Amen. 💯 We don’t even realize until hindsight kicks in how incredibly childish, and naive, and immature we still were at that age - it’s a dangerous immaturity, because mentally and physically we’re so much more independent as teens, but common sense and safety and foresight has nothing to do with decision-making at that age: desire and emotions are running the ship, which is why firm parental boundaries and lots of communication and teaching is so so important.

Nonsense... It's of course individual, but there's nothing saying that no-one can be ready for intimacy at 16. (except religious dogma) Your job as a parent is not to be morality police, but to help (if possible without being intrusive) them to get as positive and safe a start with intimacy as possible. If they have a boy/girl-friend who is respectful, patient and loving don't make them feel guilty for taking the opportunity to not get a bad start by trying it out now.

And what do you think that changes? Having the sex talk with my parents didn’t prevent choosing to have sex. The talk doesn’t suddenly prevent couples having sex and guaranteeing abstinence. If parents really wanted to have a proper discussion on the topic they’d focus on the total picture and especially focus on safe sex and understanding contraception. The long game is expressing your concern that they’re too young to have sex and encouraging them to wait but understanding that sex happens and making sure that if they do choose to have sex they have the proper knowledge to be safe. Because counting on abstinence is the riskiest game you can play because the reality is if teens want to have sex they’ll find ways ti have sex. My parents were not supportive of that at all but as a high schooler my mind was made up and I found ways to make it happen. And that doesn’t mean endorse them to have sex but it does mean prepare so that if they do make that decision it’s the safest it can be.

I’m not saying you need to sign off on it but you do need to be realistic that if they want to do it they’re going to find a way to do it whether you want to believe that or not. So teach them your values, encourage them to wait, open lines of communication but also make sure they understand safe sex so that if they make that choice it isn’t catastrophic. But beating up your kid for having sex isn’t going to suddenly make them not want to have sex anymore as much as the archaic past may make you want to believe that.

No it's not ... what's scary is the religious dogma which makes it a priority to prevent teenage intimacy at all cost instead of supporting them in getting the best start possible under safe conditions. FYI... the legal age of consent in a lot of European countries is 15yo ... In Germany it's even 14yo. Don't make a big fuzz about 16yo making out in your home. It's about the safest conditions for them imaginable. ... would you rather it happened at some frat-party she'd sneaked away to?

not true. If you're not "controlling" which i'm assuming you mean having rules, especially unpopular rules, then they just grow up thinking that those things are okay and will still do them. They just won't feel shame or guilt for doing them. For example, most pple experiment w/ drugs and alcohol at some point, some parents aren't "controlling" and allow their kids to drink or try other drugs in their basement. Those pple still drink a lot, people w/ "controlling" parents often drink too (though usually later). Most kids whose parents weren't "controlling" that I knew in high school now have mild alcohol problems. This is just one example.A lot of it has to do w/ the child's temperament as well.

I disagree. I’ve raised two sons. You cannot call other parents. Her daughter will be mad. Do not allow her to go to his home. Let him visit her with boundaries in your own home. She needs to have open communication with her daughter. Are you going to call every boyfriend she has or what she does hanging around other girls. You can’t call every parent. Raise your daughter with good values and open communication. I was raised by loving parents and my dad was a police officer. Kids will experiment but they need a strong family relationship to return to. The daughter won’t tell her parents anything if they call all her friends parents

As a 50 yr old woman I fully agree with every word you wrote. The most important tools that girl needs is a strong self-esteem, a loving relationship with her family and a talk on contraceptives. gotta be honest, i would NOT appreciate if my SO's parents told my parents about this stuff without talking to me. Put boundaries in your own home. The bf probably comes over to your home more for a reason. He may (like me) have super controlling or overreactive parents. 16 is definitely old enough to have a mature discussion with them about safety, house rules, etc. But the boy shouldn't be punished because they did something physical (maybe his parents aren't like that but I'm speaking from my own perspective). Edit: i'm 29 and my parents would go nuclear over completely innocent, normal teenage development stuff. For whatever reason, they did NOT trust their own parenting and assumed the worst of me at every turn. Looking back on my teenage behavior, I laugh at my own innocence.

So all the dudes at her school now know that shes putting out. Im not sure what all the parents said to her.. But sex is not a light topic. Pregnancy is real. "your son's and daughters are beyond your command" - Dylan. It can feel defeating as a parent because you can only do so much to try to direct the behavior of your child. But they're a child. I think the best thing you can try to do is let them know you're not here to make enemies. You're here to be a parent. And that means protecting them with your values. And be clear that you don't agree with what they are doing. And be clear that there will be boundaries of the house and that you may make the decision not to let her go to his. And as much as she may disagree with it she's going to have to deal with it because she's under your roof and she's your child. Because if you do nothing and just give in out of fear of your child hating you, that just means you're basically ceding your entire moral value system as a parent. At the end of the day all you can do is a parent is decide what rules exist under your roof, and what penalties exist for breaking those rules. Tough moments basically majority parents of a teen child has to go through.

When my daughter was 14 I spoke to her boyfriends mom to see what her thoughts were on kids being alone in a bedroom or any room unsupervised. Her boyfriend would come to our house and she went to his so I wanted to touch base with her. Her answer was “ I put condoms in the bathrm cabinet and in the bedrooms so they’ll be safe and take one if they need to.” We weren’t on the same page at all. I said they’re very young, she said oh I was younger. Oh boy, I was 17 which was young but 14 seems like a baby to me. Either way I explained to my daughter that she couldn’t go there anymore because they were too young to be left alone but he was welcome to come to our house. It didn’t go over well. She hated me for a long time and felt I was “being dramatic.” Turned out they had had sex and didn’t use protection so thank god I did the best I knew at that time. The one thing I wish I handled better was finding out that situation because I got upset and said we are going to the doctor for birth control tomorrow. I should have thought about it before talking to her. Unfortunately, I had her go on the depo shot and she gained a lot of weight. Now she older and her weight has been a struggle since then which I hold a lot of guilt about. I did the best I could and with my younger daughter I’ll do better. Thanks to this show I’ll have more skills than I did back then ❤

I think I would have a private conversation with the young man...as adult to adult. Approach him with expectations for your child, for the man she will meet, the beginnings of learning how to have friendship with men, with the man someday she will marry. If the young man enjoys your family, I would treat him as the adult he wants to be...not the child he still might be. And also with the daughter. She needs to be as protective of the men she meets and dates, as well as you want him to protect her. Trustability needs to be talked about...influence over the younger children in the family and such. I'm not sure I'd bring his parents into this at all, because you don't know how they're going to react, and it's a mistake the first time. If there's a second time, it's a bit different. Just an old mama's thoughts. But why are they "dating", if his mother is having to drop him off. If they aren't driving...is it really a date?

Chaperone the daughter. She simply is not alone with her boyfriend. At all. Unless, of course, they want to take the kids in front of the preacher now and have them say their I do's.

@Clouded Colour, if possible they need to homeschool her. She's shown herself to be a lying, sneaky little tramp. If she were my kid she'd be grounded till she's of age. If homeschooling isnt possible, maybe they have relatives who live in the boondocks where she can be sent. Or a maximum security girls boarding school in the middle of the Moab Desert.

Too much laughter going on this is serious. At least a sexually transmitted disease at most pregnancy. It’s not funny or cute.
