All hams who do more with the hobby than just chat on the air, meaning those who follow Peter's videos need real big junk boxes. I've spent years scrounging through dumpsters behind electronics start-ups, pulling parts from junk consumer electronics, and digging through boxes under the tables at ham swaps, so I'm in good shape for experimenting with electronics and RF projects. I've gotten some insanely good deals, like a couple of thousand dollars worth of unsorted silver mica capacitors for $20 that were in a box of junk under a table at a swap. All I had to do was spend a few evenings sorting and bagging them. If you like to build and tinker with circuits, I recommend doing those things. You can build up an impressive parts stock for essentially no money, and you can then easily afford to supply parts to your friends, new hams, and kids who want to build things.

👍Excellent Peter. I can't remember seeing that L=wavelength/10, C= wavelengthX2 rule before. Very useful for getting in the right ballpark,, thanks.

That was a worthwhile watch, I learnt a lot, thanks. Just goes to show that if you keep the power down, you can use simple parts and still do DX. Thanks Peter.

Well, why not? Reminds me of Charlie Morris building filters and IF amps on Veroboard. Those ceramic Jaycar caps are rubbish, dielectric like mud for RF, but I used them for a few early projects and got away with it. 73 and thanks for keeping on making entertaining videos! 🤓

TNX for another interesting tutorial Peter! Did you use any counterpoise? Apparently not if I see well from the video... I often use an EFHW antenna on 20 m when /P (with HM clone of the MEF-1 coupler) and found a counterpoise does not make any difference. However I use some meters (don't remember exactly how long...) of RG174 between the FT-818 and the coupler: could it be that is the coax cable shield which acts as counterpoise? 73 de IW5CWC

Great video, 15000km is fantastic! What would you have to do different for 30 or 50 watts? Does common mode current become an issue at more power? I see alot of guys use an impedance transformer but still have to use an antenna tuner here and there so using a single L-match like you have is attractive.

Everything needs to be different at higher power. Higher voltage capacitors, beefier inductors and everything MUST be soldered as you'd arc the breadboard.

Great vid Eric. Perhaps you could do a simple breadboard tutorial for beginners vid making something like a CW transmitter or something else often made dead-bug style? Regards, Jas. VK4FJGS Rocky Qld.

Thanks, video just in time...Yesterday I finally hooked up my Qcx mini to end fed and noticed significant loss in receiving with T-50 balloon in comparison to just a wire without any matching. Is this expected?
@vk3ye
@vk3ye Жыл бұрын
Depends on the length of the wire and the impedance ratio of the balun.
