We recently installed an OS Giken Super Lock limited slip differential on our Project DC2 Integra! Watch as Mike Kojima explains everything you ever wanted to know about LSD but were afraid to ask! The OS Giken Super Lock 1-way differential completely transformed our Integra and even at a price point around $1500 it's one of the biggest bang for the buck performance modifications you can do on a front wheel drive car--especially if you take it to the track!
Quick note from Jonathan Lugod @ OS Giken: Their diffs are not static preload adjustable. With the number of clutch plates available, higher preload isn't necessary for high horsepower builds. For lower horsepower FWD builds (under 250hp/25t/lb tq and 200 treadwear tires), quicker lock timing greatly benefits the set up. All OS Giken LSD tuning is done in house as they have a vast database of information to jump start a high end build with minimal back and forth (if even at all!) Services start at $150 shipping included. Email Sales@osgikenusa.com for any questions!

you can also play with higher/different viscosity gear oil to tune this to be more aggressive, especially in RWD dorifto applications, as the OS Giken out of the box is tuned for softer engagement(and thus less chattery and more dual purpose friendly, as designed)....so i've heard

6:51 is what the cam i'm talking about ^ :D When the trans is in forward gear the Pinion Cross shaft would would back, think of it as the Pinion Cross shaft being you in the drivers seat and you romping on the accelerator pedal and whats going to happen is you'll be pushed back into your seat, same explanation with the differential cam and Pinion Cross shaft, it moves back and pushes out the wedge shape triangle cam and the pressure rings would then compress the clutch packs so it won't differentiate the wheel speed from left to right. I hope i got that right, this is my explanation :D While braking if its a 1 way LSD the opposite side of the cam is going to be flat material where the pinion shaft cannot place any wedging effect on the clutch packs. I already knew this info from looking online but could never find a good video about it till now. Thanks Mike.

Surprised to see all this love for OS Giken when KAAZ is just as customizable, right down the street from you guys and they use WPC treatment on the clutches in their QT model differentials to allow them to require barely any break in, longer clutch life and cooler operating temperatures. Same designs and customizability and great state side support too. Not that the OS gikens arent awesome just that KAAZ has been well supported in the US for a lot of years now and make some super nice pieces.
@motoiq
@motoiq 7 ай бұрын
OS is way more adjustable than KAAZ. KAAZ is a good quality but very conventional salsbery type LSD like any on the market, it has more clutches and tends to lock up very aggressively. It is only adjustable for initial lock up through 3 different cone spring thicknesses and by deactivating clutches.

Would using heavy springs reduce diff noise and chatter in parking lot situations? Maybe deactivate a set of clutches, use the heavier cone spring and the heavier opposing springs and have a nice daily that won’t one wheel peel?
@motoiq
@motoiq 2 жыл бұрын
WPC treatment of the clutches and the diff housing makes a huge difference in chatter. Stiffer springs reduces the initial breakaway torque but doesn't do much for noise. Adding redline LSD additive helps as well.

How does this stack up to a Quaife? My Speed 3 came from the factory with LSD, but I'm no longer at the stock 230/250 @ the wheels; I'm now at ~390/385 @ the wheels. The long-term plan is to go EFR7163 and tune it for a flat 380-400wtq curve from 3k-7k and ~500whp at 7k, which should be a very linear and useable curve that has tons of power under it. I wonder if I should look at this or the Quaife when I do so, as auto-x and road courses are in the future.

I prefer clutch type diffs over helical types, especially on high powered cars because of the action is much more consistent. On high powered cars, helical diffs can slew around which is not cool. Also if you get differential wheelspin, helical diffs can run away and act like an open diff. Finally, helical diffs act like an open diff if one wheel gets up in the air which can cause run away.
@bujin5455
@bujin5455 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure why a clutch powered LSD was selected over a helical for track corner exit duty. Helicals are generally better, as long as you aren't planing to have one tire in the air, and they have super smooth engagement, and no wearable parts.
@motoiq
@motoiq 2 жыл бұрын
Clutch LSD's are greatly superior for the rear of a car vs helical. They get unstable with higher powered, bigger tired cars and if one wheel starts to break away they act like open diffs. They are also not user tuneable. They are good for moderate power OEM use. They are good for the front of AWD cars.

