I have 1977 xr4 blackmax 150. When trying to start, turn key off and it keeps turning over. Also, when starts, won't shut off with key. Any ideas

Hi Just bought a 1983 blackmax xr2 - I found a loose vaccumtube that was connected right behind the excellerator and went through the middle path of engine to behind ignition plate - burned up on end. Can you tell me where yours connects too? I domt see another nipple to connect this tube/ Thanks, Cliff

the clicking is the prop grinding the gears because it is still spinning, but the motor has stopped and you had it in gear, anytime your engine dies out immediately put it in neutral because over time this can cause problems if you do it frequently

That doesn't make sense. How can the prop spin if its in gear and the engine stopped?

Spin because the boat was still moving forward after engine died. Kinda like a fan. Even if motor isnt on if enough wind is going across the blades they will still spin. Basically same concept. The water moving across the prop will make it spin if theres enough current force. An its designed to do that so it doesnt create strain on transmission gears an cause damage if engine dies while still in gear and boat is moving.

the clicking noise is because the throttle is down when the motor died usually it’s supposed to be in neutral when engine shuts off mine does the same thing

No spark on left side has to be switch boxes. Better replace stator along with both new switch boxes.

I had a similar problem. My motor is a 1995 Mercury 150 EFI XRI Black Max Ran great at idle but was a little high at about 1100-1,200 rpm. It would not go above about 2000 rpm at WOT. It would sound like its sucking air and also sounded like it wasn't getting enough gas and also smoked a lot more. I found out that some cylinder's were cutting out at 2000 rpm which is when the stator changes from low voltage to high voltage. I changed the stator which was confirmed bad on the high side voltage and I also put on two new rectifiers. Took it to lake test and it still had the same problem. I changed out the switch boxes with a couple used ones I had. Lake tested again and still the same. I disconnected the Idle stabilizer and it idled at about 800 rpm. and then tested on the water and it worked great. Fast as hell. The Idle stabilizer not only controls the low idle it controls high idle, now I get 500 more RPM. and it also caused the problem to make it look like the switch boxes were bad and made me suspect everything else. Disconnect the two wires for the Idle stabilizer box at the switch box's there are Two barrel plugs for disconnect. I believe my original problem was caused by not having clean tight battery terminal connections on the battery. I think a loose battery cable caused the rectifiers to heat up and blow the stator and maybe the idle stabilizer also? Definitely a bad Idle stabilizer can cause high idle and your motor not to exceed 2000 rpm. and make it look like the stator and switch boxes are bad. Good luck!

TIP: We have same issue:: BUT in the end it's show the SWITCH BOXES was the main issue, so if we or anybody have know we not have all this change of STATOR and Rectifier etc..., after change BOTH Switch Boxes, and now it run like NEW OB 150 HP Black Max S/N OB 349030, so start to check the Switch Boxes , it can solve a lot of Headick and Problems... /// IMCR ...

Tracy Moser i got the problem fixed and it ran like a bat out of hell. Threw me back so fast i broke the steering wheel. It was the stator. Cost me about 600-700, had a shop do it.

Try looking at your hoses mine did this the same shit what it most likely is clean the car and adjust the fuel and gas mixer an put it on choke till gas fills up the carb then dump the gas out the carb then it's ok

Weird clicking noise from it dying in gear. My '97 150 efi is doing the exact same thing and is actually leaking from the stator. I cant get over 2300 rpm and 10 mph

We have a 1989 black max 175. We were running down the lake going 52 mph, with lower water pressure(it was running fine the day before)and suddenly the motor started to over rev. We powered down and shut the engine off, and the motor was overheated. The motor will not turn over well, and will most definitely not start. Can anybody tell me what could be wrong just by what I told you?

Michael Mueller you hit the nail on the head. Cylinder 2(when looking at back of motor, the top right piston)blew.

Honestly I think you blew the foot the waterpump section of the propeller impeller off of the foot and you've overheated the motor in it see that doesn't mean the motors ruined but you may have to pull the head off and tap it gently with a rubber mallet drive the cylinder back down a little bit nothing hard and you may be able to freely Internet but you still have the impeller problem for cooling the engine

Ron Lamp we took the motor off a week ago and found where the top piston had started to gouge the cylinder walls, but the water pump was very bad and we never replaced it, dumb for us. It just got hot too many times and just destroyed the engine. We found a xr4 150 in the same year to replace it.

@@corbinjones764 I have a 1993 275, I had the same problem. It is not obvious how to get it off. You have to push in the base of the front cover and gently slide it to port. That should release the bottom then the face plate (front cover) will slide down and out. Then you can see the latches for the side covers. Swing them out, then lift them up from the back to remove. I broken mine trying to figure it out, ugh.

My story: engine needs to be serviced and each time the engines computer needs to be reset after the service is performed. If you exceed the service interval, it will go into an emergency mode limiting the rpm. How to reset: take out the MOB safety strap from the ignition and "try to" star the engine 3x times. Had the same issue onna susuki 40hp and a mariner/mercury 90hp.

My stator wobbles like hell when its running. Did your brand new one seem to shake? Not the advancer, but the coil packs? Are they supposed to be solid? It seems like the magnetics make it shake...

Every so many hours replace fuel diaphragm . I like to run carbs dry if it is going to sit for long periods . Every so many hours carbs should be cleaned and worn parts replaced . Removing plug wires with channel locks is not smart . Unless you like risking getting hit with high voltage . Better way to check for spark . Invest in a DVA meter or a Yamaha ignition tester or find someone who has one .

I had the stator replaced at a shop (and I think that's it... It's bn a while) but the shop charged me like 700 bucks and when I got it back I gave it full throttle and the thing took off like never before and threw me back so quick I cracked the steering wheel in 2. It runs like a bad ass now. Good luck

@eric myers what year and hp is your engine.. alot of times fuel issues can cause electrical type of symptoms. bad thing of taking it into a marine shop is they start replacing parts until it's fixed.. always best to eliminate all of your problems before you toss in the towel please give me a run down on your problem

I forget the name but it is a plate that is flush to the engine on the port side of it. Replace it and she will fly again

The water pump seems to working fine and is coming out continusly. Before i had it serviced the motor was working fine and it had been not working from november last year on idle it seems to work ok but once i put on gear the same as the vid happens to me but the motor doesnt die out just slows

Make sure it's getting oil. I premix my 135 black max. Try replacing the plug boots, maybe that will fix it.
