An engine with 1.2 million miles, and a clutch that went 900K miles equals a damn good driver. My dad drove for 39 years, the day he retired, he received an award for 3 million miles accident free. You did the right thing keeping it my first truck was a 1975 freightliner cabover 2 axle 350 cummins 13 speed I traded it on a Pete in 1978 it had 450k miles I tried to find it to restore, found out it had been wrecked unfixable sad, so I've tried to find my old Pete cabover KT600 cummins to restore I can't find it I'm retired I thought it would be nice best years I ever hauled but can't find it so keep your old truck you won't regret it

Dan I agree, keep the old gal. And when the newer truck. Shows its going to be a good one. Then would be the time to sell if YOU did sell it. Good luck and may the 386 be half the truck the old 379 has been. Not many owners gets that good of service out of a truck. But you can see its been taken care of. Not many engines are that clean after a million miles.

Dan the Man, I also own a 379. It is a 2001 I bought brand new from Dallas Peterbilt. 1.77 million miles to date. I've rebuilt almost everything at least once except the rear diff. Only the 3rd truck I 've owned since '81. With Mercer 24 years now, # 3330. Say hello if ya see me! Congratulations on the new unit. Enjoy your vids, they are excellent. I'LL be watching for you, hope to cross paths someday. BTW am fellow AZ resident born and raised. Same wife 40 yrs so I got what you meant talking to Terissa and being sentimental. My son is in the VIP office too BTW.

Dont surprise me Dan, i know how tight some of the places are ,i started out with Bekins Van Lines out of Deer Park Washington and spent the first two years of my driving years moving almost nothing but Military families.Some of those neighborhoods was designed for horse and buggy, especially in the northeast .Good luck with your new truck Dan,hope your new one gives you the service the 2003 has...........God Bless Dan.

Good decision on keeping the old Pete, now it is still available to be rejuvenated. Lots of little things to replace (belts, hoses etc.) but the core seems to still be solid. There is still the specter of 1.2m miles of wear and tear but the newer Pete will make a good backup if needed. Wish you many more miles use from the old girl.

good to hear the history on your truck just goes to show if you take pride in what you do you take care of you equipment. don't know many drivers can say they have gotten the mileage out of they. trucks with those few repairs. that's the diverence between a real truck driver and a steering wheel holder hope you have a great week can't wait for the next video

Even though it's an old truck I've gotten to drive as a "starting truck", it's kind of a novelty here today due to it having a nose. A Scania 124G-T :> 12-speed manual gearbox. I didn't learn to drive a manual truck at all in school. So I only got some instructions from my dad and the rest have just been learning on the go.

I really really think you should take this 379 Peterbilt and have it completely overhauled as in new rear end rebuild and cab gone threw an engine rebuild / new platinum white paint job some new Peterbilt Mudd flaps. New tires add a new generator. I just think it belongs to you !!! You will not regret it !!!

Great video Dan, with the mileage and so few repairs it's easy to what a great driver you are and you know the old girl so well. In the AZ climate, I'd say keep her .....at least until the new truck has proven itself. Could listen to stories like this all day!!

Thanks for the walk-around; thanks for sharing lots of good memories. Still can't figure out why you need a generator. My limited experience was with a B-Train flatdeck hauling lumber, squashed cars and steel coils plus a little bit of reefer and dry van work plus a 25 ft. gravel trailer on the frozen McKenzie River Ice Road in the Arctic. Never needed a generator or observed anyone using one so it's a mystery. Gord, Vancouver

Don't be surprised when you mash down on the accelerator that you get a slow response on that paccar motor. I drove for a aggregate rock hauling company and we had old petes with the Cats and newer with the Paccar. the cat responded well when mashed down but the Paccar took for ever to respond.. we would be at a light side by side and ran thru the gears many times to see how they performed and the cat would out do the paccar until about 55 mph then the paccar would pull ahead of the cat but from 0-55 the cat was in the lead. and we had slight hills to go over and the paccar would blow by the cat like I said after about 55 mph. we haul 80 and sometimes 82,000 lbs

I can relate to this history tour, I am not a truck driver, but I do have three 1950's era cars that me and my dad owned since the 50's and 60's that have great family histories as well. I assume you will transfer the U S Army tag next to your license plate to your new truck, I know I would like to know more about your personal Army history if you want to share it.

Wow thanks for the great vid man I 1,000,000.00 with no major problems shows goes to show people how long and well some of these trucks will go and last if they are maintained and serviced properly I have been in the dump truck industry for nearly 15yrs and have always ran kw and my favorite trucks always been kw and peterbilts bc in Alabama a tri-axle can haul up to 82,500lbs which is a lot of weight on a truck especially in some of the positions we would put trucks in do a lot of paving road construction mostly and those 2 brands of trucks have always out lasted and preformed better than the rest of the trucks on the market if they were took care of correctly

You should put a Dorsey trailer on that beauty. Say, an Aluminum Giant. Bet that would look sweet. California won't let you near their border with that engine :) Good excuse to never drive in LA. So if you keep the new Peterbilt, If this one has catastophic failure, Teresa can drive the new one out to you. Much better than having to rent a new one.

I'm guessing that you have gone to a newer truck for better fuel economy and probably something that will pass all the new emission testing espicaly on West cost I think u will definitely regret getting rid the 379 unless just forced to let it go I think you should run the new truck till it's nearly paid off then hire a driver and put in New truck and go back in the 379 and start upgrading to pass emissions but keep up the good work and vids bro they are both very nice trucks and in my opinion kw and petes are simply the best on the market and will stand the test of time it took care of and a wanna be super trucker doesn't get a hold of them and rag them out and western star and freight liners come in next

Which truck is 270" wheelbase? The new one or the old one? Do you plan on coming to Cali now that you're carb compliant? Cut a V notch in the top of your mud flaps right where they screw on. Tighten them up JUST enough so they will stay on but will pull off without breaking the hangers.

I think you are doing the right thing keeping it for a while. It doesn't have any payments to make, and if the new one you bought has a catastrophic failure where you will be down very much time, you can always press the 379 back in service.. I would, though, put a battery tender on it to keep the batteries up. I'd like to buy it, but already have an '07, so, I should not get too many toys around here. What is your ball park price for her?

Hope the next truck treats you as well as that old girl has. Fuel mileage not so great..but longevity is second to none. I know you probably won't, but any other driver in it..and down she will go! A sensible operator is probably 95% or more why you got the service you experienced . I watch a lot of these so called "drivers". Just wondering what oil change intervals (miles) and brand? Lube intervals ? If you don't mind. Only new trk i ever purchased was a 1981 International in 1982. Put 1.6 k on it. Still had orginal back rear in when I sold it. No have a 2001 379..basically same as yours. 6nz. Oh the 1981 was a Co 9670.