In our experience with this diff, not for a long, long, long time in an FWD car of this power level. I really dislike gear type LSD's and will only use one if there is no other choice. They are sort of like open diff deluxes.

Long ago, there's an article or video regarding WPC treatment on LSD posted by MotoIQ and few others years ago, how it eliminated gear noise and improved lock-on. Do you still recommend on all LSD to get WPC treatment from gears, pinion, to clutch plates, even most expensive LSD on the market? Just being wary what ?not? to WPC on LSD, or WPC treatment will not adverse the function of LSD or transmission parts/gears like dog teeth, hub, block ring, etc. It's probably mind boggling to others, where you want friction, but WPC treatment helps lessen friction and same time strengthen surface; even others had WPC treated the flywheel surface that actually helped engagement with clutch, etc. I would like to see a new video, article if you could break down, WPC this/optional and don't WPC that/ never. or just maybe, there's no limit to WPC treatment on all metal surface?!

@motoiq

We used Redline MT90. Clutch chatter is not an issue with our DC2. The chatter we refer to is from the diff having a little too much lock when leaving a drive way and the inside wheel "chatters" or "hops". There are no shifting issues to report.

I'm currently using Motul 823511 Gear FF Competition 75W140. There's some mild typical 'parking lot' chatter. It tends to bind more after a few thousand miles. I'll have to try the one you're using Mike.

driftbro yes you just need a 1.5 or 2 way depending on ur usage.
@mikekojima9761
@mikekojima9761 6 жыл бұрын
the stock VLSD is ok while the engine is stockish unless you drift. Then you need a two way. Add power and big tires, then yes a clutch type diff starts to make more sense 1.5 way for grip, 2 way for drift.

What are the benefits of having a bit of lock under deceleration with a 1.5 way?

It can help rotate the car to the apex.

Does that mean the driver doesn't need to trail brake as much while still having the car to rotate towards the apex?

why this over a quaiffe/factory ITR style diff?
@mikekojima9761
@mikekojima9761 6 жыл бұрын
It works a lot better, helical diffs don't lock very well and act like an open diff if one wheel gets air or starts to spin. The side gears loose their grip on the case if one side starts to run away.
@TheJonny2you
@TheJonny2you 6 жыл бұрын
OK, I can see that. i just always thought the torque biasing properties outweighed its negative of not being a a true locking differential. I just love how it feels when a helical/planetary diff sends a little more torque to the outside wheel exiting a corner in a FWD, it feels like cheating.

This diff is like that only better!
@beanshooter5784
@beanshooter5784 6 жыл бұрын
quaiffe is better, yea it acts like an open when one wheel gets away like on ice or if its in the air but you can counter that by tapping the brake causing it to preload and start sending torque to the wheel with traction

DC2 is an integra type R
@motoiq
@motoiq 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if that's you're whole answer you're only partially right. Though the 97-01 (except 99) Integra Type R is a DC2, so are the USDM 1994-2001 Integra GS-R, JDM 1993-1995 Integra Si VTEC, and the JDM 1995-2001 Integra SiR-G, Type R, Xi-G. Our Project DC2 Integra is a 1996 USDM GSR, so it is a DC2.

Paraphrasing one of earlier replies, I prefer clutch type diffs over helical types, especially on high powered cars because of the action is much more consistent. On high powered cars, helical diffs can slew around which is not cool. Also if you get differential wheelspin, helical diffs can run away and act like an open diff. Finally, helical diffs act like an open diff if one wheel gets up in the air which can cause run away.
