I threatened to run away and get emancipated and all sorts of other craziness. Less than a year later I appreciated what they did for me. As a parent, I can only imagine how hard that season was for them and I’m so grateful they did everything to keep me safe.

I don’t totally agree with John here, it’s best to keep her safe and protected my opinion with birth control or condoms. As soon as she turns 16 age of consent in Washington is 16 years old. Most of the United States is 16 or higher. Some states are 15 so if that’s the case that means that most adults think that children at 16 or older can make consenting choices to have sex, I don’t know what John is talking about here, but it seems more like his moral values or religious values is in the way of what the law says. I and give them all the details of what’s going on what can happen. If you truly cannot wait, then give them protection, but you would prefer them not to have sex. as long as all the parents agree about the situation. Because if their parents don’t approve, maybe then, she has less to worry about because their parents are pulling the son away not her. Overall, my parents could control me whatsoever. They tried the best, but I was very sexually rambunctious when I was a teenager we have to live and learn from our mistakes and no amount of parenting would’ve controlled me.

Right in my late twenties and my mother as of this year doesn't know if I'm a virgin or not lol. There is no way in hell that I ever would have been comfortable enough to go to my mother as an adult and let her know what was going on in my sex life. The mom needs to try to guide her in the safest direction but she can't push her there. Or the trust or the trust she had going to her about this, is permanently dead. And that could be considered a lot more dangerous then sex.

Well, here's my opinion. Yes, 15 is young. Probably too young. But it isn't 100% destined to end in a disaster. I met my gf when we were both 15, and yes, we did "it". Here we are 7 years later still together. How ever now that I am 22, I can definitely see why any parent would agree with John here. If it was my own child, I would probably be just as protective. I guess we were "lucky".

I turned 16 and my parents bought me a box of condoms and gave me the talk and told me i could trust them with whatever I needed to say. I was always truthful when I was going to see a girl or if I wasn’t. I later asked them why they did that instead of taking my truck away or taking my phone away. They said because we were once teenagers and our parents did exactly that and we still found a way. Teenagers who wanna do it will always find a way. So if we can’t stop you we might as well do our best to make sure you’re safe. Also it’s not allowed in our house!

At 15, most people don’t understand the full consequences of our actions. There’s a difference between consent and informed consent. It takes aging a few years to get what your parents are talking about. My first xesual encounter was at 17. Even though I was not manipulated or had a 6un held to my head, I was doing a disservice to myself. This 15 y/o girl may think this is a good idea now, but she might gain a different perspective when she enters adulthood.

@@ralegade7710 I come from a third world country and where it does happen that minors are married it’s completely illegal and it won’t be a recognised civil marriage until the age of 18. But of course we’re dealing with some serious stuff here, severe and violent rape culture, women and child abuse stats that will have your head spinning, so we just can’t afford to also be marrying off kids. But in rural areas (where there’s a lack of jobs, education, resources and all round progress), they still do it. So yeah, not a good measure to base your argument on.

I was told by my dad that anyone I date I might marry and to not consider dating someone until I knew them well enough that I would marry them if they asked me on the first date. I thought they were incompetent and thought it was a stupid waste of time to be in a relationship where neither the bf nor the gf want to marry the other person, so I decided not to pursue anyone that I didn’t want to marry. Then my junior year of high school, I met my now wife. Towards the end of my junior year of high school, I asked my now wife to be my girlfriend and go out to dinner with me on a date that weekend because I knew I wanted to marry her. I was only 17 and she was only 15 and we ended up getting married and have been together ever since. It’s really not as difficult as people make it out to be as long as you use basic common sense.

I saw all my friends engage in sex in school and all they got out of it was literal emotional damage. Sex really should be saved for marriage. i started dating my first boyfriend at 14. we started doing those things at 15 and broke up before we were 17 and it was the most painful thing either of us went through. we are both almost 24 now and in different cities with new partners and still agree it was the most intense, heartbreaking thing we experienced when it ended. we were too young for that kind of relationship. children and we were acting like a married couple. in way over our heads and i wouldn’t want my kids dating until at least 16.

I think you nailed it. Supporting a relationship before a certain age then opens the door to early sexual activity that you then set your child up to expecting you to support too… you know I’m avidly reading all the comments because I have a preteen daughter and I know this is coming sooner or later, the conversation at least and I think it’s a strong safeguard to just say as a parent I’m not entertaining boyfriends until the age of 16… that way the whole thing only begins at 16 instead of ripening at 16. My daughter is phenomenal and we thus far have a great relationship, but I think she knows me well enough to know I mean what I say. Period.

There is a serious medical argument for not taking chemical birth control from a young age. My sister did and she had significant difficulty getting pregnant when she finally decided she was ready to have children. A discussion of this factor might go a long way to making a young woman rethink the pharmaceutical industry's recommended advice on this subject, particularly if you include in that discussion their record on opioids and their obvious failures thereof.

Which is upsetting to me because we are close and I'm more conservative. But my understanding is most of them do not want to use contraceptives like condoms. They seems to gravitate towards the birth control which I just don't get. There are no easy answers here. Hard to watch them make these choices.

