Wow. I have always known and loved Julie, from the first time I watched Mary Poppins and the Sound of Music as a child. Only a few months ago when I re-watched the Sound of Music did I realise how completely extraordinary she is. Her voice and acting are one of a kind, and she seems to be a truly kind, fun and generally lovely person. She is also so naturally beautiful, to this day. Julie is honestly my idol, and I admire all of her work, from the superb things she did as a young girl, like the recording above, to the modern acting pieces still coming out today. Julie, I idolise you and can only thank you.

Julie herself has talked about having had an adult larynx when an young girl. Her teacher taught her to sing this way, trilling every 'r', very old fashioned, but you can understand every word, a hallmark of her singing from then on. Deana Durbin also sang this way. What a great find this recording is. Julie's destiny, to sing show music, took her away from old fashioned ways, and the rest is history. A British songbird for the ages. To me, her Christmas music is her best, arranged by Previn.

Julie definitely knew the value of practice, unlike other notable singers in the 60s we won't mention here. I remember seeing here on a talk show discussing this exact topic. She was saying that for her, she had to practice to make her performance perfect and it wasn't always easy. For her, there were no short cuts. So, while other singers may not practice and can still turn in reasonable performance, she said she just couldn't work this way. For her, practice did make it perfect.

I have always been in awe of the singing talent of Julie Andrews and always will--even after the tragic malpractice with her throat some fifteen years ago. I am glad to hear her nightingale voice in the form like this clip. At the same time, however, I am sad to realize that throat surgery was a great loss for all of us who love Julie Andrews. Why did she have to get victimized by a disqualified surgeon? The photos in which she looked innocent in her youth are treasures as well.
@JRobbySh6 жыл бұрын
Actually, the operation was a happy misfortune. If she was loved before, her comeback has made her adored. Her reduced voice is nonetheless a beautiful speaking voice, which audiences are most glad to hear. The 50th anniversary of South of Music made her the object of adulation. Much more heart felt than if her voice had simply faded away as other musical stars have,

(Some criticism - even from Julie herself - of their naffness, but they're not a bad effort - and at least fit the tune well IMO, which many lyrics don't - hymns, pop songs, and about the worst, Rule Britannia.)

@@joyk555 I don't think so - I imagine for something like a Royal Variety Performance a little money could have been found! I think it's two factors: firstly, the novelty of a child star looks even more novel if she looks even younger - perhaps not admirable, but that's showbiz; and secondly, I think girls _were_ dressed younger in those days. And she _wasn't_ very busty in her early teens, not like (some of) today's girls of similar ages - see the 3-86 video, so _could_ be dressed younger.
@dontip222 Жыл бұрын
@@G6JPG I think you are right about trying to make her look as young as possible. She was a child star in England at that time. No one could know her career would last life long and not just vanish when she became a teen, as so many do. It's pretty common in show business, even now.