It's not a 180 to say, "I heard you, and I appreciate so much that you came to me. I have thought about it, and though I respect you so much, I feel it is my job to protect you and allow you to be a child for a bit longer. I cannot condone you having sex. There is nothing wrong with sex, but it is a huge grown-up responsibility, and I want you to be able to be free from that kind of thing for a while longer. Though I love you no matter what, I want you to know that I do not want you having sex yet. I understand this might make you upset, but please know I love you and I am doing my best to do right by you." If my mother were to say that to me, it would not break my trust. I might be mad, but I would definitely still trust her.

I have to disagree on this take. The environment that this mum has obviously created... Is amazing. Truly beautiful. I started having sex at 16 (almost 17) and NEVER would of told my parents. I lied for years. But I knew I decided after being with my partner (and current husband) for a year... I decided I wanted to. I didn't want anyone else's opinion besides a healthcare provider and how to go about doing this safely. It can be very lonely to make this grown up decisions so young. So I'm so proud of this mum and how much trust she's obviously built up over her whole life. Fantastic parenting. ❤️

My first time was at 15. I can't say for sure if I was too young or not. As a Christian I slightly regret it but the main thing is that it was always in a safe situation with someone I trusted who also trusted me. As young as 15 is, the main thing is that they're safe.

The fact is that at 15 her daughter is still below the age of consent. She can't legally condone or allow it. Most people cannot handle the psychological consequences of it until 18 or 19, so that's the kind of age she should be forcing her daughter to wait until.

You should probably consider the fact that 150-200 years ago the emotional and mental developments of 15-year-olds were completely different. Even though a lot of 15-year-olds are physically mature enough to have kids does not mean they are mentally prepared for it. 15 years old is too young for a child. When I was 24 years old I was put in a situation where I had to care for my 13-year-old niece. I was not prepared for that at all, I was financially prepared. I had a good job with great benefits. But caring for a child is very difficult. Especially when my job required me to move to a new country every single year. Keep in mind I was 24 years old at the time. The kid turned out alright, but it's safe to say I was not the best parent. I became more of a best friend, which tends to happen with parents who are very young... My whole point is comparing us to people who lived 150-200 years ago is not really a good idea...

I'm sorry to hear you regret your experience, it's important to discuss with a teen to wait until their ready and make sure they are safe and with someone they trust. Teens will have sex with or without our permission, it's about teaching them to not be peer pressured and be safe. It's better your teen is comfortable coming to you than being afraid too. Set boundaries within your home, such as no locking themselves in the bedroom and curfew so sex is less likely. My mom is a nurse and spoke to me honestly as a teen and I thank her for that. The best advice she gave me was, don't let anyone peer pressure you, make sure it's with someone you won't regret, and ALWAYS ALWAYS use protection.

People who call adolescents 'babies' seem to not have a good handle on developmental biology, and while it's not ideal to start a family in your teen years for many reasons, speaking as a teen father who has a solid marriage, a successful business, and a good life, age is not necessarily an indicator of maturity.

Experience also helps probably in your marriage and in your business as well. So I still call my teenagers my kids. One is 20 and the other is 22 I'm going to be 23 soon. They're still kids in my eyes because they lack real world experience. I will give you it some kids do have real world experience but they are not know it alls. And raising children is extremely hard. And if you throw in being single and getting pregnant. That's another ball game. I would never wish this on a child. But yes adolescents but they're still lacking a ton of insight and experience. Heck half of them don't even know how to wash the dishes or clean their bedroom. Let alone to have babies.

I have no relationship with my parents because they were not at all supportive of my choices, but those choices were mine, and I am proud of the decisions I've made. One thing I will never get is that when it comes to first-time fatherhood (or motherhood), a 35 year old has pretty much the same experience parenting as I did at 18. While they do have more life experience and perhaps more financial security, it's otherwise a level playing field, and so it becomes what each individual makes it. I think we could find instances of failure and success at pretty much every age. And, I can imagine you would agree with me here, as you age and throughout parenthood, we as people are constantly growing, learning and evolving, in our relationships, our roles and in ourselves, so all of us grow alongside our children.

Talking from experience As a girl who had sex since she was 15 and parents pretty much just turned the blind eye and pretty much didn’t want to know what I was doing. Never questioned what I was doing if I was doing it or that I should stop let boyfriend spend the night , my parents drink with me and now as a 35-year-old woman who is incredibly ashamed of everything I did and now wishes I had parent that tried to protect me and show me why it was wrong and how it would affect me later I hope she sees this message Because her daughter is enjoying it now but it’s probably not the man she’s going to marry, and she will always regret it God bless ❤

We were a religious family and when my daughter asked for birth control at 14 for "acne" i said no- I regret that decision. We did not have a frank talk with bf's parents and found out later that they were allowed to spend time alone- while the parents were home. I assumed they were chaparoned.

I lost my virginity when i was 15. I told my mom, i wasn’t forced. She didn’t get mad at me or anything. I’ve been on birth control since i was 9 for hormonal acne (started my period when i was 7). I also took other precautions to prevent pregnancy. My mom never told me to stop. And honestly, it wouldn’t have helped even if she did. I would’ve just not told her. I have an incredible relationship with my mother. I am 24. I’ve told her anytime i’m in a sexual relationship with someone. If she blew up on me when i was younger I don’t think I would’ve ever had a good relationship with her. I’m not saying sex that young is good. But, at least make sure they have the means to prevent pregnancy.
